About the Witcher and Skyrim

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 4:57 pm

I know that the Witcher 2's assets are allowed to be used freely in games due to the kind nature of CD Projeckt, but I was curious if those same rules apply to the Witcher 1 as well? I'm pretty handy at creating music, and I made a few nice custom medieval tunes out of some of the assets in Witcher 1, that would be nice additions to bards (potentially allowing for bands and stuff too), but I want to know if CD Projeckt gives the same freedom with the Witcher 1 as they do with the Witcher 2.

If anyone knows, please respond here! Thanks!

Wouldn't it make more sense to ask this in a witcher forum?

Yes they do. See InBleedingRapture's Witcher mod for dragon age origins, he has all the legalities laid out there.

EDIT- @Derari, Considering its taken well over a month for them to "validate" my account there, its much faster to come here.

Wait, are you saying people can put the textures, models etc. from the witcher in a mod for Skyrim?

No. That is illegal.

Uh, this has been going on for awhile...

@Oof, no its not.

CD Project Red has given free license to use their assets in any way as long as its not for profit.

Then what do they mean "The Witcher 2's assets are allowed to be used freely"?

The Witcher 2's assets are allowed to be used freely. Skyrim's assets are not. If you want to add something to Skyrim from another copyrighted work, you have to ask Bethesda's permission.

Yes, there are a lot of mods that are, technically, illegal.

See above. Mods have locked threads that discuss porting Witcher 2 assets to Skyrim.

No one was talking about distributing skyrim's assets. He was asking if it was legal to make witcher mods for skyrim, which it is, the OP was asking if they licensed the assets from the first game as well, which they do. No one was talking about skyrim's assets.

Why don't we ask a mod to clear this up for us?

Note: Bethesda doesn't seem to care what you do for yourself. Uploading "Witcher 2-to-Skyrim" mods onto the Nexus or something similar may get you in trouble...

Has anyone got a link to the actual statement from CDproject that permission is given to use their assets in other games? I've seen the claim in a lot of games, but never seen an actual source from the company itself.

Bethesda don't allow it because its a minefield. If one company gave permission thats fine, but suppose someone isn't aware of that and modded in assets from other games for which permission IS NOT given?

This is the minimum that Bethesda would require to allow Witcher 2 assets to be modded into Skyrim, I was told.

I have heard that it is allowed from several different places but I have not seen an official source yet. I assume it's true, but if someone has a link to the statement from CD Projekt that would be nice. I'll discuss it with the other moderators.

I do know that the STALKER devs allow modders to use their resources for non commercial ends, Mart's Mutant Mod has a couple of STALKER creatures in it.

considering my thread discussing the Triss armor in skyrim thread is still open to this day, I would assume the other threads were locked because they discussed how to port assets, which is a no-no on these forums as it can be used illegally very easily.

?

That doesn't make any sense.

Apparently the mods aren't much clearer on this than we are.

In another thread (which was locked), I was told that
  • we are not allowed to discuss porting assets from one game to another because
  • there was no proof that CDProject had actually given permission and
  • Bethesda had not yet officially given permission.

I have posted the question up on their official facebook page, I will update this post with a reply and a link when they do reply.

Interesting. Anxiously awaiting their reply.

Say they do allow assets to be ported, I haven't played Witcher 2 yet, but is there some interesting items/armour/weaponry/etc.? Or would it feel out-of-place in Skyrim?

I wasn't aware that the witcher forum is that "protected". In this case, I apologize for my comment.

Some people make it seem as if we needed Bethesdas permission to port stuff to Skyrim. I think the mods just want to be careful and lock similar topics to prevent any suggestions of taking Skyrim assets for other games or using assets of games that are not as open as Witcher.

TheXenophobe: Hello, I was directed here from the CD Projekt facebook page, and there is some dispute on many gaming forums on the legality of using the Witcher assets in mods, would you mind commenting on the matter? (I'm a huge fan btw, TW2 was my GOTY)

The Witcher: Could you tell us what fora do you have in mind? We would read the threads and then we can give you an answer.

(A link to this thread has been provided, as of yet they haven't responded.)
