You favorite and not so favorite voice actors

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 10:58 pm

Here's my top 5 (in no particular order) and some honerable mentions:

Karliah (Moira Quirk) - Even though I have to redo my mix during this quest because her tracks are so damn low in volume, her voice is just soooo soft and soothing and oh so easy to listen to. She just turns me into a pile of goo...

Paarthurnax (Charles Martinet) - If I had to choose just one for the emmy, this would be it. Just amazing and probably the most convincing performance in the game. He took a character that I totally expected to want to hate (and slay) into one that I simply cannot bring most of my characters to kill.

Barbas (Stephen Russell) - When I found Barbas the first time, that Costello-esque accent was so completely unexpected, and so shockingly different from anything else in the game I was just grinning from ear to ear, lol. My kudos for whoever decided to voice the dog with that accent. Unfortunately, Russell is also in my most annoying voices list as well. (See below) But the dude certainly has immense talent because if I had not looked it up at IMDB I would never had imagined they were the same actor. And I wouldn't have known he was in Fallout 3 either. He's VERY talented!

Cicero (Andy Morris) - This was another of the most convincing performances in the game, if not a little annoying. But he was SUPPOSED to be annoying, so he hit it spot on!

Astrid (Cindy Robinson) - Another very, very well done part. She plays the villan beautifully.

Notice anything missing? No big name actors were in my list! The only one of the big names that I would even give a couple of stars to would be maybe Arngeir. But for the most part I felt these screen actors were lifeless and just plain old flat. Most disappointing was Joan Allen. All of the "big 3" are incredible screen actors, but their voice work just felt uninspired to me.

Honerable mention: As always, the incredible Wes Johnson, & Vladimir Kulich (Ulfric Stormcloak)

Worst? I cannot stand the voice of Belethor and the others done in his voice. Hearing him is like nails down a chalkboard to me ears. And that's really surprising because the same actor voiced one of my faves as well.

Im going with Delvin Mallory.

Barbas too, I laughed my ass off when a talking dog in a dark-age setting game had a new york accent.

I can't stand the voice of Nuriellion's assistant/Erik the slayer. This voice actor sounds as if hes always trying way too hard.

I like the guards accents. The rest confuse me with their sticky paste like mixture of spanish/scottish/whatever

I turn voices off completely. I really dislike VA in games, so I never hear any of them.

Did you know that he is the voice actor of Mario?

Anyway, my favourites are (No paticular order):

Corri English: Jarl Elisif, Ysolda, additional voices. - One of the best female voices in the game, the characters she voices sound much happier than other characters.

Christopher Smith: Molag Bal - Sounds so evil, a perfect voice for Molag.

André Sogliuzzo: Male Khajiit - This voice is just so cool, shame Khajiit aren't allowed in cities.

Wes Johnson: Sheogorath - It's Wes Johnson, my favourite voice actor in Oblivion and Fallout 3. I wish he voiced an old Imperial Legionary that just wants to live in peace, no more stopping criminal scum.

Stephen Russell: Barbas, Clavicus Vile, Mercer Frey, additional voices. - The amount of characters he voices with different voices is amazing.

Jean Gilpin: Elenwen, Meridia, and Boetheia - A good villian voice for two evil characters. Elenwen is the head of the Thalmor in Skyrim. I don't want to spoil Boethia's quest for any that haven't played it yet. Meridia is only evil if you're a Necromancer.

Not favourites:

Craig Sechler: Hircine - Why did Bethesda use the Oblivion elf voice for Hircine? Hircine's Oblivion/Bloodmoon voice was really good.

I cannot tolerate Mjoll. Even with great tanking skills, I dumped her for Vorstag because I cannot stand how hard she hits those Rs.

I HATE Karliah's voice. She says every single thing the EXACT same way. Always through clenched teeth and like she's trying to take a dump. I wish I could put her on mute.

Mercer Frey/Belethor's voice is the worst, however. You can almost smell the alcohol on his breath when he talks.

I didn't like Ulfric's voice acting at first, but after learning about his BAMF voice actor I think he's my favorite now. Particularly the speeches he gives, he does an amazing job (much better than even Sean Bean as Martin, and I freaking love Sean Bean).

I also like the male/female Altmer voices. They are adorable. Oh, and J'zargo. He is such a cutie.

I like:

Christopher Plummer (Arngier): He had me at "the turning of the age." I love his voice.

Michael Donovan (Malacath): His voice sold me on that character. The way he gets emotional when talks about all the prisoners stories.

I don't like:

Joan Allen (Dephine): I don't know. It's like nothing. Just a woman talking.

Andrew Morris (Cicero): Annoying, in a word.

The guards voices get old after a while.

There is a lot of top notch voice acting in Skyrim.

Brynjolf's voice actor - I forget his name - is definitely among my favorites.

As for the worst...the female Scandinavian-ish accents get annoying after a while.

I thought all the voice acting was excellent. The one that bothers me is when the Dunmer male VA does an English accent- it sounds fake.

I was really surprised to read that the VA for most of the Nord jarls, Alvor, Ralof etc. wasn't Scandi. I think he did a great job with the accent, and I like his voice. It's a good thing since he's way over-used. Sometimes he's in a conversation with himself, like with Ralof and Hod. I hope he got a fat paycheck for all that work.

The male Altmer voice is probably my favorite, even if the Thalmor are prigs. When the Psijic monk and Nelacar talk... *swoon*

Brynjolf, 'nuff said. He just needed more dialogue with you after the quest line ended. His "sorry lass, no time for you" gets on my nerves.

Oh and Ulfric goes without saying... Buliwyf lives forever!!!!

They don't talk to each other, I just meant when they talk to your PC. Because I think they're the only time that VA gets to play someone who's actually nice.

Ah! Heh, boy, I really misread that. Okay, that makes more sense, though really I was almost hoping there was some truly twisted meeting or something!

I suppose it's possible they could have had Nelacar involved with the Eye. The one time I've noticed that VA in a conversation with himself is in the embassy basemant, when the soldiers are discussing how "Herself" has started to worry about the dragons and how they hope the dragons eat the mages first, har har har.

Jason Marsden is really annoying in this. At first when I heard Sven in the Sleeping Giant I was like, "Hey, it's Boone!" Then when I got to Whiterun and talked to Mikael it was like,"Hey, It's Boone." Then after the fifth or so time of hearing this guy running around skyrim It's like, "Hey... It's Boone...again..." He just does the same thing over and over. He doesn't try and sound different at all for any of the characters he voices.

I was particularly fond of Michael Gough who does the voice of Jarl Baalgruff and Ralof he puts alot of emotion and feeling into it. Also Cicero (Andrew Morris) was brilliant. You could tell that guy had alot of fun doing that one.

Worst voice ever:

"I used to be an adventurer like you then I took an arrow to knee"
"A guard might get nervous if a man approaches with his weapon drawn..."
"Get back here you theif scum!"
Know who that is?
I also think Nords are all way to repetitive...

"For Sovngarde!"
"My final resting place is in Sovngarde!"
"We shall meet again in Sovngarde, my brother."
Anyways you get it.

Wes Johnson (Sheogorath, Emperor, Heramous Mora, Spectral Assassin)- He is easily my favorite Male VA, why he isn't voicing all the guards like Oblivion is beyond me, maybe Beth could set that up as DLC. Still couldn't believe he voiced Mora, Beth must've did some awesome job with the audio tweaking to make it deeper. The Spectral Assassin is just beautiful.

Kari Wahlgren (Vex) Love her voice and she voiced some of my favorite characters in past video games (Ashe Final Fantasy XII, Setsuka Soulcaliber).

Least Favorite
Ciccero's VA is annoying but their some talent with that.

Max Von Sydow (Esbern) Max is an incredible actor but I really did not like his performace as Esbern, maybe it was the writing or the voice tone but I just can't get attached to him like I did with Uriel VII (Patrick Stewart or Picard) or James (Liam Neeson).
