Do you revert back to saves?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:35 pm

I've always wondered what people actually do, for example when a companion dies or you fail a quest or use a lot of ammo, health, etc.

Whenever one of my companion dies I usually go back to a save, or I tick off a faction or something.
I mean, if you do that in real life, there is no going back, you know? For example in Oblivion if you committed a crime and went to jail, you could just revert back to a save, instead of serving it.

wow you're not hardcoe, each time my character needs to run from a fight I reroll him and start all over again.

jk, of course I revert back to saves, specially when I grow tired of trying to fix a bug with the console or when ED-E dies mostly.

Yeah I do it too. In fact, I save during places I have choices (major ones) so I can come back and re-do that part, choosing the other option.

If a companion dies in battle, or I get my limbs crippled by a random landmine, I keep playing. I usually only revert if it's a complete fluke.

Depends on the situation and my frustration level and whether I feel the battle was fair or not.

Companion death, for a companion that I care about, always results in a reload.

Of course. I'll reload if I get I dialogue path I'm not satisfied with, never mind if I mess up a quest.

I always have a series of saves about every half hour along the way, not counting the ones I use as I go along. It is not if someone dies but if a quest does not work out the way I want it to. For example, the other night I was doing some things for a casino and I ended up with an unrelated side quest. Well, if I did the casino quest one way, it failed the side quest, if I did the casino thing a different way, the side quest went away (assuming it was resolved successfully), but no experience. So I had to do it a third way in a sligthly different order, to get the side quest, and casino quest and both come out the way I wanted them to.

Plus, with several quests going and different way points in each quest, things are going to glitch from time to time. Nothing to do about it but load a save from before the glitch and proceed.

that's right, if you never reload, you'll have to do 3 playthroughs with completely different decisions in order to enjoy full game content.

More like if you never reload, you'll have to do 49 partial playthroughs to ever finish the game without suffering at least one massive setback incited by some insidious glitch that couldn't be tracked down and fixed because they were too busy with important things like adding Caravan.

Same here. I always run 2 saves side by side and a 3rd save on backup and all the saves backed up every so often onto a memory stick. :D Its not like I had OCD or anything :cryvaultboy:

I rarely revert to the backup saves tho, they are only there in case the game 'Load Crashes' thru a door or randomly crashes.

I was talking about this to a friend yesterday...

I never reload and that is the honest truth. I only reload if i get stuck on something, like a rock or die and of course then i am forced to reload. :)

But if i lose a companion which i have...(Boone,Rex,Lilly) i leave them dead. if i attack a faction or kill somebody i didn't mean too, i leave it and play with the consequences. I guess its because i role-play as i play?

After my first playthrough, i always add my own companions etc... so if i have a few companions lost in battle then a couple days later i add some more around the world and then recruit them.

If i was playing on Console though i would certainly reload my saves.

It depends on if it was a glitch or not. When I entered one of the vaults my companions who I told to wait somewhere popped up after I used the elevator. Ed died and I reloaded because I didn't want him there to begin with. Other than that though I let them all die.

I revert, but try not to. I have had times when I mistakenly hit the wrong dialogue option. Left the mouse cursor slightly in the box and used the keys, so as soon as I let go of the key and before I hit enter it popped to the bottom choice. I didn't want to kill him right away.

Typically when my companions go running off and set off a chain reaction of traps that causes all of us to die.

I was trying to run a side by side (one good the other evil) and that was too complicated for me, so I just opted for multiple play troughs.

I revert if companions die, but that would be why I made them all essential. The rest, meh. I'll reload if I run into a major glitch but otherwise I don't bother. If I run out of ammo, I run out of ammo. It's annoying, but reloading is moreso.

You make is sound as though that's a bad thing. With so many ways to play this game, I'd rather side with a different faction for each play through, and make different decisions with each. For instance, I sided with Goodsprings for that first real quest. In that play through, I also chose the NCR. Next time, I will probably side with the Powder Gangers for that quest. Why would you want such a stuttered game as to play every option in a single play through? Doesn't it get terribly fractured?

As for saves, I'm on the Xbox and I have 100 (max). When I started hearing about 20 corrupted files, I figured I'd just make more saves, and hope. I have zero clue as to whether or not the additional saves could be helpful though. I'm not on hardcoe, so I don't have to worry about companions dying. I often save before a big decision, if I have no idea what it's going to do. For instance, I went into the irradiated vault without a quest, so when it came to decision time, I didn't know that one option would remove the other. I didn't know what the buttons would do really. So, I saved first. When I found that I could only have one option, and not both, I reloaded and chose the other. Maybe that's not role-playing, but I really didn't like the first option I went with because it was so far off from what my character would do. On the other hand, with the info I had available, I suppose it was.

It depends, sometimes I prefer to just live with the concequences, sometimes, I reload. Really, it mostly depends on whether what happened is what I want to happen (Say, if I decide I don't like a certain faction, and I don't want to be friends with them, I wouldn't reload if they started hating me.) or if it's an accident (Say, a quest related NPC getting killed, or a companion being killed, but that isn't an issue for me right now since I'm not playing in hardcoe mode.) I don't reload just to try each possible choice, usually, I only reload if things aren't going according to plan.

that's right, if you never reload, you'll have to do 3 playthroughs with completely different decisions in order to enjoy full game content.

That doesn't sound like a bad thing to me, really, this is the kind of game which I'd say SHOULD encourage replaying. In any case, it's certainly not unreasonable that you're not able to choose all possible options in the same play-through.

haha i would say most people do, if you say you do not, you are most likely lying. Everyone makes mistakes unless you are on the forums or wiki looking up every single thing to do correctly before you do them lol.

P.S and the bugs and glitches.

I reload if my companions die. Their AI does stupid things and I never feel like my choices are causing them to die.

If I mess up a quest, lose caps at the casino, get irradiated, or eat a ton of ammo on a bad guy I just svck it up and keep moving.

I ended up killing a lot of people that closed out quests for me because I talked with my fists too much. Oh well. Now I have something to do on my next play-through. :)

I reload after companions die in hardcoe mode. If the AI for companions was a bit better and we had a real "RETREAT!" command, then maybe I wouldnt have to do it as much. But these companions are stupid! Running right through mine fields, direct into heavy gunfire, radiation, huge groups of enemies, you name it. My excuse is, I wont be punished for stupid AI.

Before embarking on a major fork in a quest line I sometimes save and see how its going to pan out. If it doesn't seem like a path my character should have taken I occasionally will revert back to the old save. Sometimes I just let the chips fall where they may though.
