Do you use fast travel?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:47 pm

I've been trying not to use fast travel, but walking everywhere is such a chore. If there were a first person view for horses then it would be fine, but walking is so slow.

Do you?

Nope. In fact, I use the No Fast Travel mod just to make sure I'm not tempted.

Never. Played only 50hours since the game came out tho. Maybe thats why I'm not bored of walking around. Lots of random things happens while travelling on foot its awesome

a lot of the game would be so boring without it, because you would constantly need to be running back to towns to sell your loot if you dont invest your points in stamina, but with the carriages it is a more viable solution than Oblivion and you really are rewarded for walking because you get to see all different things

Absolutely. Coming out of a dungeon after an hours long experience with one or none restore health potions and then having to trudge from BFE to the nearest town with just one pound of carry to spare just svcks. Inevitably an especially strong dragon will show up or I'll wander into a band of Forsworn; Skyrim's version of psychotically angry meth-head hillbillies.
When I've overdone it and it's 2 in the morning after II vowed to stop playing at midnight, Fast Travel is my best friend.

I tend to use it when I'm trying to earn cash. Say at the start of the game, you're in Riverwood but want to collect all the gear from that dungeon. So I end up making a couple trips to collect everything and sell it off. But sometimes I want to either walk or use a horse. Thought of using that no fast travel mod, but I would start to get a bit ticked off if I had to walk all the time.

Basically what Bacillus anthracis just said!

Nope. I'm playing a style which is more bent on realism, where I'm only doing missions of urgency or that make sense to my character, so naturally no FT is included. Having to plan out an entire journey on foot based on where my current missions start/end is strangely rewarding. At one point I had to go from Riften to Windhelm to complete a Civil War mission, then I went up near Winterhold for a Thieves Guild quest, then across to a dungeon near Dawnstar to find a quest item, then to Dawnstar itself for some RnR (though I quickly found myself helping the townfolk with their dream problem), then it was down to Whiterun to finish off some missions, then down further to Riverwood to continue the Main Quest, then over to Ivarstead and High Hrothgar for more MQ goodness, then back to Riften.

The end experience is one of cohesion and higher immersion, where every mission is given a greater sense of importance. I have found that just jumping here and there with a full quest log can detach a person (myself included) from the overall experience, so I recommend my play style to all. Of course, FT travel is fine, but not as rewarding as visiting 5 or 6 cities on quest related business without backtracking.

Ehh somewhat in Oblivion, but that's because I had plenty of Skooma and a decent Speed skill. I don't fast travel at all in Morrowind though. If I'm feeling lazy, I take a silt strider.

In Skyrim I do it all the time though.

I would refrain from fast travel if I could actually explore the world map without the fps becoming unbearable, but seeing how broken the state of Skyrim on PS3 is I always use it.

Very rarely. It's something I got used to during Fallout 3. After playing for 9 months of abusing fast travel and not finding Uncle Leo once, I stopped using it. Within a week of not using it I had found him.

Prior to the LAA patch fast travelling was one of the isolated events that caused CTD so I started using them very rarely.

Tsk Tsk. Walking=exploration. exploration=seeing more things. seeing more things=seeing more people. seeing more people=more quests. Nothing beats a walk on a night night with the Northern Lights going about.

Fast travel is useful for those moments when you arrive at what you think is the location for your quest, but you never activated the quest because you tabbed out of conversation with the NPC on the other side of Skyrim.

I liked Morrowind's system of fast travel which allowed you to use real-world transportation to go from city to city, but you still got your fair share of exploration because you couldn't fast travel into the wilderness. You can do that with the carriages in Skyrim, but they cost why too much money. 20 or 50 gold every time you use the carriage compared to usually about 9 or 10 gold in Morrowind? No thanks.

I'm in agreement with this. As much as I like to travel Skyrim and see it's sights, there are times when I'm done with that and just want to get back to a town quickly, stock up, sell stuff and head back out again, on foot of course. There's many interesting locations that aren't marked on you map and can't be fast travelled to so you miss much if you use it all the time.

I walk unless I have to travel up and down the same road a few times to pick up some guy's dry-cleaning. If there is no wagon nearby or the wagon doesn't take me near the destination, I'll fast travel.

Especially when you run into a dragon, and then an assassin engages you, then a mudcrab comes out of nowhere...you just want to cry out "come on!?!" True story by the way and ended up dying in the vice grip of the unsuspecting mudcrab.

Yup. I love to fast travel. To get to a new location requires enough walking and action. I often get back before entering the location to sell the stuff I picked up along the journey and fast travel back to the destination. That way I can enter with an empty inventory. Once I leave the location chances are that my inventory is full, so I rather fast travel back to sell my stuff. Besides, the route back probably just contains corpses. ;)

The only fast travel I allow in mine are wagons and I didn't use that for my first playthrough. I like immersion and I feel like fast travel destroys it for me.
