Arkane's new game, published by Bethesda, is "Dishonored

I'm really excited about this. Look at those developers! Not only do they have Harvey Smith (a Deus Ex vet), but it sounds like just the kind of game a Deus Ex "very devoted fan" like me wants. I can't wait to get my next GI issue.

You do realise that the Deus Ex fanbase pretty much hold Harvey Smith responsible for ruining the Deus Ex franchise with his design choices for Deus Ex: Invisible War, right? :P And he haven't done a single good game since then.

Dishonored do look very interesting, though :) And Arkane made some excellent games in the past, I've lost count how many times I've played thru Dark Messiah!

Just the mention of those involved has triggered my interest-o-meter.

Might well be one worth watching.

He did? They do? Aw well there goes my hype... but... maybe he learned his lesson?

Interesting. A stealth-only game could be fun - a nice alternative to bullet-spraying shooters.

Too bad most of the non-BGS-developed games published by Bethesda Softworks tend to be mediocre or horrid.

I think an Arx Fatalis 2 would be cooler. Or even an Arx Fatalis reboot.

Dishonored is the antithesis of a edge-of-your-seat roller-coaster ride. It's a game about assassination where you don't have to kill anyone. It's a game about infiltration where you can set up traps and slaughter the entire garrison of an aristocrat's mansion rather than sneak in. It's a game about brutal violence where you can slip in and out of a fortified barracks with nobody ever knowing you were there. It's a game about morality and player choice where the world you create is based on your actions, not navigating conversation trees.

If this is true, the game could be really great.

That does seem to be the trend. But, I like to think that it's only a matter of time until they start publishing decent games, after all they've obviously been investing a lot in it over the last few years.

Sounds a bit like Deus Ex when I read it, so it sounds good.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!

Sorry, I am too excited.

I disagree completely. Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah weren't masterpieces, but they were good and fun to play.

Besides I doubt im the only one who would welcome a new stealth game (on console anyway, P gamers are likely satisfied with thief), splintercell became an action game, other than that it seems the place is flooded with shooters.

Looking at the cover, I am interested in the style aswell, I havent seen a sci fi stelath game (well aside from deaus ex, but you can play it as a shooter if you want).

Yay a dev is here. (allthough they should be different colours, I thought only Obsidian were orange).

But if this game fails, he'll be dishonored.

Dark Messiah IS a master piece, it is the best action game ever.

While I'd admit some disappointment that this isn't Arx Fatalis 2, or a spiritual sequel, this is more than offset by my love of stealth games - I'm quite excited to learn more about this :)

I didn't talk about the Arkane games like Arx Fatalis, but the Harvey Smith games after Invisible War. Infact, I stated that I enjoyed Dark Messiah greatly :)

And I also think Dishonored sounds very promising :)

Looks pretty good, but GI might of been overselling it.

Hope it stands up to those standards that GI has now set. Anything less will be considered a disappointment.

Any magazine cover/major story hypes up anything. I always just weed through the over-excited verbiage and just try to get a feel for what the game might be like. This one looks really interesting, a cool, stealthy change of pace from the type of games I play. Or so it seems.

Try to be optimistic. The less we talk about Invisible War, the better. I'm sure Smith regrets most of the design decisions in that game.

Why are you guys so onboard?

Bethesda hasn't been doing too well with their "new" IP releases so far, just look at Brink and Hunted. Everyone was hoping Brink would "revolutionize the FPS genre", and it turns out to be 10 times worse then the games it was trying to out-due. Hardly anyone was excited for Hunted, and it just disappointed whatever fans it had.

Haven't they proved themselves really bad with new IPs? Do you want to get your hearts broken once again? :sadvaultboy:

Indeed, but it's a big if. It seems very few stealth games can get away from being "just like your old favorite stealth games, but better, because we got rid of some stealth for MORE ACTION!" I have little enough hope for the new Deus Ex, less for the new Hitman, and am pretty much just waiting to be disappointed when we're finally given some info on Thief 4. Still, as the article mentioned, Arkane seems to know what they're doing but has been hindered by past publishers; I will at least be keeping an eye on this game. Heavy-freedom, stealth-or-action games like Deus Ex aren't attempted much, and more often than not are just typical FPS games with expendable "elements" of those features attached to lure non-FPS fans into buying it. Dishonored will have a lot of scrutiny to endure if it's to escape my substantial no-interest-in-playing pile.

I don't know about that but I do agree that 90% of Softwork's other development projects haven't done incredibly well. I think Rage, Prey 2 and Dishonored may change that but we'll have to wait and see.
