Android apps for smartphones

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 6:39 am

Who is this aimed at?I myself am using a Droid 2 using the stock firmware but Android 2.3.3 according to my phone information. I am thinking of switching to Cyanogen, but probably will not.
LG Ally running Rooted Android 2.2.2.

Biggest POS phone I've ever owned. It has absolutely no internal memory. Anything I download has to be SD compatible. But half the time it uses up phone memory just downloading stuff. It reboots for no apparent reason, freezes, uninstalls things by itself, deletes all of my contacts. I hate this phone. The only good thing about it is, that once my upgrade is due the iphone 5 should be out next fall so I'll be getting that.

I meant Tallest, to see why his phone is a POS.

I've got a wildfire s 2.3.5 myself. I had internal memory problems, but after the 2.3.1 -> 2.3.5 update I no longer have this problem.

I enjoy:

I always manage to surprise myself on how close I can get to 1GB.

http://www.stitcher.com/ - for podcasts. PS: my favorite podcast is The Vinyl Cafe - a good-humored whimsical interlude.

I especially like using DV to place my most-dialed contacts on a screen as a grid of photos. I've also seen DV paired quite effectively with http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=simi%20folder&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCYQFjAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fmarket.android.com%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dcom.th.android.widget.SiMiFolder%26hl%3Den&ei=K00DT7vaK-SsiALfz9m7Dg&usg=AFQjCNEPKnQWLAqgRWU_nBF5xgSxAyW54g&cad=rja for a slick interface.

Desktop visualiser looks awesome.

I don't think I've gotten any more updates on my phone since I've rooted it. I think it stopped getting the updates. I could try unrooting it then doing an update then rooting it again. But I've heard that once it updates it will automatically reinstall the bloatware and I'd have to uninstall everything again.

I should just go to Veri$on and see if they'll let me do a 7 month early upgrade....

Of course they'd let me upgrade; at full price.

It's what you get when you get a phone universally acclaimed to be very mediocre at the time of release, it's pretty much crap nowadays.

Anyway, install a custom rom on there if you want performance gains. You then may be able to overclock your phone and improve performance as well as slim down the install even further to free up internal space.

NinJump - A fun game

Gurk - An awesome RPG, which I highly recommend

Zombie Smasher - Another good game

Air Hockey Speed - An air hockey game... gets really hard (almost impossible) at level 21

Solo Lite - A virtual guitar

Sword and Arrow - A sword that you can swing around... makes sounds when you move your phone like a sword

Android Task Killer - Kills tasks, highly recommended with all the bloatware phones have these days

Android System Info - Info on your phone

File Manager - Nice to manage your files on your phone

U.S. Army Survival Guide - A nice read :D

Flashlight (by Devesh Parekh) - A simple flashlight without all the extra junk other flashlights have

RealCalc - A scientific calculator

I've thought about doing a custom ROM then I start researching it and then read how-tos then I start seeing everything you have to do then reading the horror stories of what happens if you do something wrong. And then I decide it's probably not worth bricking my phone, cause I will screw something up.

Anybody using a different keyboard?

When I had my Ally running Dolphin Mini I was using the GO Keyboard and it worked great. Now, with the Nexus I'm still using Dolphin but switched it up to HD and redownloaded the GO Keyboard but it doesn't like to auto-correct or auto-capitalize. I'm not sure if this is a browser issue or the keyboard app. I did try it on the stock browser and it was doing the same thing. Anybody know of a really good keyboard?

Dropbox - great way to work on files that auto sync with your laptop.
Bump - by simply bumping two phones together, you can share photos, contacts and other info.

I use Swype. I swipe over the keyboard going over the letters that make up the word in the order it is written, and the word comes up. It's pretty accurate. I've also added hundreds of Maltese words in the dictionary, one by one throughout the months.

I looked at swype but didn't download it. Maybe I will now.

*Edit.

Downloaded Swype and installed I dont like like it. It's only auto correcting when it's in Swype mode. And it's still not auto capitalizing "i". Im thinking it's a browser issue and not a keyboard issue. I had this same issue with Dolphin Mini and eventually it started working.

Weird. I use dolphin mini, right now in fact using Swype, and the I capitalises. Try swiping I and going upward.

Also, disable auto correct from the settings.

Imo this should be the standard way to type on a touchscreen. Much faster and less accuracy required.

I'm using Dolphin HD, it's the full browser.

I find swiping more difficult. I don't have the ability to think that fast. I'm thinking it's a browser issue amd not so much the keyboard because it's not auto correcting anything I type. I have to go back and reread everything and correct what is not correct.

I used Dolphin HD too a few months ago with Swype, didn't have any problems though. Dunno, not sure if it's a bug or it's just that you don't like it.

I think it's a bug. I've run into it before with my other phone, the problem is I don't remember how I fixed it with the other phone to see if I could duplicate the fix for this phone. Although, I haven't tried uninstalling Dolphin HD and then reinstalling it. Hold on, gonna go try that now.

*EDIT*

Tried uninstalling Dolphin HD and re-installing it, didn't work; maybe it'll work itself out in one of the Dolphin or GO Keyboard updates. In the meantime I'll just have to pay attention to what is being entered.

I don't get the need to auto-correct/complete. I don't use it, or use it as little as possible. Makes it to where I actually have to remember how to spell things.

But speaking of Android apps there is probably the king of all free Android apps: Angry Birds. And possibly Fruit Ninja.

Tried. I even went back to the stock keyboard for a day to see if it would auto-correct. No good. I seriously think it's got to do with Dolphin HD.

Any recommendations for an IM app for Android? I primarily need Google Talk. The problem with the default GTalk app is that it doesn't support multiple accounts (at least not until my phone gets ICS...) and I have two Google accounts I use for Talk, neither being the default one for my phone. I don't want one that's an app-ified version of a web client like Meebo. Something more akin to Pidgin is what I'd prefer.

There's EBuddy. But I don't know anything about it or use an IM software.

There's also NimBuzz that allows you to use GTalk as well as others programs. Again, I have no experience with either.

Both appear to want/require you create an account with them :blech:

Found https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beem.project.beem&hl=en which at least seems to cover my XMPP needs. Almost all the apps I've downloaded on my phone are open source apps, and the few that aren't are software I've been using for years (like Opera). Too many apps have stupid-insane permission requirements that makes me wonder why anyone would trust them.

Anyway Hopefully Beem meets my needs, shame there's not a good alternative to Pidgin, though.
