I had to put down my 14 year old black lab last year. She lived a long and happy life but it's still hard losing something that has been a part of my life for so long.

It's really hard to lose a pet that has been a part of your life for any time. I had a cat long ago, before the one that is pictured in my avatar. She lived a long and very malicious, cantankerous life. She was evil-tempered to the very end. And I could not believe how bereft I was when I came home and she was no longer slinking around, staring malevolently at me from high perches, throwing up food out of spite and so on. She was evil, but she was my cat for over 17 years and I missed her something fierce when she passed on.

It's been about 2 years possibly 3, but I had to put down my black lab I got from the shelter. Rescued her after waiting 6 months after my first dog died that I remembered growing up with me. Was hard to put her down since it happened on Christmas Eve and all. However, it was a choice that had to be made and it still hurts a bit thinking about it.

I've had to get two dogs put down, mine and my grandma's, both of which we had for over 10 years. To be honest, I don't really want another dog now.

My mom on the other hand lost her blind bird she's had forever. The poor bird was blind, and basically depended on my mom for everything, and my mom loved taking care of it. That was a particularly bad week, and I'm still not sure she'll ever be truly over it.

Let just say that thankfully our back yard isnt part of a stephen king novel, and whoever gets this house after weve all gone, i wouldnt dig anywhere, having pets die has become a normal part of life, we have another one that'll be gone soon.

The most recent was a german shepherd mix that passed away a couple of years ago. We had him since he was a puppy, since his mother had lived with us as well until she had to be put down.

One of the friendliest and most loyal dogs I've ever known, in the end he died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family.

We just had to put my cat of 10 years down.. she was so young and it came as a very big surprise. We thought she had a cold but it ended up she was in heart failure and didn't respond to medical intervention. :( That's the first pet I've ever had as my own and had to make the decision to put her to sleep.

I'm really dreading the day my dog passes... she's like my kid.

I found out last wednesday that the vet wanted to put my dog down, he had a tumor on his neck and couldn't eat or breath properly. I was hoping it would be something less serious like an infection because the vet gave us some antibiotics. By friday we had him put to sleep.

A few years back our Jack Russel Terrier was either stolen or ran away. A couple months after that our cat got out and never came back. It's still pretty depressing.

I'm sorry to hear that, OP. My first cat lived to the ripe old age of 19. The cat I have now I rescued from my neighbour, she was a real meanie and didn't feed or take care of it properly. It was only going to be a matter of time before the cat moved in our house. She's like my baby, I couldn't imagine things without her. My mum rang today and told me the cat had pooped on the carpet, and I couldn't help laughing.

Not recently, but it's never easy to lose a pet. From the Chihuahua I grew up with, to my Beta fish, to my ferret. I've never been good at people interaction, but my heart has an undying loving kindness for animals who aren't mean or hostile. To see an animal dead on the side of the road, let alone see a pet I loved near and dear, sinks my heart to depths that even my normal depression doesn't sink to.

We had to put down our family dog in early January. He has so many issues, Diabetes being the most prevalent. I actually remember posting a terrific picture of him here when we had an ongoing pet thread that I actually don't have anymore but i've had a lot of trouble tracking the thread down.

If anyone can help me find it, it would really mean a lot to not just me but my family.

Sounds like my mom's cat. she had no soul. if you tried to touch her she would scratch you. whenever my friends would come over they'd point at it and yell sacrifice and the cat would run away :P she recently had kittens as well and we kept one. that looks just like the momma cat. my mom never names the kittens. she named this one George.

I once had 3 rabbits. One was ill, the other got killed by a dog and the remaining one escaped into the nature.

I hear you man, pets have been apart of my family long before I was born. Since I was born we've had four cats, all aged 15, put-down as they got sick, our 16 year old dog; we have three toy-poodles now aged 4, 5, 7 and the days going to come when the worst happens, mother will be absolutely broken. They've always been seen as members of the family.

My grandparents dogs, who I grew up. They died when I was around 10. I remember crying as my dad put their blanket covered bodies into the ground and started shoveling. Their grave markers are still in the woods just outside the fence.

My current dog is only 6, so hopefully I won't be dealing with any deaths any time soon.

Put down our seventeen-year-old cat a few months ago. We had him since the day he was born, and we were friends ever since I was five. That was the toughest week (and then day) of my life. I don't normally cry, but I did at least twice a day during that awful wait for the vet visit. I'm past it now, of course, though I'll occasionally think I see him lying on the couch and remember he isn't here anymore, he's underground in our back yard. ... :(

I hope you find your dog. I havent lost any pets recently but I fully understand the worry and the hurt. I have 3 cats and they're a huge part of our family. I hate to think about the day when my cats pass.

Good luck with your search.

Last two pets I lost where my female Rottie/Weiner Dog mix (not to sure how that worked out) Maxi who died from old age, and my female Pug Keiko who we had to put down due to being ate up with cancer. I hated losing my pug cause you miss that woof and snorting that they do.
