You should have some scrolls in your characters inventory after they agree to help him.

Equip the scroll he gives you and use it on skeletons or draugrs three times. Easiest way to do this is to test them out on skeletons inside hall of dead in Whiterun.

FYI: you don't have to use 3 of them just on 3 targets. Also, don't use them around quest-bound 'followers' (like the random quest-givers) because they'll go 'red dot' on you if they get caught in the AoE. :P

I wasn't that happy with him as a follower anyhow. But the scrolls were pretty effective, assuming you took the precaution of wearing fire-proof kit. I had fun firing them up and then working on my block skill.

However, if you are on a PC you could use the console to re-set the quest and start over. From UESP:

it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest MGRAppJzargo01. (Clear in this case means "remove")

But I'm guessing from the long list of numbers an brand names in you sig, that you are playing on some sort of console. In which case, you are SOL.

Really? :o I don't use followers, but it seems most people think he's one of the best Mage followers (Marcurio also gets a lot of 'votes').

idk, J'zargo worked really well with the Dunmer Mage I'm running right now. He's a fan of the big BOOM spells, and having him work with you on a room full of Draugr will get... pyrotechnicaly impressive. ;)

Yeah, I had the female DB initiate with me, and she stuck to me like chewing gum in the hair. Between those flaming scrolls and the proc from Dawnblade, she had enough pretty quickly and started attacking me, lol!

Also, returning to J'zargo with the report was one of the more amusing moments in the game. He's surprised to see you, though he tries to disguise it. Also, when you ask if the scrolls were supposed to explode, there's just the slightest hesitation on his part when he says, "no," as if to suggest that clearly the explosions weren't strong enough. Well, he did tell you he was competitive, didn't he?

 I've never chosen the, "If I didn't know any better..." dialogue option, but it would be interesting to hear his repose. :P

J'zargo is my favorite of the followers. If you choose the 'If I didn't know any better..." he tells you that many experiments are dangerous, but that doesn't stop him, even if he hurts himself.

As a follower, he's a great ranged mage, especially with follower fix mods. The entertaining side is when he goes into melee bare handed and tries to knock out everyone and everything.... and you know what? Sometimes he does!
