2012 Academy Awards Discussion

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 10:59 pm

I've done this on other forums and it's gotten some positive buzz but I feel like it could do even better here given the size of the forums (plus you're all such wonderful people!), so I thought I would make a thread here (I hope it's allowed!). First, I'm going to do nominations. Pick, at most, three picks for each category (you don't have to put in a nomination for each category if you don't want to), I think I'll collect all of the nominations and make a poll in Google Docs or something at the end of January or the beginning of February. Also, feel free to debate the films chosen by your wonderfully handsome/beautiful peers. The categories are as follows:

Best Movie
Best Director*
Best Actor*
Best Actress*
Best Supporting Actor*
Best Supporting Actress*
Best Screenplay
Best Visual Effects
Best Animated Movie
Best Blockbuster
Best Comedy
Best Music (can be a score or soundtrack)
Most Surprising
Most Disappointing
Most Overrated
Most Overlooked
Worst Movie
Most Anticipated Movie of 2012

*Please include the name of the film the actor/actress performed in along with his/her name.

Iron sky you will be hoping, its been in production for a long time, they were asking people for money to keep it funded, it went from Europe where it was being made to Australia, and havent heard much of it for along time.

I guess I haven't watched alot of new movies this year, afterall I only saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Horrible Bosses in theatre and didn't find too many movies that I felt required a rental or purchase but I guess I would have to 2nd Horrible Bosses as Best Comedy. It had a lot of moments that were truly hilarious and I felt that the casting was fanstastic. One scene that really got me excited and into the movie was ( I can't remember which scene it was) either the car chase or the hit planning scene where they used that excellent song " How do you like me now" by The Heavy, aka the same song used in the Las Vegas Kia Super Bowl commericial . The song and scene gave that reckless, crazy adventure feel, much in the way the first Hangover movie used " Joker and the Thief". I also saw a trailer for a game that used the same song by The Heavy and I really enjoyed it. All the performances in Horrible Bosses were great, Jennifer Aniston was super sixy, Kevin Spacey always excellent as a crazed ( but still relatively subtle psychopath), Colin Farrel as a the cokehead batchelor, and of course the pairing of the 3 friends. It evoked a similar feel as the first Hangover ( a movie which I considered the best comedy of that year). I guess movies that use a group of actors as a group of friends tend to stike a chord with me...

Most Overrated: Tree Of Life
I thought The Tree of Life was simply a masterpiece, although I suppose it could be considered boring by you . . . commoners.

Can't think of winners for all them, so here are a few:

Best Visual Effects - Hugo
Best Animated Movie - Either Rango or Tintin, I can't decide
Worst Movie - Alvin and the Chipmunks - Chipwrecked
Most Anticipated Movie of 2012 - The Dark Knight Rises

svcker Punch, Attack the Block and Harry Potter are probably in there somewhere. I have no idea which the best movie is. 2011 wasn't great for films, looking back.

Best movie: Melancholia
Best director: Lars von Trier (Melancholia)

Was a slow new-movie-year for me, missed alot of new potentially good releases (although, I'd probably still would've picked Melancholia and von Trier). The new planet of the apes flick was quite wathcable, though.

Melancholia was a beautiful film with some gorgeous imagery and fantastic performances by Kirsten Dunst and Charlette Gainsbourg. They'll probably both be ignored by AMPAS (Dunst has a small chance) which is a damn shame.

I find it difficult to pick worst movies because I try to avoid the ones that look terrible like Jack and Jill or I am Number 4. Then the Green Lantern side swiped me.

I need to watch that movie again. And the smoking is one of the reasons I think Rango was actually meant for advlts . . . you know, aside from the jokes about lisbians and rectal exams and whatnot.

I'm getting so tired of hearing about the Artist, I just hope once the oscars are over people here will finally move on and stop talking about it. Bérénice Bejo is great, though, I'd like to see her win if it meant she'd be cast in more movies.
