Ballistic weave - Random Drop?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 6:37 am

Just want to know if the ballistic weave mod is the same as other armor mods, in the sense that it has a chance to drop randomly or is ballistic weave player only?

You have to do the first several Railroad quests to unlock it from Tinker Tom (a RR member).

I know how to get it, my question is if i don't join the RR is there a chance for it to drop randomly at higher levels? Or is this only a player-only thing?

You can find the actual weave for application in random drops, but you need to complete some RR quests and, to fully utilize it, take Armorer perks. I love it personally. I was even able to weave Agatha's Dress! Now I'm happy. To bad I can't get strong to wear it though. He needs all the charisma he can get. :)

I'm pretty sure it is only obtainable from the RR.

Railroad Heavies, wear ballistic weave. Not sure if anyone else does.

I'm assuming that the random drop occurs after you've unlocked it? And if so, then you should be able to remove it like any other armor mod. I might be wrong on both fronts, though...

Can it be removed and put in another armor like other armor mods?

I also want to know if it does drop as random, at which level does it usually start?

I've never seen a ballistic weave mod as a random drop.

If you scrap a bw item you get cloth, fibreglass, ballistic fibre.

if you upgrade or downgrade it you get a mod leftover

I have looted leather railroad coats from corpses but just checked and they don't seem to be modifiable at an armor bench.

If you scrap them in Workshop mode you get leather

railroad coat

You could probably pick up some armored Railroad jackets in a random drop, although I'm not sure because it unlocks after you find some ballistic fiber in a DIA cache for the Railroad. It's possible that the Railroad agents won't have the armored jackets if you never complete this quest.

Regardless, you will not be able to remove the ballistic weave mod from something and put it on something else. You have to 'learn' the ability to do this from Tinker Tom.

So far I concerned, there's no BW drops, except from RR agents probably, as a poster said above.

It's DIA secret cracked by T&T, so I can understand why it's not dropping anywhere.

How about Reginald's Suit? I've never tried to dress a Super Mutant.

I'm on my second playthrough and I have had ballistic weave in a random drop and I haven't even been anywhere near the Rail Road yet. Also certain vendors have shipments of ballistic weave in stock.

But I am unable to use it yet as I haven't unlocked it via the quests yet or don't have the relevant armourer perks.

Edit: As has been pointed out it is the ballistic fibre I was thinking of not the mod.

That drop is the material that you use to craft the mod, not the mod itself.

Yes, you can apply the weave to Reginald's Suit. Strong won't wear it though, if that's what you're asking. Reginald's Suit is just a unique version of the Surveyor Outfit.

That's not ballistic weave, it's ballistic -fiber-. That's what you use to craft the ballistic weave. You can get the ballistic fiber right from the very beginning of the game, but it's useless until you unlock the ability to craft ballistic weave mods.

Never saw a (ingame) mod drop for the weave. If you were on PC you could use a (mod) mod that makes ballistic weave available without the Railroad. I find ballistic weave silly, such a high DR on a thin cloth? I modded armor mods instead to give much higher DR.

My bad, you are of course both correct. It is the fibre I was thinking of not the mod.

?I shouldn't post on my way to work when I can't verify stuff lol.

No. You can find it many places as well as purchase it from KLEO and the RR, and I have been able to remove it from clothing that actually has it (I believe, but I don't do that very often, so I can't be 100% certain, although I seem to remember that I did. I generally only sell that stuff as I get good prices - besides you get a lot less when you scrap than when you put it on - it's hardly worth it). You DO have to get the ability to do it by doing some RR tasks first though and be sure to up your armorer skills in the Strength tree.

Amendment: To clarify, in order to remove it from items and reapply, you still need the RR skill acquisition and you will not find actual items with ballistic weave in drops, just the raw material.

I have always occasionally found BW in misc. containers and sometimes on a foe. It's definitely not a regular thing, so I would assume it would be considered "rare". 2 of the weirdest places I've found it are at Satellite Station Sofia in a tool box and on the body of a Legendary Mirelurk. I believe I don't start seeing it until after level 20 though.

So? I mean, you're absolutely right, but, what difference does it make? We've all made it clear that you need to acquire the ability to use the stuff through the RR. It's just being nit-picky to try to make someone out to be wrong when they're not.

Given that it's directly relevant to the question being asked in this thread, I felt that it was a worthwhile distinction to make. The difference that it makes is that the ballistic fiber is not a mod that can be attached to clothing. It is the material used to craft the ballistic weave mods.

True, but, once you have the ability then whether it's ballistic fibre or ballistic weave is really rather moot.

You make weave from fibre. You can't make weave to apply as a mod until you have the ability.

It just muddies the water and is a matter of semantics.
