Anita Sarkeesian's "Tropes vs Women" Part 1

Post » Mon Mar 25, 2013 6:25 am

Well, this is about at post limit. I think it's been a good conversation thus far, but I'm asking the other moderators for input as to whether or not this threads has run it's course or whether we'll allow another one after this.

#snipped

Maybe the thread could go on the back burner and be revived when the next video is up as that will almost certainly prompt a new thread anyway? I'd like the discussion to continue at some point, but if it isn't to be then fair enough.

While it is a waste of his intelligence, he seems to have gained a personal liking of tearing down feminist arguments. Honestly I like it because some one needs to point out how ridiculous they are.

There are a lot of feminists out there that are perfectly fine people. Unfortunately, for some reason, pretty much the only ones that ever get this much (edit: favourable) attention are the Anita Sarkeesians. It's a problem. So I'm glad to see people rebut them.

I don't really think there's much else to be added. Posts have been waffling toward the end of the thread ... She's putting out other videos, though, and maybe people would want to talk about them when they come out. (I won't be the one to put up another thread like this.)

But when viewed as a whole, if it's used enough to become a trope, then that emerges as a symptom of underlying faults in our society.

These kinds of games are not made over and over because of sixism, but because of capitalism. Video game executives look at proposals and think, "which of these fit a formula that has proven to be successful?" Since these types of games have been successful in the past, they will continue to be made in the future, because most video game execs are too scared to innovate. If women want to change the industry, then they need to get off their asses and start making indie games that fit the paradigm that they want. I assure you, if one of those becomes a big hit, all the big "sixist" game companies will be falling all over themselves to copy it.

Agree'd. I dont have a problem with feminists in general. Just the ones that are absurd.

Which brings my criticism of Sarkeesian. What exacly is she trying to accomplish by telling us about things a good number of people already know? Is she trying to get the Video Game Industry to take a good look at themselves? Does she want Game devs to look at her video and change the Status Quo accordingly? Really while watching it, I couldn't help but say "Ok, and? What do you want done?".

What I find most interesting in this whole thread is that I assume - though I haven't checked all of your profiles - that the ones of you talking the most about this issue are men.

Personally, I'm a woman and no, I am not a feminist. I have never suffered anything aside from mild sixism in my entire life, I am not barred from any job or opportunity that I have thus tried to attain, and I think it's ridiculous to try and tag the entire videogame industry as "sixist". Out of my friends, both male and female, I am the only female I know that actively plays games. My male friends? All of them do. My point is that I may not know the actual statistics, but in my life, the ratio of men to women who play games is very much skewed. If that's the case across the board, it only makes sense to feed into a more male driven plot being the largest fan base are men.

I'm not offended by the lack of female roles in games, though I have passed up games when a female role isn't available. (Like The Witcher.) But that's my personal preference.

My point: She's being childish and silly and anyone who claims that all women have these views is wrong. I may not be the norm, but I am female and I find this whole subject annoying. It seems to me people have nothing better to do than make issue where there really is none.

EDIT: Oh, and the whole idea that the damsel in distress is strictly a male fantasy is also false. Feminist women may not agree, but most women (I'm speaking from my personal experience only) want the same silly fantasy. They want the man to come to their aid and then fall madly in love. The story is so successful because it appeals to both sixes.

Second Edit: And all of you talking about "feminist making games that appeal to women": What exactly would a game like that be based on? Suddenly the man needs rescuing and the woman is the hero? How does that positively effect the idea of skewed social standards?

Alright, well this thread's reached post limit. When she posts the next video, it might be time to revisit this discussion, but by now everyone's just about had their chance to have their say so it probably doesn't need a thread #2 at this point.
