Worth the price?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 6:01 am

I'm looking around for another game to start playing and I came across RAGE. After reading all the mixed reviews, I'm a little leary about spending the money on it just to hate it. What do you think?

P.S. - This thread isn't meant to start an arguement, just see what you think.

I definately think it was worth it.
I recommend doing some reasearch to see if it is right for you though.
There are a lot of people who are expecting a fully open world, and a whole lot of RPG elements.
This game isn't really about either of those. Ther are stunning vistas and beautiful level design with some places to explore, but it is definately not a fully open game.
Constructable items, ammo and armor upgrades along with miniagames are the RPG elements.
This is definately not Fallout or Borderlands.
A lot of the bad reviews I have seen seem to come from an uninformed or misconstrued perception of what the game is supposed to be.
If yiou buy this game, I would say it is best to play it with an open mind.
If you are a fan of DM in FPS games, this game might not be fore you. Multiplayer focuses on co-op missions and rally racing.

If you are a PC, check out the PC issues section of the forum, so you can get an idea of some of the issues some PC users are experienceing.

I amyself am loving this game and have spent a good deal of time playing.
Hope you find some games to play that you enjoy.

the game is not worthy of $60. $49.99 is right price for most PC games. plus, the game has so many problems. if you account it, the price will be around $30 something or below.

I got alot out of the game and feel it was worth $60.

The good:

*graphics - I've never seen a game look this good on my PS3 and its multiplatform to boot. I swear it looks as good as any high end pc.
*Gameplay & controls - second to none, expect nothing less from id. Everything feels tight and the gunplay is the best I've experienced in an FPS. I'd say it feels like GoW minus the cover system.
*Setting - They nailed the post apocolyptic world.

The bad:

*Game is Linear and instanced
*No team death match (I actually don't care about this one because I have BF3 to get my TDM fix. I think TDM in games like these are a waste of resources when certain IPs are built around online play)
*Story - Some say its on the short side, I however enjoyed it and want more!

As someone else pointed out keep in mind this isn't like borderlands or Fallout 3. Its like a traditional FPS with some extra stuff added like being able to craft ammunition and various items/tools.

Sheeesh . . . if it's worth 49.99 it's worth 60 (xbox pricing anyway) . . you gonna shoot it down over ten bucks?

It's definitely got $60 worth of entertainment in it. These big multi-platform games cost as much and usually more than major motion pictures these days, and involve more people in-the-making of them too. Anyway, if you like the games post apocalyptic setting . . . and you like FPS, with a few RPG elements... and then with racing thrown in. . . for a SP campaign that'll take you between 15 -25 hours . . . complete with some interesting and fun MP modes (online racing and additionally 9 spec-op type co-op FPS missions . . . then you'll like it and not be sorry you spent $60.

You US guys can't complain about prices. In New Zealand/Australia we have to fork out the equivalent of about US $80-100 for new games. It's cheaper to get the goddamned things shipped over from the other side of the planet.

Definitely. I paid €35-ish (in Real Money) for it and so far have gotten maybe 60 hours gameplay out of it across 2 and a bit playthroughs. If you get the PC version make sure that you've got NVIDIA graphics or otherwise it's fair to forewarn you that you'll need to do a bit of work yourself in order to get it working.

Yes, it's a traditional FPS with added gubbins, but make sure that you've got your own interpretation of what exactly a "traditional FPS" is down solid first. You won't find much gameplay like other modern FPSs here; there is quite a bit of Cover System play for sure but you'll also need to run 'n' gun a lot (especially against Mutants, occasionally against Wasteds and Ghosts, frequently against Jackals and always when driving in the Wasteland). Make sure that kind of play style is to your taste first. Racing adds some variety (and speaking as someone who was initially put off by the idea of racing, and intended to avoid as much of it as possible, on my current playthrough I'm doing every single race and loving it) and the construction and inventory system is nicely lightweight; it brings in some extremely moderate tactical elements but never gets in your way.

The individual missions are linear, but the order you take them in is very much under your own control. The weapons are gloriously unbalanced in good old traditional id style. The plot exists to carry the gameplay along; don't come to it expecting anything deep. Remember that Carmack is the man who once said "Story in a game is like a story in a porm movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important".

The graphics are revolutionary but the end result is quite different from what you might be used to. Tradeoffs and compromises were involved, and some people have expressed huge distaste at that fact. You need to be prepared to accept or ignore those tradeoffs and compromises. You won't see colossal amounts of detail up-close, you won't see bumpmaps like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valles_Marineris, and you won't see dynamic shadows. If they're your idea of "good graphics" then you may be dissappointed. What you will see is a completely uniquely and non-repeating textured world (and it may even take a while for you to fully appreciate what it is you're looking at).

So long as that suits your tastes you'll get an insanely enjoyable old-school FPS with some modern bits hanging off it and some extra stuff added on to make it slightly more interesting (but not to the extent that they distract you from it).

Played the campaign 5x, now I'm trying to get all the multiplayer emblems. I got the 360 version. My first concole shooter, and I've played it nearly everyday for a month now. Definitely worth the money if you don't just rush through it. I mean, you can finish Quake 1 in 12 minutes, but I've spent 100s of hours playing it. You can finish Rage in 7 hours and say that was a lot of money per hour. But it's a lot of fun replaying the levels, trying out different weapons, ammo tpyes, RC bomb cars, wing sticks, sentry bots. For me every playthrough felt different. The online racing feels like good old Quake 3: quick and brutal. Coop is a real challenge, very tough. Rage failed the expecations you might have towards a modern shooter (the lame battlefield 3 campaign got better rating than Rage in some magazines). But it's a gem for people who grew up with doom and quake.

So if you're looking for a 1 time shooter experience, rent it for a weekend, enjoy it and think: these were well spent 5 bucks. If you're looking for a game where you want to improve your skills and try out different tactics, do a speedrun, fist run, 100% run etc, go get it! Definetly worth the money!

This game is really cool. Not for old id fans, its different. I am very happy that i don't have to make quests like kill 10-15-20 or sg mobs and come back. This game is linear but its clear and simple, as a good novel.

I voted no on personal reasons for the game.

This would depend on how skilled you see yourself as a gamer. Also depends on what platform you are deciding to play the game on.

In general from what I have seen with a few friends then if you are the standard Battlefield/Counterstrike/Call of Duty player than this game may suit you. This is a more rough and tough version of them games and they've enjoyed the more battle heavy environments.

As a console gamer this game would appear, according to a friend playing it on an XBOX360, quite a challenge and very good.

If you are more of a hardcoe fan of FPS games in the sense of Quake3/Quake Live (same game) or UT3 and that style of game then you may find depth of this game lacking. If you are more hardcoe than that such as Quake or UT, as in the games from 1995-2000, then this game really does lack fight. On hard, which is my default choice for these games, I literally started to enjoy the fight with the Authority when I completed the game. This is the same problem I had with Half-Life in the skill ramps up and ends really quickly. I have since completed the game with just using 1 gun in the game on hard mode. In Nightmare I am finding more of a challenge with sticking to the one gun principal but nightmare should have been what hard is. Hard should be normal. Normal should be the easy.

I feel the skill levels and AI are heavily influenced for a less skilled console gamer that also takes much longer to aim due to the nature of a control pad versus that of a mouse and keyboard.

The main reason I think the game is not worth it however is based on a PC gamer with high skill of hardcoe FPS/DM background.
1: Game not involved enough.
2: Game is too easy.
3: Graphically the game is lacking on the PC compared to other games and detracts from the gameplay.
4: Vehicles feel like an after thought of getting between points A and B and the battles you have are an effort to make it feel less that way but just way too easy to win.

Before anyone feels like jumping in on me for point 3 here is a clarification of my view.
The game is beautiful in environments where you can see the high detail images. There is a spot in Wellspring I used to emphasise this point to a friend.
There is a wall cracked and crumbled with a piece of metal round it also decayed and rusting and the detail of each of those pieces is amazing. The small touches to each element to make it feel believable and realistic are quite something.
Less than 100 pixels away is some foliage. This looks like a slightly higher resolution graphic from Doom. It's a 2D element of low resolution detail floating in the air that looks odd against the road/path and background of the walls and high resolution details.
Less than 100 pixels further away is some environment extras. Boxes, barrels, litter and various other bits strewn across the environment that again have been downscaled to be blurry, lack of detail and at odds to other parts of the environment. This stand out and disappoint on the aesthetic feel of the game. The game and engine is certainly capable of more but for whatever reason on the PC no effort was given to fixing these bits.
People have tried to justify this in various ways.
The PC is not a console and therefore does not have their limitations. Be it that the XBOX360 has a DVD versus the PS3 having a Blu-Ray fine if you are a console but what relevance does that have to my PC?
I neither have a small hard drive and neither do I to worry about the game running slow due to the spec of my 2008 system.
I hint back to the CD versus DVD debate where even Epic shipped Unreal Tournament 2004 on 6 (or was it 7) CDs for those who needed it. I would pay more money for an extra 2-3 or 5 dvds with content on to install. This game uses Steam as a medium so I would also not be bothered by leaving it to download extra content too.

As it stands I feel rather let down by the way it feels more and more like a console port to the PC and that no effort was put in to make it at least feel like they wanted it to feel like a PC game.

Why do I need to press Enter at every time I load the game or after exit my in game playing to get in to a menu? Just completely dumb waste of my time.

I seriously doubt it depends on what game you play, but solely on how skilled you are... I play cod and battlefield and found this very easy.. im a pc gamer though.. dunno how hard it would be with controller compared to other games

Typical Pc gamers thinking they are the most hardcoe :brokencomputer:

It takes ten times the skill to headshot with a controll pad than on a mouse, and those games you mentiond being hardcoe? lol don't think so. Anyone who is a self proclaimed hardcoe gamer needs to wake up and smell the roses, we are just gamers.

Here are some facts that most people will agree with:

1. controll schemes are better on consoles.
2 aiming and getting in good shots takes more skill with a controll pad.
3. Games look and play better on the consoles and have less bugs. And for the record i was a pc gamer for many years back in the days before making the move to the xbox 360.

This is just my opinion though im sure there are those that agree as well as those that do not, your entitled to your opinion as i am mine, also im not trying to start a pc vs console or console vs console war as in the end its just down to personal prefrence but i do honestly beleive the pc is not in the same leage as console gaming and pc gaming as a whole is dying out, according the EB games and game trader that is a fact, they simply cant sell pc games anymore and so they only have 2 small shelvs for pc games.

Just my 2 c
