I think currently it's Bethesda who runs the RPG genre. But out of all their titles, only the series The Elder Scrolls and Fallout (being not completely theirs) are Role-Playing games. I was wondering, will Bethesda ever release a new RPG game completely independent from those 2 series? If so, when do you think? And what kind of game could it be?

PS: By completely independent, I don't mean it as in gameplay mechanics, (Oblivion and FO3 had similar gameplay mechanics, and it worked out well) I mean the setting

I thought the fallout and elder scrolls were the only games they developed.

i doubt it. i mean bear in mind they've only really got one development team. the TES/Fallout switchoff thing seems good - they spend two or three years on each title, long enough to make them distinct from each other and short enough that people still stay interested. throwing another franchise into that mix would mess up the balance a lot.

it seems more likely that they'll occasionally let one of their franchises be handled by an outside developer, like with Obsidian and New Vegas. i can see Arkane easily doing something bearing the Elder Scrolls name, even if it's not mechanically identical to the core series, and judging by how great NV has done i fully expect Bethesda's relationship with Obsidian to continue.

he's doing what everyone else does and combining both into the same entity, but his question can be rephrased clearly enough - "Will Bethesda Game Studios ever start a new IP that plays fundamentally similarly to their past titles?"

I think they have their hands full now that they have both TES and FO. I don't we'll be seeing any new IPs from BGS for a long time.

Really like the sound of the games Bethesda Softworks is going to publish though. Didn't care for Brink, Hunted, WET or god forbid Rogue Warrior, but Dishonored and Prey 2 are looking very interesting, and RAGE too.

Would be nice to see a dystopian sci fi sandbox rpg... or some sort of space ship travel thing..

As far as I know and if I remember correctly, Bethesda has licence for two more fallout games. And they said they will certainly do more of them. I also cannot imagine they'd just abandon TES games.

I can't imagine they'd have enough time to make something new besides those two either, TES has, after all, nearly two decades of lore behind it.

Well Bethesda Game Studios has 2 teams, I beleive. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I am sure I read somewhere, where Bethesada has 2 teams, both working on games, wich at the time were unannounced, and now one of them is Skyrim wich we all believed. The other wich is still unannoucned most of us belive is Fallout 4, but no confirmation or even a hint of that yet. So if the other team is not working on Fallout 4, who knows what it can be then.

I've always felt like BGS would be great at doing a western RPG set in a Final Fantasy-like setting. Sort of futuristic fantasy, I guess, but still within the style of Beth games.

They have their hands pretty full with the two IPs (Intellectual Properties) that they develop now. I don't think you will see a new IP until they undergo some pretty large growth.

Are you sure? I thought they owned the Fallout IP permanently.

I don't know. After the success of FO3 they farmed out New Vegas to Obsidian (blech). I always thought it was to concentrate development resources back on ES V. If that were the case I would think they have their hands full with two franchises.

I think they packed in a little too many gameplay mechanics and such. But generally, it was good. Felt a little excessive in some areas.

My thought exactly! It'd be awesome if Josh Weedon were to collaborate on the script and background story of such an epic (to-be for sure) story! From interviews he gave, he had a complete and complex universe in his mind...

If that were the case and other developers followed their style I'd be left with boring 3 line characters with no emotion and a terrible storyline to boot.
