He almost fell off the cliff!

So in the trailer where our hero approaches the canyon, he appears to catch his balance as he nears the canyon.... Is this function tied in with skills? Discuss! Awsome idea...

As long as its not an invisible wall. I'll be happy.
I guess it could be a useful perk.

And if you don't have that perk, you fall to your death :P

Well, considering that there will be less skills, I't seems quite improbable, but who knows, mybe its related to (atletics if it's present in game).

Well that's the thing, alot of people think to get something done in the game you have to have a skill. It could easily be a perk. There is no need to go Daggerfall way and add in worthless 95% of the time skills like Impish or centaurion. I'd knock myself out if I saw a "No falling off cliff" skill <_<

But yeah, if that really is an in game mechanic, it could easily be an athletics perk, which is what makes the new game so amazing, so much more customization than just slopping skills into the game.

That was in a movie though, it wasnt actual game play.

But.... What if you're trying to jump off the cliff? Say onto a ledge or something?

That entire trailer was filmed in game on the 360 version. There is a chance that the almost falling off the cliff or the screen shaking as he ran through the forest was just machinama but I'm thinking the screen shaking was sprinting and the almost falling off the cliff is also a feature, mainly because Pete Hines tweeted that nothing in that video was scripted per se.

False. Confirmed multiple times by Bethesda to be actual in game gameplay.

My guess is this:

He was sprinting.

Whenever you transition from a sprint to a dead stop, he kind of slides to a halt and puts his arm out in front of him. I think this will happen wherever you are if you perform this action. It looked esp cool by the side of a cliff but I suspect you can sprint and then stop in the middle of the forest and his hand will come out to maintain balance.

I agree. I think the video just happens to capture the animation at a uniquely awesome moment, but that the animation was not particular to the fact that a cliff was there.

Maybe is a question of changing your momentum. I mean if you are running forward and try to stop or go backwards, maybe you will lost your balance. here a perk or a skill could reduce de effect.

What I was wondering is why the dragon didn't simply knock him off to his doom

Because then he would die and then there would be no story.

Because the pc had moved up / the dragon isn't strong enough to do it

This is really interesting speculation. The possibility of a perk being needed to stop forward momentum as opposed to the player having to remove his/her finger from the proper key/button. Then again if I was trained in real life with such a perk I would have avoided the door jamb this morning with my big toe.

I would venture to say that it is the animation you see everytime you stop sprinting. I think BGS just timed it to happen in front of the cliff just to make the trailer look cool. thoughts?

I hope we have momentum and that's what happens when we are sprinting and suddenly stop and press the back button.

I would love for the characters motions to actually feel realistic--with force behind them. Same with regular melee attacks as well, make it feel like you are actually moving your arms and putting force and energy behind every attack. I guess good animation, sound, and real physics would do that.

I'm hoping it happens when you all most fall of a ledge. Lots of games do this but i haven't seen it attempted in First Person yet. Go Beth!

I hope a perk isn't required to keep your balance whenever you stop sprinting. It would ruin the epicness of the main character if you sprint into a town, stop ... and fall flat on your face going, 'Crap, I didn't get that perk.'

I would not be at all surprised if it was like that. Not everything that's in the game will necessarily be a skill or perk.

Why not? It's not a match of strength or anything. Even if he weights 40 stones or something surely the dragon could easily pick him up.
