All DLC's such big departures from the original game...

Post » Tue Dec 25, 2012 11:02 am

I understand I am one of the very very few who don't like this but I think that in the Skyrim atmosphere, the 2 big DLC's: Dawnguard and Dragonborn both look super high fantasy and don't fit all too well with the game. I personally disabled Dawnguard because it really made no sense in a Skyrim setting...

Am I the only one who wishes they had DLC's that fit into Skyrim better?

Huh? Skyrim is high-fantasy and both DG and DB are on its level.

Though Skyrim uses a much savage form of High fantasy...Taking inspiration from Howards Conan and ASOIF.

If you think Dawnguard and Dragonborn constitute any "higher" fantasy than Skyrim, you need to go play WoW, Everquest, and perhaps Dragon Age to get a better idea of what "high" fantasy really is :P

Technically Dragon age would be considered Dark fantasy...

Dragon Age actually fits well into the category of Dark Fantasy. It may be light compared to most but it's still Dark Fantasty.

I was referring to the over-the-top art style (yo pauldrons gotta be THIS big to be in Dragon Age :P ) and such more than anything else. But anyways, you git my point :P . Skyrim is "low-high" fantasy or "mid" fantasy, to invent a term.

People like variety, if the DLC was just more of the same it wouldn't be appealing to anyone.

Also, I thought Dawnguard fit. TES has vampires, it seems logical to me. If wizards and dragons are less "high fantasy" then vampires are then I don't know what game you're playing.

Yeah, there is no straight line between high fantasy and dark fantasy. Fans generally like elements of both and as such, they are blurring together to appeal to the demographics of people who like fantasy in general, between the ages of 13-35.

It is not one or the other, it is varying degrees of each.

When Skyrim first came out, people were complaining that the world was too realistic, now people are complaining that the dlcs have too much fantasy?

To quote Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation

"Dragon Age: Origins is dark in the same way that a nerd is dark by getting his ear peirced to try and impress the goth chick who works in Starbucks."

It starts dark... but in Origins, you can easily reverse the trend. There are clear "good" and "bad" options in 90% of the cases. DA2, for all it's faults... makes he choices much harder since each choice has equally bad consequences. And even if you choose what seems to be a "good" choice... whoops. It's not so good after all!

Dark Fantasy is very hard to define but mostly it has a morally ambiguous protagonist with a gloomy overtone.....That is DA:O all over. I don't know what game you are playing. There aren't any clear choices and DA2's choices were predictable and a horrible story to boot. WTF are you playing? I'm mean I'm literally baffled by that comment. [censored] baffled.

And a nerd piercing his ear trying to impress a goth chick is a lot darker then you think...

I have played DA:O and honestly, its not that dark :P . Moral right and wrong are still quite defined. Your protagonists are NOT that morally ambiguous (you certainly are not if you don't choose to be). And the world isn't that gloomy really. Plenty of white knights and great evils there. The Witcher 2, I think, would be more "dark" in the since of moral ambiguity in protagonist and world.

Is this the same person who asked for a mod/way to get rid of all that silly fantasy stuff like Spriggans, giant spiders, and giants- only leaving Mammoths, Sabretooth tigers? I remember that post... Made my day

Compared to the rest of of the series, the DLC's are right on par.
