Activating US physical copy in Europe.

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 11:08 am

I'm asking steam support my, probably final, question before I cancel the pre-order from US.

"You stated that "Purchases made directly through Steam are not restricted by territory." Does that mean a person from USA can gift me Skyrim through steam, and I'll be able to download, play it, and be able to update the game in Lithuania?"

Eps, I actually meant "Does that mean a person from the US could buy me Skyrim THROUGH STEAM, and I could download and play it normally in Lithuania?".
It's possible, but risky, as it requires some tampering with Steam's files. You could lose your account because of it.

God! They can't answer a single question. I just need an yes or no answer and that's it. All I'm asking them if this is what they said or not, because I didn't understand well and I wanted to rephrase it and ask them if it's what they meant.
What the hell is their probmem?
I'm not asking any more than they told me.
They could at least say "No, we did not mean that, we meant "..." and we can't help you on what you thought we meant." i I got it wrong.

Then should I cancel my physical pre-order, and then just... GET IT FREE? ;'(((((((((((((
I remembered I still have yet to receive a message from Bethesda.
I'll just cancel the pre-order and when/if I receive the reply from Bethesda I'll see if I should pre-order again.

Cancel the pre-order, yes. But then try something local like http://www.gamecard.lt/. Only if that doesn't work will we be forced to hoist anchor :pirate: . Hey, it's not like it's our fault.

Yes you can. They have a money-back guarantee in case the key doesn't work. So yeah, I'll give them a try.

Damn, that is bad that you're not allowed to play Skyrim.

What you could do is find a REALLY cheap game that is blocked in your country and buy that from the US/Europe and see if it works, there are loads of super cheap games on steam.

It's a shame that you might not be able to buy this game, but at least you can get it if Steam fails you (Captain Blackbeard will get some copies into his stock).

Well I'm pretty sure it can be different with every game. I'm not gonna purchase a game just to find out if another game would work. This is just too ridiculous.
I'll just wait for a reply, and if I find out I can't play it, then Bethesda will lose $60 from me.
And yeah, I'll have to get it from Johnny Depp if I can't play it.

Thanks for the idea.

I guess that thinking that this game would be worldwide was a mistake, hearing about Lukas's problems with getting this game is just dire.

+! reason for why Steam = Steaming pile of doggie doo.

It's possible, but risky, as it requires some tampering with Steam's files. You could lose your account because of it.

I would just like to clarify this:

- Buying directly through steam using a different region is definitely not allowed and will get your account banned
- No one that I know of has been banned from buying a game through steam via their own region, and using a proxy to unlock earlier release dates (done this myself to get some games unlocked early)
- Steam cannot police where you can buy retail copies and keys from. If you buy a retail box from the USA and activate it in Europe, this is not against Steams EULA because you didnt pay for the game through Steam.

The problem for the OP is that Steam flat out do not sell this game in his region. However buying a retail copy and activating the key on steam wont get his account banned.

I understand that if someone would gift me Skyrim from US it will not get my account banned, but there could be other problems like Skyrim not showing up in my game library.
I have no idea what will happen if someone gift me Skyrim from the US through steam because steam "support" won't tell me.

If I receive a gift of Skyrim from US, what would happen? I mean, I also have the option of getting it through Steam as a gift from a friend in US.
I've never received a gift of a game that isn't available in my country, and I just fear that the money will go into oblivion, or some [censored] will prevent me from playing it.

Not much help though. It seems like they're allowed or not allowed to play different games randomly.

I live in Europe, Lithuania, and Skyrim doesn't show up in the steam store and I can't buy it, which means it's blocked in Lithuania.
Lets say I were to fly to US, purchase a physical copy of Skyrim, fly back to Lithuania, and activate the physical copy, purchased in US, on steam.
Would I be able to play Skyrim?

Also, what if someone, from US, gifted me a digital copy of Skyrim?

I already have Skyrim pre-ordered from US.
I waited for Skyrim for years, and I don't want to end up not being able to play it at all, while I have the physical and original copy of Skyrim in my hands.

This is about PC version.

EDIT: Just purchased Skyrim using TF2 items on steam. I will post what happens on 11/11/11.
Excited.
