Would This Be a Better Approach to the Patch?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:06 am

Hello,

I have a new idea regarding the release of the patch for the Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3. Instead of releasing all of the bug/glitch fixes at once, why not break it up a few, smaller releases? We could receive the fixes Bethesda has finished, and give us the remaining when they are finished? If we do it this way, it would enable a large portion of us to continue playing the game; while the remaining gamers will be able to play soon after.

What do you think?

The main potential problem I can see is that they may be taking as long as they are due to trying to chase down new bugs/glitches caused by the patching process, which if as I suspect is the case then releasing partial/semi fix/patches may not work as intended.

Another problem is the certification process. Microsoft and Sony have to check and pass or rejest the patch, so its still gonna slow down there.

yeh that is what I was gonna say, with the big patch it only needs to get certified once, with the smaller ones it has to be certified a lot

Good insight guys. I have sort of a different (but essentially the exact same idea) take on it. Why not release what they have currently, then release everything else in the next 1 - 4 weeks?

Also, does anybody know if the patch is still in development? Or is it pending certification from Microsoft and/or Sony?

I poked J.E. Sawyer about the patch the other day and he said to ask Bethesda when it was coming out, not Obsidian. Since we know Obsidian was working on the patch, I figure that means that either the patch is done and awaiting quality assurance/certification, or that Obsidian only handled balance and quest bugs whereas Bethesda is patching the engine bugs.

I agree here, so I voted no. But what I find funnier is that this game is now down to £20 BRAND NEW on Amazon. I'd highly suspect this is due to the gamebreakers, but could also be because of the Christmas season. I've been patient since EU release, and havn't had a sniff of how the game plays. I'll stay that way.

Providing this is released BEFORE the DLC release, and does not coincide with it.

I put yes but it wont happen as im led to believe that developers can only release two main patches before they start having to pay for the next patch to be released. Im told it is a way to stop developers releasing games that are unfinished bug wise. Clearly didnt work here lol

Gamestation has also announced that PS3 and XBox versions are now £19.99 and PC £14.99 BRAND NEW.
The next gen versions are listed as £30 OFF!!!

Also some posters are claiming that Gamestop are refusing to take P/X on F:NV because they have had so many copies returned. Some are claiming that they can't sell the new copies they have due to the bad publicity surrounding this mess.

I voted 'No' BTW.

I agree lots of smaller updates would be better. But unfortunately it wont happen on console because both MS and Sony charge publishers to put title updates on Live and PSN

Good input. I had no idea that there were rules/regulations regarding the release of patches and updates. I agree now with most of the posters that support the idea of just one, large release.

But I came up with another idea for the developers:

How about keeping us updated on the progress of the patch? Why not give twitter updates on what they are working on, and what they have finished? The developers will never have to give a release date, but it would make us a little more comfortable waiting, because we know for sure that they are making progress. What does everyone else think? (I would love to hear the admin's input regarding this topic & message.)

Keep in mind if we did separate smaller, updates, we'd still need to go through testing and certification -- that would likely prolong the overall process of getting fixes in.

I'm hopeful to have more info on the update/patch soon.

Testing? What are you talking about? We do your testing for your games. Thats why we have this issue now isn't it?

Big or small, it is unlikely that the patches for all three platforms will all emerge from their individual certification/testing process at the same time, so why not release them as they are ready by platform? In this instance it doesn't affect multiplayer or new content (since there isn't any of either) so why punish everyone by making them wait for the lowest common denominator in order to have a pointless simultaneous release?

This approach would reward the platform partner who is efficient and has their stuff together, while motivating any partner who would otherwise drag things out.

Thanks for the response Gstaff, but as you can tell this thread, I've posted quite a few questions and I'm going to continue that pattern (lol)

Does Bethesda and/or Obsidian plan to release the patch prior to the "Fallout: New Vegas" DLC release? Or do you plan to release it with the DLC at release? (I'm assuming by then it will be ready)

I'd like to add this. I have not been able to continue playing the game for the last 3-4 weeks. That's because I like to finish all the side quests in a game, before I progress through the main storyline. I cannot continue because the game thinks that ED-E is in my active party, but he is not physically presence. This bug/glitch prevents me from doing certain quests. (i.e. the one with "Rex")

Personally, I'd rather they wait and do "large" patches instead of incremental "as we go" fixes.

Sure, it sounds like a great idea - if that "this is what we've got so far" patch happens to fix the problem you're experiencing. But I'd imagine it'd only be more frustrating if it were to fix a bunch of other people's problems, while the fix you actually care about ended up getting pushed back to the next incremental update.

Well,
I'm kind of pissed off because I preorderded this game for £40 and after a couple of days of playing it I got the dlc error and I haven't played the game for months which is really annoying so I think that all the people that have got this dlc problem should get the dlc for free because you can get this game for like £20 now so people that got the error could of saved £20 so yeah I mean 800 msp is nothing like the amount of £20-£40...
It is also a shame because I had just completed the quest "House Always Wins" and saved the game straight after talking to House in the Lucky 38 and the next day I was really excited to see what I had to do next and I got this [censored] load of bull crap. :brokencomputer:

As much as a part of me totally agrees with: "They should compensate us for losing our games!", never going to happen. I am upset about the game pulling this whole: "DLC not available" crap. I'm a bit MORE upset that the PC seems to have already received a number of patches for bug fixes, while the consoles have gotten one (that I know of). I understand that Sony and MS are a bit dikeish in their "we need to certify your stuff" approach. I just don't understand why it seems to take so much longer for consoles to get a patch compared to the PC. The only way I could see somebody actually using the "MS is taking forever to certify" would be if you are DONE with the patch and are just waiting for it to go live, so that becomes a moot point unless you are, as previously mentioned, done with the patch.

When I play a game, I expect to at least be able to FINISH the game. Glitches/bugs are expected, even after extensive QA, but a bug that causes your saves to become un-useable... that's going a bit too far. I've been a fan of Fallout since it was being produced by Black Isle, and I like what Bethesda/Obsidian are doing with the series (content wise), it's a nice update to the series while trying to keep the old feel full of obscure references, wacky NPC's, strange humor, etc...

Just do us a favor and take a bit more time (when producing...not on patches) when it comes to putting out a good game like this.

I definitely agree with "iiNinjav" & "Kazhrei". I am having a hard time believing that Bethesda/Obsidian would determine "Fallout: New Vegas" ready for the consumer, considering the game is in a less than stellar state.

Also from what I remember when I asked a BioWare employee about a patch they said that the 360's updates get more and more expensive for them and even after it is done it could be weeks before MS finally lets it pass.

That's why they try to get as much into 1 update as they can since the next update would cost more
