how do you guys get the avatars with clear backgrounds and looking smooth and defined? my ones that i upload keep failing in both those areas! even after constant trial and error i cant figure it out! help a friend out, guys?

okay, i know how to do the transparent thing now, and its smooth as you can see, but it isn't smooth when i have it looking at his upper body. help? and how do i make the picture smaller so it fits the sites restraints?
