Your favorite game genre

There are many styles of games, everything from shooting aliens to creating and living in a world of your design. The question is, what gives you the most enjoyment? Where do you fit in most comfortably, is it casually chain sawing an alien in twain while laughing manically or slowly building an empire to rule the world? Somewhere in between maybe?

Other.

I like games with are action-oriented but have RPG elements and/or are story/character driven.

I'm very picky about games I like.

RPGs. JRPGs specifically, though there have been a handful of Western RPGs over the years that I've taken a shine to, mostly from BioWare. Action-Adventure is second.

JRPG:
Final Fantasy IX
WRPG: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Action-Adventure: Okami
FPS: BioShock
TPS: Uncharted 2
Strategy: Valkyria Chronicles

For just general putzing around, it's all about a quick puzzle game on my phone.

When I'm looking for something more involved, I'll look to RPGs first, then to Adventure (typically minus the action part), then to Strategy (typically minus the real-time)

Videogame genres are so ill defined - especially on a game to game basis - that I couldn't possibly give you my favourite.

Broadly speaking my favourite genre is RPG, but my favourite RPGs have lots of action/adventure features (TES, the new Fallouts, Fable, Mass Effect) and my favourite action adventure games have RPG elements (Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect 2, GTA)

It depends.

If I'm playing alone, then RPG's (Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fable, etc.), sandbox games (GTA IV, Saints Row II, RDR etc.) and simulation games (Sims).

If I'm with friends, then I play sports games (FIFA 11, NBA 2K11 etc.) and fighting games (Mortal Kombat, Tekken etc.)

This!

I don't really like "pure RPGs" but find straight shooters/action games restrictive. I enjoy games that combine elements of the two.

Your favorite game genre...

Puzzle - Myst series, #1 by a slight margin

In puzzle games, like Myst, I spend many hours outside of the game working over my notes. Myst depicted a fairly consistent & somewhat viable alternate reality that spawned many dedicated forums for in-depth discussion, which is fun and interesting, too. I very much enjoy the challenging intellectual exercise, even when it leaves me feeling like Charlie Gordon at the end of his tale.

...along with your favorite game of each genre

RPG - TES series
Shooter - ?
RTS - Age of Empires
Action/Adventure - Fallout3 (arguable, yes, but that's how I played it)
Simulation - Sim City Series
Sports - ?

I hate PC responses (then again these kind of topics I shouldn't be responding to anyways), but.. I have no favourite genre. I have favourite games which span just about every genre. Can't pick one.

RPG is my favorite genre, mostly because of Morrowind and KotOR 1&2.

I generally don't like FPS's but Quake 3 is one of my favorite games, I like racing games too (Midtown Madness 2, Need for Pursuit... that kind of arcade racing games). Strategy games like Civ IV are fun, too, even though I svck at this kind of games.

As for adventure games, like Monkey Island, they can be a lot of fun when you play with friends (not multiplayer, obviously, I mean you all sit in front of the same screen and try to figure out what to do next together).

Only genre I'm completely indifferent to is sport games.

Same here, although I myself don't play simulation games and I still play Fifa by myself

Off topic: I was just thinking though, I just can't play deep games like RPGs with other people, I can still play GTA and just mess around and go on a rampage with friends though, but if I'm trying to play Mass Effect or something with a proper story I have to be focused on that, and only that :P

I'm a big fan of RPG's and sandbox games. Even if I have friends over, we just take turns dikeing around in Saints Row 2 (best game for dikeing around. Ever.). No multiplayer, except Mortal Kombat, occasionally.
RPG- Sacred 2: Fallen Angel
Shooter- err... Halo? Bah, never mind I don't like shooters.
Action/Adventure- Don't play 'em.
Simulation- Don't play those either.
Sports- :yuck:

You missed out 'racing/driving' games in your poll.

I played mainly racing games for years but now I'm mature, I prefer more exciting adventure and story based games and the odd shooter... presuming it has a good story and single player campaign.

Wow, that's hard to choose. A bit of everything.

RPG: Fallout/The Elder Scrolls/The Witcher series
FPS: (old) Call of Duty/Battlefield/Medal of Honour/Crysis/STALKER/Metro etc. series
Strat: Total War series
Sim: Flight Simulator/Silent Hunter series
Racing: F1/SBK series

It looks like FPS is winning, but compared to other genres, I don't put much more time into it.

Its a very tough pick between RPG and Action Adventure, but I prefer the latter. I absolutely LOVE seeing creative lands, dungeons. Stories that keep me hooked. Characters I can fall in love with, and both of these pull this off. My first thought was they both sort of blend in together, but then I thought.

If someone ask me if I would rather play the newest edition to the Elder Scrolls series, or Zelda series, chances are I would choose Zelda. See, its a very hard choice isn't it? In the end, I choose the one I knew the longest.

JRPG:
Golden Sun 1
WRPG: Morrowind
Action-Adventure: Zelda:Ocarina of Time
FPS: I honestly hate this genre the more I think about it.
TPS: Ratchet and Clank, though Max Payne comes close.
Strategy: Battle for Middle Earth 2, Rise of the Witch King
Shoot 'Em Up: Erm...

JRPG: Panzer Dragoon Saga
CRPG: Morrowind
Adventure: Shenmue
Fighting: Virtua Fighter 5
TPS: Panzer Dragoon Orta
FPS: Quake III or Unreal 2004.
Platformer: Sonic CD
RTS: Starcraft II or Starcraft: Broodwar.
TBS: Master of Orion II
Racing: F-Zero GX
Simulation (Extremely broad genre :P ): X2: The Threat.
Sports: Top Spin 3
Music: Space Channel 5
Talkin'-to-a-fish: Seaman
Puzzle: ChuChu Rocket!

Enough for now.

I like strategy, RPG, adventure, and fighting games all quite a bit.

Any genre that creates an immersive environment and really lets you become the PC. Most often, I find that RPGs really excel in doing this.
