Are mods really that good?

Mods are the main reason anyone plays TES games... Vanilla is just EMO.

(Just correcting your obvious type-o's) LOL.

Yep, haven't touched skyrim in a month, waiting on CK. Can't wait to see the look on Xboxer's faces when modders create actual dragons that fly out of your computer case and start ransacking Xbox gaming conventions.

Not really. Vanilla is white. Emos like black. ;)

also,

Don't forget you can use a controller with the PC version. If you want to play it on your large screen TV you can also just link a cable up from the computer to it, or there are also wireless adapters for £20 and so on.

I wouldn't have played Oblivion without mods: got it more than one year after release, gave "vanilla" a try and uninstalled. Later I found out that there was a massive community and some very good mods. So I checked out the CK, modded some things I liked to see in game and installed a couple of major mods - and had a blast! (>100 hours gameplay)

I wouldn't have bought Skyrim if Bethesda hadn't promised to release the CK. Mods can tremendously enhance the experience, you do have to pick them carefully though. Right now I'm on a slightly modded (mostly GFX ini tweaks, some texture replacements and the 4GB fix) first playthrough of Skyrim 1.1 with a nord warrior char. Once that is finished I will play a heavily modded FO3 (gave up on vanilla FO3 after about 10 hours) and get back to Skyrim when the CK is released. I already have a ton of things that I want to mod myself and I will certainly use many mods others will make.

Bottom line: for me mods are more or less essential if I want to fully enjoy playing a Bethesda RPG

Some (few) of the modders for both Bethesda and Bioware games could.. should belong to their dev teams.

Keep in mind that some modders may actually work professionally in the industry in some way, or may have done so in their professional life at some point. It's misleading to claim that all mods are automatically amateur. Even in such a case, you have companies like Firaxis who hired the lead designer for Civ V from the mod community for the franchise.

For myself, Beth games are role playing games, but they do not have (or do not use, anyway) a character designer who has the visual aesthetics I prefer. Therefore, I cannot make a character I empathize with using their vanilla selections, and thus cannot really enjoy their games (sometimes to the point where I simply cannot stand to play them... it depends on the title, though, as some are barely tolerable). If it wasn't for East Asian modders like Ren and others, I would not have poured thousands of hours into Beth's games, nor would I have promoted them as pedagogical tools for years.

That's not even considering other tweaks, texture replacers, added utility items such as inventory sorters or waste junk recyclers (FO 3), etc.

1 month to go folks! Let's get 500+ different weapons and armor, 20 more houses/forts/castles, 100+ more quests that blow the MQ out of the water, 200+ new creature varations, new land, 200+ new spells, lots of new dragon types + bosses, and more!

Possibly my biggest complaint about the game is that there's far too many unkillable characters that quite simply don't need to be unkillable, I mean, it's pretty obvious if I'm attempting to slaughter every member of The Thieves guild that I'm not too fussed about failing their quest, in fact I'd expect to.

Would there be a mod to change that somehow?

I'm playing on console, so I'm just wondering really.

There is a mod, but I can't link to it because it also flags children to nonessential, which falls under the "mature mod" category that is against forum rules to link to.

I'm quite sure that someone already has plans to introduce a new questline to wipe out the thieves guild and restore order in Riften. It should be possible once the CK is available

lol. It's so true. Before starting to use mods I thought, "I don't need mods." But then once I started adding them to my game the number I use just crept higher and higher and higher...and higher.

Same here. When I used to go to TESnexus to mod oblivion, I felt like a woman entering an enormous clothing complex and looked at the pricing tags and they said "0$"... pick pick pick pick. I spent more time picking them than wearing them = I spent more time downloading and installing mods than playing the game :P

They literaly change Oblivion into a whole other game,

http://nehrim.de/startEV.html

Sorry to say OP but mods totally svck. You think you're done with a game like Oblivion then you end up playing it for years. More quests better graphics better armour, clothes and weapons improved faces and hair high res textures have your own house get mannequins and put your stuff on them better bodies new landmass bug fixes better UI improved magic improved signs better lighting realistic weather better sounds new creatures no level scaling no level cap oh wait here comes another quest release that's longer than and better than a Bethesda expansion this DLC is rubbish never mind someone's going to come along and make it all better man you're going to go on forever with all this crap.

Don't do it.

To answer OP question, so far the answer is no.

And IMO it'll be a good while after the CK before we see any essential mods. Skyrim is a much better balanced (if you don't exploit smithing etc) out of the box than oblivion.

Still I would always recommend the pc version if you have a gaming spec computer and not a mac or something.

There are the "must have tried and tested mods", and then there are a 1000 other useless mods that I personally wouldn't bother with because they will clutter your game and probably cause a bunch of problems.

I used mids in Oblivion to nearly overhaul the game. I got rid of level scaling, converted the cities, made the countryside outstanding, changed spacecraft, upgraded economic features, made bows useful, adjusted the map to zoom, etc, etc. It's amazing how you start adjusting one annoyance and then it snowballs. I made Oblivion twice the game it was, and I never added any content, just built on what was already there.

Mods are ok and give Beth ideas that they can possibly put into the next game or even DLC for Skyrim if the mod comes out quick enough. You like the changes to the bow in Skyrim, that came from a mod.
