I met an orc named 'Orc' in the Bannered Mare in Whiterun once. Even though I have 100 speech, I can never intimidate him when he tries to start something with me. He always ends up fighting me and I have to kill him.

I persuade.

However, sometimes threats work, and gold even better.

I'm a nice argonian, so I prefer to use persuade. If that don't work? Then I threaten.

Depends on the Race. My Beast-Men, Elves and Bretons will often persuade/bribe. However, my Orcs, Nords and Imperials are more likely to "RAAAAAAAAWWWWWWRRRRRR I KNOW WHAT I WANT AND I WANT IT NOW ELSE I SMASH WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

That was a little carried away...

Depends on the character I'm playing. Most of mine use Persuade, but my Chaotic Neutral ;) Dunmer will switch back and forth depending on how I think he would feel about the situation; my Breton thief used it on a couple of NPCs because her Persuade wouldn't work on them! My mage, however, knows perfectly well he isn't intimidating (unless wearing Flame Cloak or something).

I play a burly Nord Warrior.
But I like to persuade if I can. He's the type of guy that'll try asking nicely first, before finally losing his nerve and moving onto intimidation.

Intimidating gets things done faster, in my opinion.

I usually start with persuasion, but if my target is obstinate I will not hesitate to move to intimidation.

I have only bribed people a few times, and every time I did it it was because I wanted to maintain my image.

The choice has very little to do with having a personal preference for one or the other. You'd be stupid if all you ever do is to persuade people or to always intimidate them. You'd either become some spineless creep if you always try to persuade everyone, or you turn into a Saddam Hussein impersonator. So for me it depends on who I am talking to and how they have acted. If they act cowardly, for example, then I intimidate them, because I dislike cowardliness. If they appear to be good, honest people, even when they have done something wrong, then I only try to persuade them and not to bother them. Sadly, the game too often sees a payment just as a bribe, which I find is wrong, and so I stopped using payments altogether.

There are so few opportunities to do either, that the question seems rather moot in my opinion.

I don't wear top-tier armor and equipment, so intimidation simply doesn't work for me. Bribing people feels more natural than persuading.

Exactly, besides the outcome of the action has no bearing what so ever. The ONLY difference is the selection. It's still the same button with the same outcome. It's just as easy to pay up.

in a rpg i would have thought that the entire speech system would have been advanced, especially, after morrowind, oblivion, and the fallouts. especially, a series that has done so well with the skill in the past.

lackluster implementation.

very disappointing.

Persuading for 'good' characters and intimidating for 'bad' characters, intimidating also makes a bad character for me, it just makes you feel so badass when words alone can make people fear you

I play a good character and always try to persuade more. However, I will sometimes try to intimidate if need be. Intimidating someone is NOT something just bad characters do. Sometimes a good character may need to intimidate a bad person to avoid a needless fight that may cause needless death and destruction.

Well, I haven't played Fallout so I can't talk about that. But I don't think TES has done so well with the skill in the past at all. Our chances to actually influence the outcome of anything through persuation were few and far between in both Morrowind and Oblivion. As I see it, this is not a new phenomenon with Skyrim. It is a continuation of a flaw that has existed in many games before Skyrim.

Actually, Morrowind and Oblivion had plenty of chances to use Speechcraft. Try asking somebody about certain topics, and if their disposition is too low, they refuse to tallk to you about it. You just admire/intimidate/bribe it up. Need (or want) to kill somebody in public without it being a crime? Taunt them. You could get better prices at merchnats, too.

I have a sugar tongue and talk everybody into anything I want them to do.

I do wish that there was an option that didn't automatically made you level up towards your Speech (other than leaving). Silly useless skill.

I, too, play an assassin, but I usually try to persuade first. If that option fails, then I intimidate.
