Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:25 pm

Bad idea, you're spoiling your pleasure. Just play. I once recuperated a quest object before being asked to find it and I had no problem giving it to the person; the quest didn't bug.

I've never broken a quest by exploring. They usually start the quest once you find something related to it. But I guess it's better safe then sorry. Though it seems like a hassle.

I'm not sure, I did quite alot of spelunking early on... and never ran into any issues.

A few of the dungeons were "You need a key to enter here", I just assumed they were quest related and I didn't have the right stuff to go in.

It should be alright, provided you keep plenty of alternate save strings ready.

I'm not sure about that either, but if its true... I'm gonna be failing like 100 quests on each character.

I explore all over the map and go wherever I want and don't worry about it. The weirdest thing I've encountered is that the cave, tower, whatever repopulates itself even if you've cleared it and you might have cleared it very recently. So I've killed, say, the "head vampire" or whatever and you'd think there would only be one and then he'd be back the next day after I picked up the quest and all the exact items in the location were in exactly the same places. So it's a little spooky in that way...or a fun repeat. Whichever way you look at it.

I've only gotten stuck with one quest item this way:

Spoiler
I got stuck with a named drum for someone at the Bard's college. I hadn't picked up the quest yet, and then I got a dialogue option with her in Solitude and she gave me my reward for returning the drum to her but it was stuck in my inventory. Yesterday I found a named Lute and I left it in the location where I found it. I didn't want it stuck in my inventory as well.

According to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Finn%27s_Lute, that quest is bugged and you can get stuck with the items permanently regardless of whether you had the quest when you picked them up or not.

The only way you can break quests by exploring is by using console commands to unlock a dungeon that requires a key.

In my experience, the bugs have not affected me getting quests just because I explore an area. You need to explore to get the full satisfaction from Skyrim. I have stumbled into dungeons to find them filled with interesting things, including several ones that have their own unmarked quests. One example (and a good one that tells a story as you progress is in Ansilvund I think. near the mountains in Eastmarch
