You call this decorating?

Here... buy all of these upgrades. TADA! You've decorated!

It doesn't seem terribly... personalized. Plus, can someone clean the enchanting lab up? It's full of body parts still! At least in Fallout they let you pick a theme (if I recall correctly). I'd have liked to see something similar in Skyrim.

It would be hard for the program to understand what you want personalised. that would take behaviour recognition software.

I think it just places the basic theme and you have to `personalise` it yourself.

With the bug still in place for dropping and decorating, it is a nuisance. The racks, mannequins, etc. are nice, but the bug is killing my decorating.

The book shelves, weapon racks & mannequin's are nice additions. It would be nice to have more control over the styles of decorations, but i'd settle with them fixing objects i place in my home flying all over the place when i return.

It's hard to feel the house is your home when you can't fine tune it, placing decorations and stuff.

That's why I'm happy to settle with my horse as my house. (Which I've customised to follow simple commands like wait and follow, and to carry my stuff for me ;p) - then i can hit the road and always be home.

Allowing players a choice between two or three different styles or layouts for each house would have been cool ...

Not sure if you know this but you can decorate using the console. You can set the angle to 0 for the objects and then move them using the x,y,z cordinates. once you done it a few times it's easy.

Here are my insects-in-a-jar on display on my shelf.

I can't understand why they called it "home decorations". I think "home furnishings" would have been much more appropriate a term.

And why is it I can only buy my furniture from (spoiler)? Seems like the real estate market is rigged in Skyrim!!

In time, player themed house decorating will hopefully be 1000x easier once a skilled modder converts this mod over to work with Skyrim.........

Thank you. I did not know this and my place is a mess. Now, as someone who is not very good at using these controllers, how do I "set an object at 0", and then move them using the "x, y' and z coordinates"?

How do I get more weapon racks, book shelves, and chests in my home? It is fully decorated at this point. I need a dozen more weapon racks, and 3-4 more bookshelves, plus I never heard of a mannequin, how do I get one? (Or 5?)

BTW: I am in Whiterun. I don't know if that matters.

I read there was an option to have the house cleaned but I didn't see it, it was suppose to be at the bottom of the list and disappears after you choose one of the above. I don't use the Windhelm house because of that bug.

Does this work for objects that come with the house or objects that you bring into the house, or both? Are objects set in this way immune to the 'decorating explosion' bug?

Could you copy-paste instructions for us all?

You have to buy the cleaning 'decoration' before you buy decorations for the sections that are dirty.

Regarding placing things in the home.. Place what you want on the floor, go out and do something for a day (Or wait/sleep.. But OUTSIDE the house) return and then place your item where you wanna place it..

Example;
I wanted to place all my gems in a kettle.. I did so and everything were splashed around, my dibella statue where in the cooking cauldron (lol) and so on..
I place everything on the floor, went out for a day then returned.. THEN placed everything where i wanted it.. Worked for me..

Decorating with console commands works with items you bring in and ones already in the house. You can even use the console to add your own items, like bookselves etc. Yes doing this way will not cause the explosion bug. Once it's set, it's set.

Decorate with console commands

Step 1
Create a text file called "noangle" and add this code:

setangle x 0
setangle y 0
setangle z 0

Add the file to the main Skyrim folder

Step 2
Create a text file called "getpos" and add this code:

getpos x
getpos y
getpos z

Add the file to the main Skyrim folder

Step 3
In game open the console. Now click on the item you want to move so it's ID is shown. The first thing to do is set the angle to 0 so type in this command:

bat noangle

Close the console and the object will reset.

Step 4
Now you need to find it's cordinates. Open the console again and click the object if not already selected. Type in this command:

bat getpos

This will display the x,y,z cordinates for the object. Leave console open and start step 5.

Step 5
Now you know the cordinates you can move it by using the setpos command. Example:
setpos x 250

There are also commands to rotate object and to set scale. There is a massive thread over at nexus that will help you decorate so use this for reference.

It's only a matter of game mechanics that conventional houses are dragon-proof ;)

I tried placing somethings around the house but my stupid [censored] wife picks them up and hands them to me and says I dropped them and to be more careful.

Will try your suggestion, thanks. On another note, I did read however one of the main causes of items flying like when you open a door and things get scattered is due to a known v-sync bug. Many pc users turn v sync off because it puts a cap on fps, but it is suggested to turn it on to reduce the chances of items scattering.

Buy a 2nd or 3rd house. You can't buy bookshelves or weapon racks.

@ the OP: If you have issues with Hjerim and you are on PC, check out this thread:

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1303955-hjerim-house-purchase-depite-quest-bug/

Btw. I like the additions of the bookshelves. Makes placing books so much easier, especially with the new physics of books. I had to manually place hundreds of books on shelves in Oblivion hahahaha (yea yea, didn't use the mod someone made).

But yea, with a bit of patience, you too can have a personalized home! =P I love decorating, even so it can be a pain, since I have to do it twice, because the cell just throws my stuff back on the floor, when I re-enter it. It usually "get's it" the 2nd time around. LOL

Also, be careful what you drop outside. I tried to stash some dragon scales outside the Whiterun house, before I bought it (started a new toon) and when I left to finish some quests and came back, they were gone.

Here's a great thread with some tips on how to keep your items where you want them:

Unfortunately, I'm on PS3. Like I said, Fallout gave you some choices in style.

If they aren't going to allow that, at least allow anchor points so that I can place a moth jar upright. I spent about five minutes getting a moth jar to sit on the table next to my bed. When I came back, it was on the floor.

I won't even get into the broken bookcases and mannequins.

Still, some of the houses are pretty cool. I would love to have one with a smithing operation. Maybe there is one in one of the many houses I do not yet own?

The house in Whiterun is so close to the smith that I have no problem overloading myself sometimes and getting there to make stuff. Also, if you become the Harbringer of the Companions, that place is next to the Skyforge which you can use to make some special stuff.
