Xbox Kinect, I didn't want it at first either.

I've never, ever been into the push for games that have you up and moving around and I have to say that I'm very glad that Todd Howard and the Bethesda team seems to feel the same way. I think the whole thing is a gimmick and isn't something that is going to revolutionize the gaming industry like many people thought, and may still be thinking.

When I watched the E3 coverage of Nintendo's Wii U, I couldn't help say to myself, "this is terrible, who wants this crap?" As a parent, I can kind of understand the enjoyment that a young child might get out of it, and if that's what they're gearing this stuff toward, then so be it. I'm sure there's a market for it. But for myself, I've always said, "no, thanks," I'll pass. Until now...

Not that I'm going to go out and buy one but what Bethesda has done with it, at least in my opinion, is awesome. The voice commands for the Dragon Shouts are pretty sweet, I have to admit. Now, again, I'm probably not going to go out and drop $100 just to yell, "Fus Ro Dah," at my television set but I definitely would like to try it out and it looks like it would be fantastic.

The limited, but great Kinect support got me thinking about other ways it might be used in The Elder Scrolls series. Now we have to be careful not to get carried away with it because I still want to sit on my couch and play this game with a controller in my hand, but the voice commands could definitely be expanded.

I don't know how much memory or disc space it would take up, or whether it would simply be impossible, but who awesome would it be to be able to say the words that our character says in dialogue with NPCs? I think I could really get into that. Since we never actually get to hear our character speak, aside from Dragon Shouts, I think it would add to the immersion, at least for me if I had to actually ask the NPCs on the screen different questions and make different remarks. Of course, Bethesda would want to leave the old-type of dialogue up there in case the Kinect did not recognize your voice command.

Really the options for dialogue are limitless, at least given the possibilities. Now, I understand that some things might not be possible with the technology available, but think about being able to ask NPCs questions, have them give you directs, etc. It could really be a great feature for future Bethesda games.

Just a thought.

I hear horror stories about kinect users and games, sounds like a fun idea that just doesn't workout so well in practice.

Next gen I feel like is going to be a big breakthrough in console gaming. Including something like this. There is already a game that is based on voice command and that is endwar. If TES took it to the next level that would be amazing :)

I hear, ya. But I also remember when people said similar things about anolog controllers. You may be right, and things like this may be gone before long but I could see it going the other way. And I think it would be pretty amazing. If Bethesda could get it to work fluidly it would be a revolution. Think about it, asking NPCs questions, asking where someone is or where something is, etc. I completely understand that this could be a total disaster as well, but some of the things that we see in games now I don't think I would have believed they'd exist 15 years ago when I was playing the Sega Genesis.

IMO a pointless gimmick. Bethesda should go back to text based dialogue.

Dang. That's old school, but to each his own. I prefer the voice actors, and unfortunately for a lot of old schoolers, so does the mass consumers.

I think the whole thing is a gimmick especially if its used for an entire game.
For something like managing menus like in Skyrim it seems like a good idea. But the question is how functional is it in its use.

Skyrim actually uses Kinect integration very well. I love organizing my inventory, changing weapons, and commanding companions, very smooth and practical. Dialogue would take it to another level. I think I'd enjoy it.

It's great for weapon or spells too. No pause in the action

Largely it is yes. I agree about text dialogue, but people want their fluff and they will be satisfied with things as long as its pretty.

The pause in the action does not bother me and it let's me scout what I wish to so next which is great for my mage characters. I prefer more RPG and less action in my RPGs.

See, I think those things, mentioned by Tinz3455 and WeBB15 are fantastic. I might just buy one. I know my 4-year old would love it. And again, I agree with what a lot of you guys are saying, an entire game based on the Kinect, blah. I'd never play it, but my son would. And I'd play it with him. Its funny, kind of off subject, how video games get a negative stigma attached to them and while I'm a grown man with a family I still play them all the time and I actually using gaming to have fun with my son. And yes, I said he was 4, and already gaming. Its pretty funny. I have two Xbox's, one in the den and one in the bedroom. Sometimes we play them together (Lego Batman) and sometimes we are each playing our own game... alright back on topic. :)

Question

I'm sure you guys have seen the iPhone commercials where (one of them has Samuel L. Jackson) people are talking to their phones, giving it commands and it is responding. This may be a dumb question, but are we to that point yet? Is there an app or an update that allows us to do this? If so, that's the beginning of things like this. I'm telling you.

It's a bit immersion breaking for me when I'm a necromancer and have to change to "conjure atronach" to "ice spike" then to "revive zombie" then my wabbajack and restoration spells. It's a bit of a hassle. If they got rid of kinect and went to oblivions hot key system I'd be fine with that too.

Can you actually say, "conjure atronach" and the spell goes into your hands?

Im not sure games will be like that for a long while. Phones are starting to outperform net books, it's amazing really. I had a iPhone 4s but Im getting the samsung galaxy s3 which also has a voice command which you can do nearly anything with

See I like the idea of the favorites because I can put whatever I want there for quick access. Also there is whatever I want in there and its more than a few things it can be several that is why I did ot like Oblivions wheel, not enough options in it. Also I am not sure about getting into the motion control thing because of the horror stories accompanied with it and I feel its largely a gimmick.

Personally, I doubt I'd play Skyrim half as much as I do without the Kinect.

Being able to quickly equip different weapon setups quickly and use all my shouts without switching between them is pretty much straight up game-changing for me. Navigating Skyrim's terribad UI without Kinect is something I really don't care to deal with.

Not to mention, I'd almost never use my racial powers without it. But since I don't need to set shouts to buttons anymore, I just keep my power on it.

Also when your looting your enemies you can set the loot value from highest to lowest so you don have to rummage through the "iron arrows" or the "fur shoes" instead you'll get "enchanted dwarven sword" and "96 gold". It sorts it all out for you

Actually they didn't get it to work fluidly. There is a considerable lag between shout and action. A long enough delay that you will get killed. Still makes using a button the wiser of the two options.

To their credit they probably did the best with that crappy piece of technology.

My biggest complaint is why not make it microphone enabled so EVERY user can use it on every platform. Now that would be cool and innovative.
