Your Current Opinion of the Nords #2

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 4:20 pm

I begun fairly ambivalent with them, then begun to support them and their rebellion...

Now I hate them, for how they led to what Snow Elves became, they're not the only group to blame, but they're the only live ones, so I hate them a lot.

How do others feel about them?

sure they were rude but not so ignorant and arrogant as to completely disregard magic and look down on it as well as every other race.

Iirc the great antipathy towards magic is apparently a phenomenon not unique to Skyrim that followed the Oblivion Crisis. I've also yet to meet a race in TES that doesn't in some way look down on the other races. Even the Imperials have an air of superiority about them

The Stormcloaks goal is to drive the Empire out of Skyrim so that the WGC is no longer valid there correct? It's the Thalmor who enforce the Talos ban so go after the Thalmor, I'm sure that the Penitus Occultis aren't going to go on Talos Torture detail. It would be a much smaller fight and much more in the back-ground as opposed to the all out war with the Empire which kills so many.

Remember that the Empire was forced to renounce Hammerfell when they continued to fight against the Thalmor. Due to the treaty the Empire can't just allow a province under their control to take action against the Thalmor, and they obviously aren't willing to let Skyrim go...

Wow, as if I didn't despise Dunmer before reading this. Excuse, I'm off to cleanse the Snow Quarter.

That author doesn't speak for all the Dunmer in Windhelm, obviously. It's an extreme viewpoint.

(sigh) Or idk maybe it isn't? I said how they were presented. Not how they are. There are plenty of Nords that are cool and the culture is something I like. I don't like a majority of the people I meet but I still enjoy the culture of the place I live in. However they majority of the Nords are presented as dumbasses or ignorant (try playing as a mer or beast race) and I don't like that as it is not how the Nords acted in according to the Lore, sure they were rude but not so ignorant and arrogant as to completely disregard magic and look down on it as well as every other race.

It's alright dude I feel you. I love everything Akaviri despite history not remembering them very fondly.

What your objecting to is a potential lore [censored]-up with Bethesda in regards to Nord presentation right? As a Fallout die-hard I can say that I have felt that sting myself.

If the Stormcloaks care so much why not attack the Thalmor Embassy? Why not drive the Thalmor out and expose their agents? Because Ulfric is a power-hungry nob riding on public hate or a hypocritical fool who doesn't know what he's doing - whichever you prefer.

That's just for gameplay reasons, because people might not have finished the MQ before they finish the civil war. You don't see any Thalmor delegations in Stormcloak territory, do you?

[censored], that is a good point.

But there can always be front efforts camoflaging true intent. For example the Jarl of Solitude asks you to take a token to a Talos Shrine for her. I mean let's face facts, in realirt the Penitus Occultis will be fighting the Thalmor in secret all the time, they're spies it's what they do. Any appearance of alliance between the Thalmor and the Empire is fake.

Delegations? By which do you mean official ambassadors? Because we see both uniformed Thalmor and Thalmor informers when you're escorting Esbern out of Riften.

As I said in the other thread: I like the Nords. They may not be as civil in outsiders eyes, but I can't really see how they are as barbaric as they have been described before. Then again I am Norwegian and we learn in school that the Vikings weren't as barbaric as they have been described either.

Back in Morrowind I use to play a Nord as my main character. I liked the fact that they were hard, warrior people. Oblivion changed my opinon of them because a good number of the Nords were depicted as really stupid. I couldn't stand that sterotype, so I switched to an Imperial, who seemed more likely to be cunning when compared with the people of his race.

I think you're insulting Vikings, I know most of them were farmers, whereas Nords don't have this excuse, whoever struck first doesn't matter, they're still part to blame for what Snow Elves became.

I'm not sure about what you mean by that, mainly because I didn't intend to continue the Falmer/Nord discussion, so exactly how am I insulting my ancestors?

You're comparing them to group of people who aren't good representation of Norse. Maybe American Norse, but real Norse were diverse societies and great cultures. I only wish knew more about Norse God/Goddesses.

I used it to point out that much like the real world vikings the nords are simplified by "outsiders", just like every other culture.

The Norse still conquered territory and were heavy in the slave trade. They just weren't as successful at empire building as the Nords in Tamriel, in part because of infighting and in part the little Ice Age that crippled Icelandic civilization and further expansion.

Oh, and they also didn't have a giant robot.
