Zenimax mmo

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:13 am

In full production since early 2007 with over 100 people, tens of millions of dollars invested, customer service centers being opened in Irelland probably TES related and almost zero interest from TES fans:)

Anyone else find this strange? We had people virtually living in the TES 5 speculation thread for a number of years, yet Zenimax Online has been working on something since 2006 and no-one seems to care.

Zenimax/Bethesda being tight lipped about it couldn't be the same buzz creating strategy that worked well with Skyrim, they could be tight lipped or simply no-one is bothering to ask about it.

Todd Howard did say that he doesn't care much for multiplayers of any type, so he likes to keep the single player experience.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/bethesdas-todd-howard-not-interested-in-an-elder-scrolls-mmo/ is one of the articles talking about it.

As for the MMO, I have no idea what it may be

Does sound interesting though!

We may be seeing Matt Frior's take on the TES universe. Todd doesn't own it, Zenimax Media does.

Huh, I never knew that!

In that case, someone with a different view on the TES universe would be very interesting.

You don't think it may be a Fallout MMO, by chance?

so no more talk about it.

Yep

Anyway, back on topic: Do you think the MMO could be a WoW or GW type game?

Asking me? I don't play mmo's. Just curious as to the complete lack of interest :)

That is interesting, to say the least.

Maybe some people just do not connect the dots when it comes to Zenimax and Bethesda?

Big budget mmo and no word from Zenimax could imply TES relation. I couldn't see the tight lipped strategy working with completely new IP.

Edit: If it weren't for Mallyx, no-one would've even bothered replying to this thread. Not even an indignant "I don't play MMO's". Zenimax may have a bomb in production.

Mostly everyone on these forums is here because they enjoy TES games as single player games. Also mostly everyone on these forums don't like MMOs.

It's just not the right crowd.

I just think the word really hasn't gotten around that much, this is the first I've heard of it. :/ Also assuming it is TES related, it would be stupid for Zenimax to hype up two games in the same universe. Maybe we will hear more after Skyrim comes out?

If it is a TES MMO, I can't see it following the traditional 'theme park' setup, with level specific zones/quest hubs/dungeons/raids/loot/etc, and working out all too well. Unless it's based on some alternate time-line where multiple people can walk around all wearing Saviour's Hides and wielding Goldbrands and what not as well as them choosing not to pursue the typical TES sandbox style.

However, I could see it working as either a pure sandbox MMO (though sandbox MMO's are kind of a niche market) or a "Sandpark"/"Themebox" hybrid. Perhaps something like Darkfall Online but more... well done.

Personally, I'm not too interested. I played my share of MMO's with EQ and DAoC and a little bit of WoW, then I just kind of fell out of it. I much prefer the single player experience, with some light co-op/multi-player every now and then.

Agreed

I am an ex-MMO player and I love single player RPGs, just wish there were more of them :sadvaultboy:

I am assuming that it is a TES MMO and that they are waiting for the marketing for Skyrim to complete before releasing any information in order to avoid market saturation conflicts.

Also, I should point out that there are really only two large groups here (with a spattering of smaller ones):
1. Old Bethesda Fans - This group largely prefers the classic single player experience and therefore is not interested in the MMO.

2. New Bethesda Fans - This group is primarily young people whose attention usually does not extend beyond 2-3 months of release dates. They will be the ones going berzerk when the MMO's release is imminent, but it has not even blipped on their radar yet which explains the silence.

That's why you don't see interest in a TES MMO from TES fans.

That picture pisses me off more than I can say. Whichever biased, uninformed [censored] made it has obviously never played an MMO (outside of maybe RunEscape).

And considering the playerbase that Oblivion and now Skyrim have drawn to TES, it is probably going to be a pretty accurate representation.

Any reputable MMO has safeguards in place to prevent or discourage most of such behavior. You're going to get stupidity and childishness, sure, but those are pretty easy to avoid, especially in games with a more niche audience (i.e. not WoW).

Besides, who talks in "l1eet" in 2011?

While safeguards do exist, they are not actively enforced as that would take far too many manpower hours. The onus is on the playerbase to report such behavior and unfortunately, most people find the 3-5 seconds it takes to file a report to be too much of a hassle.

I do agree that niche games have better communities (that's why I joined this forum, after all), but TES has grown very quickly over the past decade to the point where an MMO would probably be a very popular and mainstream affair.

Well, I was referring mostly to the mechanical ones, like not allowing numbers/symbols in names so you don't end up with -=l33t h4xxx0rz =- as a character name. Or the ignore button and the channel filter. Dono about other MMOs, but LotRO actively polices names and makes you change them if they are totally out of character.

Pretty much the same reason why so many people here, myself included, would have loved a KotOR 3, but don't give a rat's ass about TOR.

I loved KOTOR 1 & 2 (yes, even 2) enough to give TOR a try. I'm just really hoping I don't regret it.

One thing that was annoying in WoW was the inability to put a space in a name, is it the same with other MMOs, like LotRO?

Some MMOs allow it, others ban it, and a few require it.
Not sure on LotRO.
