"You Thieving Little Elf"

An NPC said that to me after I stole something from them. I'm not an elf! I'm a Nord!

Nice. I guess they were using it a descriptive word rather than a noun. Racial generalisation at its finest.

Nords and elves don't get along, news at 11.

Well, Skyrim never has been known for its scholars...

What about Tolfdir at the College of Winterhold? He doesn't exactly fit the stereotype everybody loves to apply to Nords. I guess it's not fair to say all elves are scheming thieves, or all Khajiits are drug dealers, but it's fine to say all Nords are dumb meatheads.

It's funny because I returned after three days, she forgot all about me murdering her husband, she had me do a quest, I did it for her, then she was willing to travel with me as my companion. It is at that point that I made her wear her dead husband's ugly little hat. lol

I'm just saying you're far less likely to come across a scholarly nord than you are a dumb-barbaric one, and this circumstance proves it... And along with the stereotypes, I've only met one Khajiit that isn't involved in Skooma or Moon Sugar.

Obviously, the word 'elf' was used as an insult because the stereo type in Skyrim is probably that elves are small and they steal stuff. Anyone notice how racist they are in Windhelm towards dark elves? I'm Breton, and I actually fist faught a guy because he was talking so much smack about dark elves.

After all i have done for Skyrim (companions, main, and stormcloak questlines completed), all the guards say is "i know you....you're from that college!"
 I never even joined the college. Just had to gate open to learn about something ancient. (Spoiler-

No, folks like Tolfdir just never followed the rest of their kind to Cyrodill.

Maybe they find it hard to look fondly on the Dunmer because they've been going on slave raids for centuries? :ermm:
Come to think of it, for how racist the Nords apparently are, have they ever been explicitly mentioned as participating in slavery? I don't believe the lore ever mentioned the Nords widely owning slaves, but http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Slavery and the Dunmer still practice it. Even if the Nords did this too, it's pretty clear from this that they're not unique in their racism, and at least they're not slave-owners.

Owning slaves doesn't necessarily mean that you are racist. Many cultures for centuries traded slaves of many orgins, including people from their own country. Possibly people judged to be criminals or people who couldn't pay their debt. Maybe even people who were simply just born slaves within their civilization. The fact that a certain people control another race of people could really be due to the spoils of war, and not racism. Although, withing every culture, there will be some hostility toward outsiders, but my main point is that slave trade is usually a result of warfare and does not necessarily make the society racist. They may just believe in owning slaves. Not that I support the idea of slavery... Just sayin'.

Okay, but Dunmer target Argonians and Khajiit in particular, so clearly they don't think too highly of those races in that society.

Why should the Dunmer like Argonians? They took took over Morrowind. As for Khajiits, I really don't know what beef the Dunmer have with them but no race really seems to like them.

But there is a lot of racism in Skyrim, which I like a lot. It provides plenty of conflict, as it should. Skyrim is a darker, more barbaric place and the races that inhabit Skyrim hold many more prejudices than what was shown in Cyrodiil which makes the whole world much more believable.

I do think the racism is very realistic in the storyline since obviously most primitive cultures are very hostile toward outsiders and thus racist. It just makes sense and I love how they made this a very clear part of life within their civilization. It goes hand in hand with their religions and wars. They did a great job on making the story more complex than Oblivion. Like the treaty between the Altmer and the Imperials which banned Talos warship. I keep wondering why the Imperials would agree to ban the warship of an Imperial God who was also the first emperor of Cyrodil. Weird.
