Would you live for ever?

If you were ever given the chance to live for ever, would you?

I personally would, IF I could spend it with one of my closest friends or girlfriend/wife

Notes:
You are not invincible
You don't age

if you are not invincible, how can you live forever?

Living forever svcks:

1. everyone you know dies

2. if anyone finds out, they will hunt you down

3. If there is an earthquake, you may get stuck underground for all eternity

4. If a ship sinks/plane crashes in the ocean, same concept is possible of you being pinned somewhere forever

5. You'll never evolve, even as the rest of the world does

6. You'll go mad slowly from the time passing and memories

7. Eventually the sun will kill off all life on the planet

If you're not invincible then you could die. Ergo, there'd be plenty of chances to off yourself.

Sounds like it'd be somewhat neat. But I'm somewhat indifferent; only advantage would be you'd get to do everything you'd otherwise never have the chance to do. But if you go it alone, then it's not worth it. Everyone you ever loved or cared about you'd see die. That would svck.

Like Defron said, there are plenty of ill side effects to eternal life. But let's say there wern't any then of course I would live forever. This world might be small, but there's still so much to see.

I would definitely do it, since I have no intention of living a lifestyle that will get me to my 60's anyways. What I mean by this if it was possible for my body to remain in a 20's or 10's state of being, that would be perfect. I would be in good condition to take any risk, and chances are if I have lived for a very long time, the fear of death will be nonexistent.

Now if say I was invincible, then maybe no...

Sorry if im not being clear. I can't stop thinking about all these video games I can now play on PC!

A happy compromise would be living for five hundred years, but being able to share your hyper longevity. Find a girl you fall in love with? Great, now you can get the chance to split your years between you and her.

250 each. No aging until right at the very end.

That seems like it'd be nice.

I used to watch every episode of Highlander.
I loved it. And, I've thought about this before.

Yes. I think it would be awesome to live forever, yet be vulnerable to physical harm.
Making money would be an issue...
You would need to constantly obtain new Social Security numbers, changing identity every 20-30 years.
But that would be the challenge.

Also, if there were others like you, that were always searching for other "immortals" to kill them, that would add some spice to life...
"There can be only one!"

In other news I finally got an avatar

Looks cool... Sort of TOOL-ish.

Yeah I certainly wouldn't want to live for ever if I was invincible, too many risks associated with it

And what's toolish about my avatar?

If you were ever given the chance to become immortal, would you?

I personally would, IF I could spend it with one of my closest friends or girlfriend/wife

Notes:
You are not invulnerable (ie. you can come to physical harm and death by physical means)
You don't age

Fixed?

I would, you may as well, you've got nothing to lose really. You can suicide if losses become to hard and anyway, you'll die if you don't.

I think the risk of dieing would be what would keep living forever interesting. Real life god mode would svck...

And here is the album art from http://noisezone.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/tool.jpg I'm referring to...

My nephew has that eye tattooed on one of his ankles. I also like the band, but not enough to tattoo any of their album art onto my body... :nope:

Sure, but I'd need to be invulnerable. I'm willing to accept all the negative consequences if nothing can harm me. Being immortal but still being able to be killed like a normal person sounds like the sort of thing that would be the result of a deal with the devil.

If I was invulnerable though, I'd immediately go to NASA and volunteer for a mission to Mars and eventually everywhere else in our Solar System. Why not, right? I wouldn't even need oxygen.

I'd definitely take it if I could top myself. If it would make me truly immortal, that'd take a little more consideration. But I suspect I would still go with it.

About the only thing which would hold me back from the latter option is what DEFRON pointed out earlier: the possibility of being stuck somewhere http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AndIMustScream.

As to watching people around me die off... well, that'll happen anyway (assuming I last a decent time), and I'd have decades to work on coping skills before it'd be a significant problem. Long as I kept building new relationships I'd still have a network of friends to support me, too. The way my memory works might help, too (sorry, too tired to bore you with an explanation).

It might svck to be stuck as the current flavour of human while humanity as a whole evolves, but I reckon the time-scale on that would give enough time to get over inferiority issues :P.

So, having covered some of the cons, what are the pros for me? There is so goddam much I want to do, see, experience, learn! One lifetime is nowhere near enough -- not even for just the stuff I could do on Earth :(.

As interesting as it would be to see the world in 200 years or so, I couldn't bear outliving my kids (not that I have children yet).

I would.

We know so little about everything that it would take many lifetimes to research everything that we don't know already.

Yes. I hate people and my only goal in life is to learn as much as I can. Knowledge = Power.

EDIT: just to prove that I'm human and not a robot / serial killer. I would really miss my sister, I love her more than anything in the world, could she live for ever too?

Yes. Death scares me more than any living torment, and eighty years (about fifty of which would be in top health if I'm lucky) is not nearly long enough to do it all.

I would travel the world, not getting tied down and doing as much as inhumanly possible. When I got bored I would probably try to change the world however my wise self would see fit. And if I died along the way? Hey, I was bored anyway.

Yes please.

No cell aging, thus theoretical immortality? Yeah, I could cope with that. Love seeing civilisation develop, no matter what nonsense they are currently doing. Also, input input input input...

Ever noticed how time feels like it's just passing by faster as you grow older? Imagine that times 10. Or times 100.

Yeah, I would, as long as it's still possible for me to die. I'd rather not live forever-forever, I'd just like to not age and kill myself when I get all bored.

What a morbid thought.
