ATI HD4850 - Core2Duo Fix Working | 50+fps

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 3:05 am

So, after days of experimenting and picking peanuts out of poo, I finally have the game in perfect working order, no texture popping, no artifacts and no slow down.

Here's what I did:

Must have latest patch for rage installed.

1. Uninstall all graphics drivers - Make sure you remove all trace of ATI drivers(important), use driver sweeper, or uninstall graphics card from device manager, and remove ati folders from C: drive and C:/program files/.
REEBOOT

2. Install latest amd_catalyst_11.10_preview2_win7_vista.exe drivers from AMD.

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU122AMDCat1110PreDriverV2.aspx
REEBOOT

3. Create a new file called rageconfig.cfg in your rage/base folder, and insert the following text:

seta com_videoRam "512"seta image_anisotropy "4"seta image_usecompression "0"seta image_lodbias "-1"seta image_useCache "1"seta image_cacheMegs "200"seta image_cacheMinK "50"seta m_smooth "0"seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"seta vt_maxPPF "8"seta vt_lodBias "-1"seta vt_minlod "-1"seta vt_maxaniso "2"

The first bit 'seta com_videoRam "512"' is the amount of ram your video card has in MB, change your to fit, if you have 1gb on your graphics card, put in 1024 instead of 512. important

4. Set launch options - create a shortcut to rage.exe on your desktop, right click it and go to 'properties', then in the 'target' field, after Rage.exe, put a space, then this text:

+cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +seta com_allowconsole 1 +vt_maxPPF 8

Must be a space after Rage.exe

5. Leave Catalyst A.I. enabled.

6. Start game - Put V-Sync option onto smart, and the rest at default.

Start the game and hopefully enjoy.

I gonna start testing upping the graphics since the game runs soo smoothly now.

Let me know how everyone goes :).

Works great, some textures still load slower but the fps is really high now and the graphics not as bad as before.

E8400
4gb ram
Vaporx 4890@1gb

I put anisotropic filtering to high and AA to 4x and no problems with that either :)

Thanks mate, I managed to get RAGE working on with these tips Win XP SP3 after trying lots of other combinations.

The game is still a bit unstable, sometimes crashing when I'm driving but really my biggest problem now is a crash when I try and leave the Ghost base after the first mission.

Does anyone know whether its and Autosave or a texture/new map loading issue?

Win XP 32 Sp3
Athlon 64 X2 6000+
ATI 4850 X2 2gb AMD 11.10 preview
Crucial 4gb DDR2 6400

NB I did get the game running with PS3 style pop-in using the 11.8, but these fixes reduce pop-in considerably with an excellent FPS at 1680x1050

Seems to work great for me, but I don't know if it's because of the tweaks or because of the recent patch.

Either way, thank you! I have the same specs so I'm thinking your suggestions helped.

Specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E7400
ATI Radeon HD 4850
4 gigs DDR2 ram
Win7 x64

I can finally play this damn game.

What the hell. You solved the freezing issue... how did you do that? I have to tinker with this now. Damn you, I have work to do.

C2D E8400 @3GHZ
HD 6950 2GB VRAM
4GB RAM

Installed 11.10 V2 (from 11.8), used your rageconfig.cfg, used your launch options. This together with Texture Cache: Large has resulted in 50-60 FPS, up from a previous 15-20 with 11.8 drivers and a freezing slideshow with 11.9/11.10. Whatever you did, it works on my computer.

Note: didn't bother removing old drivers and certainly haven't installed POS CCC.

edit: I should say, some texture popping noticed large areas.

Right. I've taken out some of the (as far as I can tell) useless bits and have ended up with this:

Rageconfig.cfg

com_allowconsole "1" //turns on the console
seta com_videoRam "2048" //change 2048 to your VRAM amount
seta image_usecompression "0" //can't tell what this does
seta image_lodbias "-1" //something to do with LOD, whether this makes it sharper or not I don't know
seta image_useCache "1" //tells Rage to use the cache, surely it does this without this command? but not gonna bother taking it out
seta image_cacheMegs "200" //tells Rage to use this amount of cache MB... seems like it might be important
seta image_cacheMinK "50" //minimum amount of cache to use in KB (why KB? seems odd)
seta m_smooth "0" //turns off mouse smoothing
seta vt_maxPPF "8" //GPU Transcoding, 8 can be changed to values between 0 and some large number, I think you can go at least as high as 128. This number relieves the CPU of texture streaming duty, obviously essential for Dual-core systems.
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192" //for getting rid of texture pop-in, change to 16384 if you have masses of VRAM
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192" //for getting rid of texture pop-in, change to 16384 if you have masses of VRAM
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192" //for getting rid of texture pop-in, change to 16384 if you have masses of VRAM
seta vt_lodBias "-1" //again something to do with LOD
seta vt_minlod "-1" //again something to do with LOD

Launch options

+cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1 //this is the cmd responsible for altering the game's use of cores, I didn't realise it could go below zero though?
+com_skipIntroVideo 1 //self-explanatory - worth noting that this command seems to do nothing when placed in the rageconfig.cfg, for some reason it has to be put in the launch options.

Running on max settings @1920x1080 with 50-60 FPS. Brilliant. Still some texture popping here and there, but nothing major. I would like to improve the quality of some of the distant textures but not sure where to begin, really.

EDIT: Seems like I removed something that shouldn't have been removed, testing to see what it was.

EDITEDIT: Ok the thing that was needed was seta vt_maxPPF "8", for some reason GPU transcoding still needs to be set even though Rage is supposed to be automatically doing it? So anyway, add that and you're fine. Added it to original post.

Well this is just plain weird, sometimes this fix works and sometimes it doesn't and I'm back to [censored] framerates.

Well this is just plain weird, sometimes this fix works and sometimes it doesn't and I'm back to [censored] framerates.
1 Step: Download and Install new ATI (AMD) driver: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU122AMDCat1110PreDriverV2.aspx
Bookmark this Site "You have to Restart ;)"

2 Step: Enable the A.I. in Catalyst

3 Step: Setting Game Launch Options in "Steam":
- Right-click on the game title under the Library in Steam and select Properties.
- Under the General tab click the Set launch options... button.
- Enter the launch options
+cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +seta com_allowconsole 1 +vt_maxPPF 8
and click OK.
- Close the game's Properties window.

4 Step: Create rageConfig.cfg:
- HOWTO: To use the file copy the code below and put it into a new text file named "rageConfig.cfg" in these Locations:
- For Single-Player - "Steam\steamapps\common\rage\base"
- For Multi-Player - "Steam\steamapps\common\rage\mp\base"
- The first line "1024" is for ATICards with 1GB Ram if your Card has 512kb change to "512" or "..."like ram.

seta jobs_numThreads "-1"
seta com_allowconsole "1"
seta com_videoRam "1024"
seta image_anisotropy "4"
seta image_usecompression "0"
seta image_lodbias "-1"
seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "1024"
seta image_cacheMinK "50"
seta m_smooth "0"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"
seta vt_maxPPF "8"
seta vt_lodBias "-1"
seta vt_minlod "-1"
seta vt_maxaniso "2"

seta com_skipIntroVideo "1" //Just work in Steam Setting but i still put it to not forget it
seta cvaradd jobs_numThreads "-1" //The old steam settings now in cfg
seta com_allowconsole "1" //The old steam settings now in cfg
seta jobs_numThreads "-1" //The old steam settings now in cfg
seta com_videoRam "1024" //Memorysize of your CrafikCard (512, 1024, 2048 aso.)
//seta g_showplayershadow "1" //Shadows
seta image_anisotropy "4" //Anisotropische Filter (2x or 4x, at bigger settings you could became problems)
seta image_usecompression "0" //no Texture Compression
seta image_lodbias "-1" //LoD Setting ?
seta image_useCache "1" //Makes Textures not Plopping
seta image_cacheMegs "1024" //Cache Size in MB
seta image_cacheMinK "50" //min Cache in KB
seta m_smooth "0" //better mouse speed
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192" //for better textures
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192" //for better textures
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192" //for better textures
seta vt_maxPPF "8" //better streaming of textures (8 für dual/tripplecores CPU's, 16 if your CPU more than 3 cores like quadcore)
seta vt_lodBias "-1" //just helps
seta vt_minlod "-1" //just helps
seta vt_maxaniso "2" //maximum Anisotropische Filter Megatextur (2x or 4x)

Save the .cfg

I got it working with the settings I posted.

Just for some reason when I was making some changes it wasn't saving them properly, but after a few restarts it is fine.

BTW Catalyst AI is not needed. I don't have CCC installed at all.

Good to hear it worked for some people, if you still have artifacts or other weird texture problems, are you sure you removed all the ati drivers thoroughly?

That was the deciding factor that got my game running, the second time I took about 10 minutes looking for every trace of the old drivers and removed them before rebooting and installing the new ones.

Hopefully we get some new drivers soon.

Great info, works for me for the most part, I get good FPS most of the time, but then I get random slow-downs to like, 2 FPS. When I pause the game (the mouse moves slow as hell so the lag is there as well) and exit to the main menu everything goes back to normal. I notice this likes to happen mainly when I go to the main quest-giver (Dan? I think) at the beginning of the game. Running on a ATI HD4850 with a AMD Phenom II X2 550.

Hmm, sounds strange, could be something to do with the smart v-sync option they put in, perhaps try setting it to off or on, you might get more consistent fps that way, also check your not overriding those settings within your catalyst settings. - Just a guess.

Hm. Everything in Catalyst is set to use application settings, and AI is on otherwise I get some funky texture glitches. Bah, I'll just wait for another patch.

Hm.... It seems to be catalyst AI that is giving me lag city. When on the game looks fine but I get about 5 FPS. When off the textures are glitched to s*** but I get like 60 and it only uses like 50% CPU compared to 100% with AI on. Need a way to fix these glitches without AI. Something I suspect only the devs that don't give a f*** about PC can do I guess.
