Ok, so I'm one of the numerous people who had the Blood on the Ice quest bug out on them. I did the first part fine, but the second part trying to catch the real killer just glitched all to hell. So, I ended up using console commands to force complete the quest, disable Calixto, get rid of the Strange Amulet and give myself the Necromancer Amulet. And also Jarleif didn't have any options about buying Hjerim, so I had to use the console for that too.

I was just wondering, is it possible to get Wuunferth out of jail and back in his usual place with the console? Everything else is as it should be now, but Wuunferth oughtn't be in jail anymore. Anyone know?

the problem people are having with this quest is simply not having ANY patience at all. the blood on the ice quest continues when u hear a rumor of another murder. this isnt a set event. there is no way to trigger it. u just need to hang around the town and hear it fro ma guard. only then can u complete it.

as for your question, u ruined the entire quest and theres not much i can tell u at this point. releasing wuunferth is part of the questline. by force-completing it, u missed that stage and theres noway to uncomplete the quest and get it right (as far as i know)

The quest bugged out for me in the first place. Because I didn't sell the amulet to Calixto. After talking to Wuunferth in jail, the game automatically bugged out, skipped a couple quest points and told me to go find Calixto even though I never saw him murder anyone. Found him in Hjerim, he attacks, I bring him to 0 health, he doesn't die, stands back up, can't talk to him or interact with him at all, attacks me again...and that was before I even touched the console. Pure game bugginess right there.

If that's not a bug, then I don't know what is.

Fact of the matter is, YOU are, in fact, incorrect. Many people have this quest bugged, and it has nothing to do with being impatient. The nerve of some people...

the nature of this type of error is the order of doing things. the problem with being on a forum and knowing how a quest is supposed to happen before the game does is u skip steps and bug it out.

did u talk to calixto before u got the quest to do so? the game could have thought u did that before your questlog had time to update the fact that ur supposed to do it. this causes the npc to be ahead of your questlog and that messes it up.

i had the same thing happen to me for the black star quest where i talked to nelacar before i was supposed to and when i finally got the quest to talk to him, it didnt update in my questlog that i completed the step.

the issue here is that the questlog only updates WITH the npc. if it sees that the npc hasnt updated his status in the questline, it wont either. with u talking to calixto and updating him early, he cant update when he;s supposed to and the quest goes wrong.

I didn't sell him the amulet or ever see him during the entire chain, just walked in to windhelm one day and saw him murder some chick, killed him, bam i'm a hero.

If you wrongly accuse wuunferth wait three days then talk to him again in jail and he initiates the quest update "patrol the stone quarter", you should then be able to kill cailxto after seeing the cutscene of him attacking the woman.

Not an option.

What happened is this:

I never sold the amulet to Calixto in the first place. There was nothing in-game to indicate to me that the Strange Amulet was important in any way, and I didn't need the extra gold, so I just went straight to the Jarl's steward with the journals and stuff. My character somehow "knew" that Wuunferth was involved, as I clicked the dialogue option "Wuunferth did it" or something. Wuunferth goes to jail. I forget I even have the strange amulet.

A few days later I start the second part of the quest by talking to Wuunferth in jail. I get the objective "Patrol the gray quarter at night." I think, ok, I'll do that.

But, as soon as I step out of the Palace of Kings, I get the "completed" message for the Patrolling objective, and then the objective "catch the killer" or whatever it's called. It was 10 in the morning and I had just stepped out of the palace and of course never saw Calixto do anything. But I followed the quest arrow to Hjerim, went in and found Calixto. He attacked me on sight, I beat him down to 0 HP but he didn't die. But I also couldn't talk to him. Rinse and repeat. Attack, beat to 0 hp, won't die, won't talk.

End of line. Quest unfinishable.

Hence why I used the console.

Yeah some people would say, "well of course it didn't work because you didn't do everything in the right order." That's not the freaking point. I had no reason at the time to even think the Amulet was important. Therefore I did not think to sell it to Calixto. The whole "selling the amulet to Calixto" had no concrete connection in importance to anything else in the quest. IT seemed liked a completely arbitrary thing. And I was actually playing the game how you're supposed to play it, by just...well...playing it. And not constantly reading guides and stuff at the same time (I hate spoilers).

Even if I didn't do things in the right order, that shouldn't be a reason for the game to actually GLITCH.

It seems everyone gets a different bug/story. I got the amulet, but never talked to Calixto about it because his shop was locked 24/7. Had to pick the lock to Hjerim because Tova killed herslef so I couldn't get the key. Lock wuunferth away, butcher kills some other chick. Go patrol stone quarter at night, calixto chillin with his dagger out. Arrow'd to the face. Still stuck with a strange amulet.

Apparently, picking the lock to calixto's shop makes him hostile and invincible. So dont do that.

It might be helpful to tell us what console commands you entered to actually complete the quest. I'm guessing a stage or two were skipped because there's actually something like 5 quest ids for various parts of this quest so it would be easy to set something out of order.

Try this:

But only if the first one doesn't work. Then, go to the court mage's room and type:
