Xbox 360 Firmware Update : Othor Games

Anyone hear about the firmware update being released tomorrow that apparently makes the disk drive useless in (some) older models?
You can read about it http://www.pcworld.com/article/228174/new_xbox_firmware_bricks_some_consoles_microsoft_makes_amends.html. Get this though they're actually replacing the affected units for FREE!! With a brand spanking new xbox 360s model with a 250GB HDD.
Personally I'm actually hoping it messes up my old one (never thought I'd say that lol) even though I have another new 360s already.

Microsoft says it's a very rare case and if you're console is affected they'll know through LIVE and they'll contact you.

Super rare, as any console affected has likely RRODed by now.

Just letting people know updating your (older model) console could mean a free upgrade. I still have an old console kickin around that's just gathering dust so I have my fingers crossed that I can get a new one to sell for PC parts lol

Super rare, as any console affected has likely RRODed by now.

I have Xbox from the first year of release that still runs

Though I replaced it with an Elite a year back. I should hook it back up to see if it affected *crosses fingers*

I'll have to update my 360, but only new games are affected right? I don't use my 360, so when I update I won't be able to put in a current game to see if it reads the disc or not.

exactly how old of a model are they talking about? will any elites be effected?

I don't think they specified if it affects new or old games just that it affects retail disks. I guess just try all your games and see if you get read errors :shrug: but they did say they can detect it on LIVE so maybe actually getting the error isn't necessary...I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

I'm guessing it's the older models. For instance, when pro models came with a max of a 20 gb hd. Unless it's random? Who knows.

Nothing I can find goes into any specific age of consoles just "older" ones. On top of getting a free console apparently you get a year of LIVE too.

I'm guessing it may be part of the launch consoles. Guess we'll see tomorrow.

I don't have any games. I also don't have Gold. They should be able to detect it with Silver, right? My console is a launch console from November 2005. I don't even have a HD any more because it bricked on me. I have a USB with all the updates on it.

Yeah the problem apparently comes from enabling them to read the new disks but it doesn't work on all of them I guess and leaves them unable to read some disks. Only a small amount of people are expected to be affected though.

Yeah haha and M$ could get each one of those people a new S and still have more money than all of us on the forum + 10 years making it, combined!

Anyways, I have the S so I'm not entirely worried about this..I'm just happy to know M$ is actually dishing out like this. Granted, they know about this now in the beta..so does that mean they plan on not being able to fix it or is it that they just can't fix it? Maybe it's a system flaw in and of itself which is why they are giving out the new systems. But I'm guessing it's only certain models..hopefully not random.

so it could be my old xbox that has the disc read error problem? so IF i hook it up, recover gamertag and LIVE detects the problem... I COULD get a new xbox?

Time to hook that old pos up!
