When I watched the E3 coverage of Nintendo's Wii U, I couldn't help say to myself, "this is terrible, who wants this crap?" As a parent, I can kind of understand the enjoyment that a young child might get out of it, and if that's what they're gearing this stuff toward, then so be it. I'm sure there's a market for it. But for myself, I've always said, "no, thanks," I'll pass. Until now...
Not that I'm going to go out and buy one but what Bethesda has done with it, at least in my opinion, is awesome. The voice commands for the Dragon Shouts are pretty sweet, I have to admit. Now, again, I'm probably not going to go out and drop $100 just to yell, "Fus Ro Dah," at my television set but I definitely would like to try it out and it looks like it would be fantastic.
The limited, but great Kinect support got me thinking about other ways it might be used in The Elder Scrolls series. Now we have to be careful not to get carried away with it because I still want to sit on my couch and play this game with a controller in my hand, but the voice commands could definitely be expanded.
I don't know how much memory or disc space it would take up, or whether it would simply be impossible, but who awesome would it be to be able to say the words that our character says in dialogue with NPCs? I think I could really get into that. Since we never actually get to hear our character speak, aside from Dragon Shouts, I think it would add to the immersion, at least for me if I had to actually ask the NPCs on the screen different questions and make different remarks. Of course, Bethesda would want to leave the old-type of dialogue up there in case the Kinect did not recognize your voice command.
Really the options for dialogue are limitless, at least given the possibilities. Now, I understand that some things might not be possible with the technology available, but think about being able to ask NPCs questions, have them give you directs, etc. It could really be a great feature for future Bethesda games.
Just a thought.
