Your source(s) for gaming news?

Post » Sun Aug 28, 2011 5:08 am

Just curious where folks are going for their general gaming news these days. There was a thread like this a while back but as I recall it was mostly about reviews. Bonus question! Are you satisfied with their (any site in particular) coverage?

Edit- Added a poll. Included most of the major ones that I'm aware of.

Gamerevolution. Well written reviews, up to date articles and news, and Haiku friday (a haiku contest every friday to win stuff).

I'm not really on the bleeding edge of information when it comes to video games, I just gather my information from the official websites of the developers who are producing the games I'm currently interested in and maybe a wiki if I feel there is a lack of information on the official page.

I also have a subscription to Gameinformer, and I use metacritic to help me judge whether or not I should get a game.

I use to use Gamespot for all my gaming needs. Now I don't hardly bother with them anymore since they basically look like another gaming site now. I forget the name, but they were the ones who got the Oblivion and Skyrim Exlcusives in January.

What was that site called? I find them to be good for news now, just rememeber the name. I have a CRS so when I redid my laptop, I forgot my favorites, and now forget who they were and now I have no more gaming news for me. :sadvaultboy:

Kotaku
Siliconera

I've used Kotaku almost exclusively for the past few years as I thought their coverage and community was top notch, but I don't feel like I can say that anymore. They seem to have a few areas in particular that they cover well, and miss a ton of stories elsewhere. I'm aware that it's a blog and was usually a fan of the cooky posts until I started seeing more articles about Japanese pop culture/politics than I do Japanese games.

Siliconera has filled that void though. Pretty much all the Japanese games coverage you could ask for without the god-awful community that Kotaku seems to have now.

I read GameInformer daily. The only games I'm that worried about news from are the ones developed by BGS, so this site is where I get the most important information. GameInformer has enough info for me on other games. I prefer not to know a lot of info on upcoming games anyway. I prefer to be surprised.

I used to be on Gamespot pretty heavily, but post 2007 Gamespot is much worse than pre 2007. If they still had Kasavin, Nevarro, and Gerstmann it'd be much better. I just can't take VanOrd's reviews.

Giant Bomb is nice, and I like Gerstmann's reviews, but it doesn't have as much of a following as Gamespot.

I do watch the Daily Fix (or whatever) from IGN. Although that could have something to do with that Naomi chick. :/

I use these forums. A paid journalist is no match in quality for a bunch of American teenagers.

That sounds like sarcasm, and yet, here we are.

Rock Paper Shotgun and PC Gamer. All focused on PC, and often with some nice news on smaller indie games and game mods too.

I have PlanetXbox360 and xplay on my Twitter feed, so I mostly get the up-to-the-minute news from them. I subscribe to 360 Gamer, so get the more in-depth reviews from there, and then if there's something interesting elsewhere I'll normally pick it up from gaming friends on Twitter and Facebook.

Game Informer (both the magazine and the website)
PlayStation: The Official Magazine
GamesRadar
IGN

Occasionally I'll spot a magazine with an interesting cover story, like PC Gamer or GamePro, and buy it on impulse but I'm trying not to do that.

Actually, right here in the Community Discussion forum. Someone usually posts about any games that look good and other times I just ask here when I'm getting bored with the ones I currently have. After that I do a google search on them for reviews and descriptions, then I go to YouTube and watch several videos and can usually judge from those which ones I want.

Skyrim will be the first game in a long time that I buy on day one.
