bash+power attack+... GRENADE?!

Post » Tue Jan 12, 2016 7:25 am

So this particular design decision is going to go down in history as the single most absurd combination of controls to be mapped to a single key....EVER.

Combining bash and power attack makes sense. That's essentially the same thing. But... throw grenade?! Seriously! Was this the result of too much alcohol or pure sadism? I mean exactly how does combining the control to punch an enemy in the face with the control to throw a grenade seem like a good idea? I hit the button to punch my enemy, which by definition requires me to be standing right next to him (or her), and instead I accidentally bounce a fragmentation grenade off his forehead! Yeah! "That's what I meant." Awesome! When did I save last? Crap.

Come ON! And not allowing me to assign the grenade to a different key as a separate function? What the hell is that about?! I have a mouse with four thousand buttons on it! I have a keyboard with buttons to spare! Why the hell am I saddled with this frustration inducing disaster of a control scheme?! Why can't I change it?!

So, if it's not apparent by now, this is a source of no small frustration and, in MY opinion, it's author is in dire need of a head slap from Leeroy Jethro Gibbs.

Okay, thank you, I've said my peace.

This game is 11/10 on IGN. This is how we did things in 2015. You got killed by your own grenade while bashing? Shame on you! :D

OP, you are absolutely right but while I'm on PC I think consoles do not have so many buttons. One it had to be. Maybe the dice decided?

Well that's an issue of lazy UI design (not separating design choices so they are different for each platform). PC has more buttons? Then separate controls into individually rebindable keys for the PC. Plus allow rightclick context menus and a whole lot more things that are possible with the PC.

There is no weapon bash/power attack button, i taught myself. Maybe there's some input lag going on, but in heavy combat it is impossible to not use explosives with that button

F4SE allows you to remap almost every key on the PC version, including the grenade. AutoHotKey will do something similar although with a few issues of movement keys sometimes getting stuck under certain well-documented circumstances.

The fact that it was an idiotic default setting aside, the real issue here is that even on PC we cannot remap these functions to different inputs.

Just as a horrific workaround for PC players, if you accidentally pull the pin on a grenade when trying to BASH or ZOOM in a scoped shot (yes...that is ALSO tied to the same button), you can ESC to pull up the main menu and cancel the grenade before tossing it.

For me, I rarely think to use bash or power attack, but it's so embarrassing when I oh, so carefully wait for the opponent to be in the perfect range and go to throw my grenade and... somehow attempt a bash from forty feet away. the onrushing supermutant horde slows momentarily, starts pointing and laughing because they know that now, if I don't fall on my butt, they are going to be right on top of me before I can get a redo going on the grenade. I'm lunch...

I binded bash / grenade to mouse4, and hold breath while zoomed, defaulted to left ALT, so there is that....I guess :D

Anyways, completely agree with OP. Stupid design.

I agree. I'm not typically one to bash game companies, but this is pure laziness.

Oh my. It's fine, although I hated it too. Here's the deal;

Bash actuates on press, down button and you throw a grenade on release, up button. With a point in explosives you can see why.. I use both all the time and have not tossed a nade by mistake for a long time. At this point I'd leave it even if I could change i,. I'm used to it.

Power attack is holding bash down, so unless you have nades unequipped in inventory, you will throw a grenade instead. It can't be reasonable, that people have to go into the pip-boy to unequip an item, in order to use a special attack ;)

I have F4Se, how do you do this? On my control menu, it still groups bash/power attack/grenade as a single key.

No a stab is on the press. It happens almost right away, but the game does wait to see how long you hold it. If you hold it any length of time it does the nade setup thing.

I use both, a lot. I never waste ammo on Dogs, Molerats, Radroaches, Mirelurk babies and some people. I bayonet them. I do it all the time. I also have 4 in Explosives and use nades all the time as well. It's very amusing and I can put nades into tiny places through small holes. As I have a lot of experience in this I very seldom make a mistake.

Yes, you use Bash attack by a single press. If you want to do a more powerful Bash (called power attack) you have to hold down the Bash key, incidently, throwing a grenade instead if equipped. So you have two melee attacks available with weapon in hand. A normal bash and a power attack (a bit slower motion, but way more damage)

The nade only throws when you let go. It will not throw if you keep your press on. I dunno 'bout power attacks past stab as I always have grenades equipped.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who had trouble with the grenade throwing interface.

I know the grenade function. That's sorta the whole essence of the problem. If in range for bash, and you want to make a power attack, it will choose to throw the grenade instead of executing a more powerful melee attack. If you only use the normal bash, of course you wouldn't know. That is why people are frustrated with, that those two functions can't be seperated with individual keybinds.

F4SE lets you make a custom keybinds file. I did find that if you have altered the in-game keybinds then the in-game one takes precedence over F4SE. The solution is to delete the in-game keybinds file and use F4SE instead.

From the F4SE page...

The hex list of keybinds is at https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd375731%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

I am left-handed so prefer to use the numpad for movement. I have movement keys to num-8, 4, 6 and 2. Jump is num-7. Sprint is num-9, steady is num-5, grenade is num-+, crouch is num-1 and VATS is num-0. I have kept dialog keys to the arrow keys. I have bound Examine to Mouse-3, R to Mouse-4 (which covers scrap, reload and holster) as well as the original R key.

F4SE is very handy once you have set it up properly.

Never had the problem, myself. Pressing a button once is quite different than holding one down for an extended period. I simply don't power attack.
I get that people have problems with it, though.
I'm not sure why they didn't make that key (lb, in my case) to be essentially a shift key, so you need to hold it, then depress another button/key to throw.

Bottom line, it's the design decision that highlights everything that is wrong with Beth RPG's - poor development planning, poor testing, poor issue resolution.
