Would Bethesda hire me

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 6:04 pm

Hypothetical question. I think I may have put it in wrong section but would Bethesda hire me to help with their projects noting the following:

3 years work with creating video games.
Designed my own RPG video game with a main plot lasting around 12 hours.
Basic knowledge of RPG design
Advanced knowledge of elder scrolls lore
Unemployed lots of free time on hands
Willing to work with scripts voices character design
Creature design any design
Willing to work for $10,000 a year and each video game I help them with.

They should.. Every once and awhile I think you can apply.. I don't know if their pay is good or not.. Seems like they get a lot of hours and don't get payed much.. Not sure about that.. Just seems as if the Devs are always tired..

Bethesda themselves almost definitely won't see this here. Their official jobs page is http://jobs.zenimax.com/.

Another way to get noticed is to make a super awesome mod, like top 5 on the nexus awesome. Easier said than done. I believe the guy who made Midas Magic got offered a job.

Um thanks. :) I have to be a moderator first. And yes I'd work for less than minimum wage. Ok I'll make that mod. :)

This is a pretty redundant point.

It's all about the portfolio you have to show the company. Also knowing people helps tremendously.

Given that you didn't think to check the jobs page/just ask Beth and that you say you're willing to work for such a small wage (presumably full time), I know that I, at least, would be somewhat dubious.

But if you have a good resume and a good portfolio, send 'em in and see how you go .

For only $10,000 a year (£6225.87)
I would hire you :P

If you had more experience working for another games company or some company that you did programming/design work for it may boost your chances further, so would bethesda actually looking for new employees.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting

Why value yourself so low?

If I were an employer, I would wonder briefly why, assume you had no decent skills. And then reject you for someone who asked a decent amount.

Try reading through the Inside the Vault interview series at Bethesda's Blog. Here's an excerpt from http://www.bethblog.com/index.php/2007/08/23/inside-the-vault-megan-sawyer/:

How did you get into the industry? Do you have any tips for breaking in?

I got in through a combination of very hard work, and complete dumb luck. I majored in 3D/Time based art at Carnegie Mellon and had an excellent education. In August 2001 I moved to NYC, intending on working for MTV and living my fabulous city life. Then a month later everything changed. I toughed it out for two years, until finally moving back to Maryland and wound up working retail for a bit. One day I got a random email from a gamesas employee who liked my website and invited me to apply. Since there weren’t any art openings at the time, I applied to QA and got my first industry job. From there I worked 18 hour days – 8 hours on QA, followed by 4 hours at my retail job, and then 6 hours on my portfolio until I was awesome enough to be accepted into the art team.

Here are some things I think are handy in terms of “breaking in”:

Swallow your pride. One thing I’ve seen get in the way of a lot of industry hopefuls is a misplaced sense of entitlement/huge ego.
It’s 2% luck, 98% hard work. Make sure when you do get a lucky break, that you’re prepared for it. Have your portfolio constantly updated and ready to show potential employers.

I wonder if Bethesda ever thinks of opening a private school to teach modern day game development?
There is a demand and I'm sure it'll be well attended.

Working there? The wages are probably union scale and each department has it's own union. Like in Hollywood.

I wonder if Beth. has guilds to join if you work there?
The artists guild - the writers guild - programmers guild - etc.
You could join the magic circle (legal dept) or fighters guild ( security ).

Never let the dream die! - Keep on truckin'!

Pretty sure what he's trying to say is that he'd be willing to work for whatever since the prospect of working for them on any project is amazing.

Which is foolish. There are several scenarios that could develop from him being hired for pennies. For example, he'd quickly learn that his coworkers are making eight times what he is and become disgruntled. A rival company could pay him his salary to do something not in the interest of Bethesda. He could become condescending toward the rest of the team, claiming he's working for eight times less and tugging his weight. The first and the latter are ones I could easily see developing in anybody, the latter more toward our OP. He came on here with a short, vague list of accomplishments and believes he's worthy of working for a very selective game company.

I doubt it you would have a much better chance getting hired as a bottle cleaner or a milkman.
