Do you think in words or images?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 6:34 pm

As the title say, do you think in words or images? I always tend to think in words. When I daydream I don't actually picture the place or the people or anything, it's like a novel in my head. I was just curious to see how/what everyone thinks. One of my friends says she can remember things from school by seeing the textbook exactly in her mind, I can't do that but I'm good at memorising things word for word. Also, if you are trying to remember a dream, can you remember what the places and people looked like, or can you just remember the details? As in, "There was a lake, with otters in it." Or can you actually picture exactly what it looked like? I never see in my head what things from dreams looked like but I can remember it like a story.

Sorry if this makes absolutely no sense, I was writing it as it came in to my head so it's probably a bit jumble. I hope you can understand what I mean though

I would say I think in both at times varying them as necessary since my mind is odd. Example would be a story i'm writing and what I do is visualize what is going on then my mind puts it into words like you would read captions below a movie for the hearing impaired.

Pictures mostly, I think. I only see words if I'm trying to spell something difficult, and even then the letters will float like a picture in my brain. I tend to over-think certain situations which is an unfortunate side-effect of having such vivid pictures in my mind.
When I think of days of the week I'll see each day as a square with squares next to it stretching away from me, just like a calender in my mind.

I've heard things like this called http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia before, but I think everyone has this to an extent.

I think in colours and feelings

if that makes any sense, which it probably doesn't, but that's nothing unusual; my thoughts rarely make any sense.

Both, depending on context (usually pictures and sounds though). If I'm daydreaming or just thinking about random stuff, I think in pictures and sounds. However, if I'm thinking about something I explicitly memorized, like notes or whatever, I think in words.

Images definitely. Like your friend I see an image of word in a book that I need to remember. I make a point of writing down important information so that I can go back in my mind and watch my self write it out to see what it was. When I'm working on a problem, be it a broken car, computer or line of code, I create a graphical representation in my mind of how all the pieces interact with each other in a Rube Goldberg fashion. This helps me "see" the likley places where the problem could be.

I've never really been able to answer this, maybe because I don't really understand the question. I just have thoughts. I don't really see how anyone can classify their thoughts by such simple definitions as "words" or "images." There's so much going on in my mind at once that I can't really choose one, the other, or both. It's words, images, numbers, sounds, feelings, logic, percentages, experience, instinct, and just everything coming together at once. It's a thought. I can't really explain it.

I don't know if I'm weird like that or if I'm just terrible at simplifying the description.

I'm sure I think in both. This thread reminds me of Temple Grandin. She is a very accomplished autistic woman who designs humane slaughterhouses because she thinks in images, and visualizes what the animals see, and bases her designs on those impressions.
You can Google her, if you're not already familiar with her life and work. Tremendous speaker [and author] on the entire subject as well.

[edit] Personally I don't see how it's possible not to think in both.

Huh, interesting question. I'd say mainly pictures. The only times I think I think (:P) in words is when I am singing/listening to music, reading or listening to people speak.

Both...I tend to associate things conceptually, though, so individual items in my stream of thoughts seem to end up there based on their conceptual relationship rather than absolute attributes (color, time period, visual representation, etc.)
