Anyone keeping a Skyrim diary?

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 4:20 am

I did this for Morrowind for a while - made it the most amazing gaming experience ever (I got so deep into my character's head)! My writing skills also got a regular workout. The downside was that it was very time-consuming, and you couldn't just 'play' the game casually at all - everything had to be detail role-played, then paused, and documented.

I loved how your quest journal (log) from Morrowind was written from the perspective of your character. I hope that is how tracking quests in Skyrim is implemented.

Wasn't it similar in Oblivion? It always used 'I' in quest descriptions, not 'you'.

I actually did it for a bit in Fallout 3 but forgot about it. I might give it another go in Skyrim :).

I'm thinking it will be along the line of Cliff's Notes.... just jotting down where I go, what monsters I kill, items I pick up, etc. In bullet point format.

ex: 11/12/2011- Went to X cave. Killed X enemies. Picked up X, X, and X. Dies X amount of times.

etc.

If I do it would be in the form of my characters journal.

I'll be going with Nightbeat's http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1242490-hardcoe-role-play/ and getting a medieval-looking journal to take my notes, NPC sketches, document treasure findings, in character. I won't pause that frequently, only when something major happens, or to write reminders/ingredients lists. My character will kick back at the local tavern while I'm recording longer entries (story elements, Dovahkiin's personal thoughts, friendships, etc).

I'll most likely end up doing something similar to this for the beginning. Creating a list of certain things and then write a full-fledged journal using that list.

Now that I have the idea to make a journal in my mind I should definitely try making one for Fallout 3 and any future Fallout installments.

I've done that with MYST games. Partially out of necessity though, if you don't keep notes.. MYST's puzzles will be the end of you. :P

I have done the same (and being an huge Myst fan, I have to). I remember once trying to map the maze at the Selenic Age (or whatever it's name was. Haven't played the game for years).

I'm doing this for Oblivion and Morrowind thanks to mods. I wonder how the Skyrim Journal will be implemented this time.

Fun fact: Despite my character being female, I can't help but deepen my voice and proclaim out loud "Updated my journal" once I've finished my usual page long entry (anyone caught the reference?)

I'm thinking about trying to document everything I do in Skyrim. Sort of a journal documenting my adventures and what I do. I think mostly so once I am deep into the game I can go back and use it for reference purposes... like keeping track of characters, enemies, places etc. Anyone else doing this or is the idea totally nuts?
yo could probably publish and sell this diary

Yes lol, they're actually really hilarious. I've actually wrote a bit of stuff of my own after I read those but I doubt I'll post them. People reading my thoughts makes me nervous haha.

Someone PM'd and asked where I got mine so I'll post it here:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/home-gift-embossed-black-leather-journal-with-bead-tie/12602549?ean=9780641623219

I haven't written anything in it yet, once I start it I'll take pics and throw them in my sig. It would be cool if maybe once the game comes out we start a thread in the general discussion area and keep each other motivated :)

If anyone is looking around, I looked at Amazon but there's not a huge price difference in the ones they sell at Barnes and Noble, and it's nice to be able to walk in, feel the book and be able to walk out with it that day.

Cheers!

This is an awesome idea but frankly I don't have time for it.
Being the busy man I am,I'll probably just use the ingame journal.

I'm going all out with it. I'm making several mini books and video journals while I play skyrim.

I almost wish there was an ingame journal feature where you could write whatever you wanted...

I'm hoping Kyoma works his magic with another journal mod. I had a blast crafting a journal of my travels with interesting things I found, places, notes on common places and descriptions of various herbs, etc.

If not, I may keep one of my own accord.

Well, more than likely one of the first mods will be to fix that :)

I like the idea of having an external item though, making it a more personal journey for me, and it's like having tactile 'proof' of the journey we're about to embark. 5 years from now, when they announce the new TES game, I can pull it off the shelf and peruse my first adventure. Maybe long after playing I will come across it and it will encourage me to fire up the game again. Who knows :)

Twenty-seven dollars! Yowzers, too rich for my blood. The sad-sack journal I kept in Morrowind was scribbled into a cheapo, spiral-bound, College Rule, 80 sheet, 8"x5" cardboard thing made by internationally-renowned Top Flight company. I still have it here next to my computer. But I have to admit yours looks a whole lot better. ;)

I'm too cheap to buy a real journal, and my handwriting is horrible, so I just whipped up a Word doc to make it look like an old-time diary.

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m315/madampudifoot/journaltemplate.png

I used bookmarks for the different categories, so that once it starts getting longer, I can just jump down to where I want to jot important notes. I've never done anything like this before, but I think it'll be fun to take notes as I go, and struggle along without the hud. Might try to have my PC sleep 7 hours a night, and eat and sleep, just for the imurshuuuuun. :turned:
