Beginning of the end: monthly subscription model?

Post » Thu May 09, 2013 4:06 pm

Its called oversaturation.

Just because people are flooding the market with cheap F2P titles and a bunch of people are playing them (because they're free, why not hop in and try them for a month or two?), doesn't mean its the wave of the future. Its more profitable to retain a subscription base, if your game is good enough to command one then you should do it, just make sure the game is good enough to keep your players playing.

Just so you know, if I really want any TES, i could just play Skyrim.

And you have no clue how the economy will go, ESO may flop because few people would be truly willing to spend money they do not have for it, not because of the game is bad.

You're right, I don't know how the game will go. I promise you though, if the game fails its because ZOS dropped the ball, not because of voice acting or because people didn't have the money to throw at it.

Also, Skyrim is definitely comparable to TESO and vice versa.

lets be honest, games are driven by money, and if a company does not have the money, they cannot keep things going the way they want. This is likely one of the MANY reasons some MMOs went F2P, because they just did not have enough people subbing to get the game staying there (For whatever reason) and lack of funds for the game is one way they can lose money on MMOs.

Plus I do not like PvP, so unless that is a very, very, very minor detail (as in i do not have to play it and it does not affect me) I will stick to my "Crappy" SW:toR (at least PvP is nothing to the overall scheme of the game there).

Sounds like you're finally seeing my point. If a company invests less into the game, therefore = less quality and content, then the game can be free or cheaper. Games with higher quality can yield more profit from subscriptions if the game is good enough to keep people playing it. If a game doesn't keep upto par for a subscription model, then the only recourse is to recoup losses in the form of freemium/microtrans with a F2P model.

Eureka.

SWTOR has a Big + as a F2P Game. It was developed as a P2P Game. Wich makes the Quality much higher then the Games developed as a F2P the first place.

Do yourselve a Favor and download Neverwinter, Play it for an Hour (If you can), come back here and tell us again that F2P is the way to go with a serious face.

I like The elder Scrolls and i want to play TESO because i like the universe. So its natural i want TESO to be a good game. That said.. hopefully its a P2P Game.

The marked is flooded with F2P Garbage.. we dont need another one.

If i want to drive a Car i buy a Car. I dont buy a Bicycle because it has wheels too and is ceaper.

How high can the quality really be though, if it was doomed to go F2P so fast? I guarantee their content, customer service and upkeep (bugfixing, etc) is minimal, if even existant.

The rest of your post is spot on imho.

Exactly, people don't mind paying for a service that is good.

But if your service is terrible, and someone else offers it for "Free" they won't keep paying for your service.

I compare playing TOR to riding a rocket, when leveling it just goes WROOOOOOOMMMMMM.

Then, when you hit 50, it runs out of fuel and goes PRRFFFTTTT and it crashes while you die screaming in agony.

The end of subscription based MMOs? Absolutely not.

Blizzards Titan MMO will be subscription based and it will more than likely repeat what WoW did to the MMO genre in terms of popularity and sub numbers. The subscription model is simply a better, cheaper and more importantly fairer model than anything free to play. The recently released Neverwinter MMO is a classic example of why the f2p model is beyond ridiculous. Completely over priced! All this free to play crap is ruining MMOs these days, its becoming ALL about the cash shop and it detracts from you being immersed in the world. "Oh great I got an epic chest drop! It has a random chance to contain some unique items. Wait what? I can't open it because I need to buy a key from the cash shop!" I despise that sh*t!

I've played WoW for several years, i'm not one of those 1.3M people who recently unsubscribed. I did it long before that.. I was tired how they dumbed down the game to cater to the masses. I'd get from lvl 1 to 85 faster then I did from 1 to 60 back in the day.. There's no challenge anymore in it for me.

I do believe that's the reason most others left as well, not the subscription model.

I gladly spend $15/month to a game I completely support and have full options then a cash shop where people who spend real money in are given an advantage.

True but only a small base will. There are potentially millions of others who will never give the game a 2nd look because of this archaic model. Do not believe me, do your own research and talk to non-mmo players. Subscriptions are one of the greatest barriers to entry for an MMO.

A B2P model with a Cosmetic only Cash shop truely is the only way to grow a games base.

When did players knew anything? F2P didnt even fill up SWTOR's 20 server. Defiance B2P, horribly under the radar atm, no benefit at all. Truth is people eat from Zenimax's hand.

I'm pretty sure ESO will follow in the footsteps of previous popular MMO releases.
Step 1: Great sales numbers, long queue times.
Step 2: Company opens tons of new servers to fix queue times.
Step 3: People bail after free 30 days leaving tons of servers lifeless
Step 4: People complain and demand server transfers to more populated servers
Step 5: Company promises free transfers "soon", player base keeps dropping
Step 6: Transfers open months after release with so few players left that F2P is basically only option left
