[WIP] Another UI for Skyrim

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 8:42 pm

Hey folks,

I am no longer part of the SkyUI team due to differences. No this is not a plot on revenge, I am still in good standing with all members of SkyUI, this new UI will simply be taken a different direction than SkyUI. The new UI will include the base functionality of SkyUI and have a completely new look/feel to it. Instead of the current "futuristic/minimalist" style, I plan on making it look more like a modern fantasy Sword/Magic menu. If I get the design ready, I will probably release the first version in a few weeks once I stabilize the new core.

The new UI will be called NexUI

To make this happen, I am currently looking for the following to add to my team:

1. Flash/Photoshop Designers - to help with the new UI design/look/icons.
2. ActionScript programmers - to help me add/fix code.
3. Testers - to help find bugs=). Testers will be given access to early development builds as they are ready.

If you fall into one of these categories and feel you can assist, post in this thread or send me a PM.

NexUI WIP Features :
- 2 Themes : Standard Monochrome(default), Modern Fantasy(currently do not have designers for fantasy look yet)
- Standard functionality such as sort/filter items, ability to customize font sizes, switch icon styles etc..
- In-Game UI configuration. There will be a new menu that will allow users to change Easy/Advanced UI configuration options with Easy being the default. There will also be a detailed user guide(maybe in-game book as well?) explaining what each config option does and how to use it.
- Brand new icon set.
- Journal Book. A new option will be added to the journal menu to access your in-game journal. This journal will allow you to write out your game experience as they happen and save it with current game time/date.
- New Grid layout
- New menu designs(no spoilers just yet =) )
- more features to come...

If you have an idea/feature that you think is worth adding, please feel free to post it here.

Thanks,

Kratos

P.S. I am still looking for dedicated testers , PM me if interested

Looking forward to seeing your take on a UI mod. Variety is always good. As always, let us know if you need more from SKSE to do what you want to do.

Kratos,

I would be happy to test for you when you reach that point.

A request though please, something (hopefully) simple... I've asked before in previous SkyUI threads and been brushed off, told it was way down on the 'to-do' list, and when I finally got around to digging into it myself a bit (beyond my abilities) got a little feedback that it "Shouldn't be that difficult"... so here's my request, my findings and the response to it...

---- Initial post ---
Spoiler

This is a UI request for auto sorting/placing of Quests.

Can you please hit the Quest log screen with a sledgehammer and put quests in by faction!

I don't want to see a list of 100 'specific' quests and then the 'Misc' category with another 300 radiant quests... I'd like to see the list by faction if I have faction quests active (hmm.. completed the same way might be a good idea as well).

i.e. - Main (left side) listing
College of Winterhold
Companions
Main
Civil War
Miscellaneous

Please, please, please... Until some enterprising modder comes up with a 'Please continue, my good sir. and don't give me your stupid quest NPC scum!' mod to avoid having quests added just by walking by a freakin NPC 20 miles away (ok, I exaggerate, it's only 5 miles! ) ... the quest log/screen is a nightmare... :/

--- Digging & Response ---
Spoiler

Okay, so I'm a bit impatient. I started poking into the gfx files looking for the quest/journal stuff and found... quest_journal.gfx

Converted it to swf file and opened it up with trillix (v5.3.1370)... Searching through it, I _think_ I found the script changing the layout of the quest part of the journal... But at this point I need professional help here! ;p

The script in question is 'Script 620' - what I want to do is on the quest listings, have a 'headers' section of the quests by their faction and the actual quests listed under them (for current and completed quests)... not changing anything else...

So can I distract one of you UI guru's to take a look and see if I hit the right script and perchance tell me what I need to change/edit/add in there please?
(response)
Looking at QuestPage it shouldn't be too difficult . I suppose you'd filter based on TitleList.entryList[i].type, create new headers with text's set according to type, then under each type put those quests.. then you'd do the same for completed quests. I only glanced at it

I know it's not as 'important' as containers and whatnot working/looking smoother/better, but it's something that's used almost as much (or should if it didn't svck in organization) as those menus, imo.

What sort of look are you aiming for? I really don't like the minimalistic, transparent black&white look of Skyrim's interface. A more traditional fantasy look like Morrowind, Baldur's Gate or Diablo would be terrific.

Call me crazy, but I loved Dark Darnified UI for Oblivion. Still my favorite UI for any game ever.

I second Mynex and Sleepy Gecko's requests. :D The quest log is a disorganized mess and the transparent black makes the text hard to read. I've been using SkyUI, but the text is too small for my old eyes. I'm playing on a regular widescreen monitor too.

I might be able to help with the development too. I'll check into a few things and send you a pm if I think I can help.

This is actually what I am aiming for but I need a good PS designer to do it.

You can increase the text size by changing a few options in config. PM me for info on what to do.

My thoughts exactly. And am happy to hear that this aligns with Kratos45 thoughts as well.

SkyUI is a decided improvement on the base UI. But this maintains the first thing that I disliked about the UI:
It doesn't look like a "Sword and Magic" UI, it looks like a computer screen display, more suited for a futuristic, computer-heavy kind of game. Where it would be appropriate for the UI to look like you are looking at your portable computer device. In that scenario it would not be so immersion breaking.

I felt the same about the "advanced Google Maps" Map, again more suited for Sci-Fi than Fantasy.

If Bethesda had basically copied (and advanced perhaps) the Dark DarNifed UI, I would have been ecstatic I think.

Cochese already sent me a pm telling me how to do it, so I'm good for now, thanks. I'll continue to follow this and let you know if I can pitch in.

I'm decent enough with photoshop, horrible with Flash though. I do think you need to tell us a bit mroe of your plans. There is nothing in your post enticing me to help you out. No idea of a finished look you're aiming for. You say you want a more classic fantasy interface, good. Post more like that and you might find more people willing :)

A gridbased inventory (with using C for zooming e.g.) sounds very very nice... Did I mention very?

Where's the best place to learn ActionScript? And what do I need to compile it? Any freeware?

There are few ways you could do this, all of which have issues that mean making them a reality very impractical!
:: Have several 3D images (very technically challenging and extremely resource dependant)
:: Render icons for every item in the game (Extremely time consuming and would not easily support new added weapons)
:: Have generic icons for each weapon type (Not really any better because you'd have no easy way of telling what item was what without having to hover over each one)

So really, this isn't a possibility, unless you can think of a different way of doing it?

Same place as learning any other language, by reading books or looking at examples. Adobe Flash (Pro) 10 [CS4, that is]. No, programs like flashdevelop won't work because all the sources he's using are based on the decompiled sources from the swf's which are *.fla's. Unless some nice person rewrites the entire UI :P

£140 for the student edition. As far as I'm aware I can't sell anything made with a student license but can I freely distribute it?

Just an update on where I stand...I have all my item icons setup(fantasy style) but need help with category icon art for Inventory/Crafting/Magic menus. I managed to find some free fantasy art but I don't want to use portions for one menu and not have the same style for rest. I realized that I don't necessarily need a photoshop/flash file to create this art, you can simply send me an icon set in the format of a PNG or BMP and I can get it inserted into the UI. Thanks.

As long as you can get Flash that has AS support and is CS4 (Saving from CS5(.5) in compatibility doesn't work reliably enough to warrant using it, sadly) it should be fine!
I don't know the limitations of the student edition? I'm guessing it leaves out features that 90% of people don't use :P

Looking forwards to your UI, variation is needed and the minimalistic theme of SkyUI is getting boring

If you are still looking for testers I'm more then willing to help you out in any way I can.
