best companion

Raul... Period.

Boone is just boring, creepy and crap shot.

Are you serious? For me he is insanely accurate and gets kills at long ranges. I tried Raul but he proved to be overall crappy in firefights compared to just about anyone else.

Don't forget that when you have high Charisma, your companion has higher Companion Nerve and bonuses to armor and damage ranging from +5 at CHA1 to +50 at CHA10. I always go for high Charisma and Luck in FNV. This might explain why the same companion does better for some than others. :)

I don't like Raul with revolvers. Give him a rifle instead and he's just peachy, tho....imo.

At initial lower levels since the patch, Boone isn't quite as insanely accurate as he used to be (doesn't have 100+ in guns at lvl5 anymore, or whatever) but he's still definitely a madman.

Go to Black Mountain, fight your way to the top (or sneak.) then go into the building he's in, read the terminal, unlock the other terminal, bust him out and recruit him.
You don't need to complete Crazy Crazy Crazy to recruit him.

In reality though, you'll more likely than not end up completing it after you recruit him. This is due to Tabitha appearing and going hostile on you the moment you exit the building. I was surprised myself, I did somewhat sneak up there, but yeah. That happened to me, not sure if it happened to anyone else.

It's part of the quest, when you talk to Raul and pick the line in your dialog choices to actually recruit him you can hear Tabitha yelling in the background something like "NOOO, you won't take my Raul!!!". It's very hard to pick it out as Raul is talking at the same moment (bad design there) and he's closer and therefore louder for you but it is there if you listen carefully. I only noticed it on my last playthru after a missing it in my other games. It's also scripted for Tabitha to appear and attack you as you exit his prison shack if you recruit Raul before choosing any of the other paths to complete that quest.

I don't like Raul with revolvers. Give him a rifle instead and he's just peachy, tho....imo.

I didn't either so I made myself a mod that changes his and other companion's default weapons, the ones that magically never need ammo. He does 'ok' for himself with a Trail Carbine that never runs out of ammo.

I personally don't like any companions in new vegas, going by what companions where like in FO3 - they just get in the way and blow yr cover when u don't need that... also, having a companion makes it too easy I reckon.

I used to like Boone a lot. His perk is useful in low-visibility conditions and synergizes well with ED-E's. BUT he tries to shoot at enemies from a LONG way off... even if he's using a shotgun. He also doesn't really know the meaning of "passive", and silencers don't work for him. His voice gets on my nerves after a while, too.

Veronica is enjoyable to have around, powerful and saves you the need to run to the workbench every time. Quite useful since you can make weapon repair kits on the spot as soon as you find the components; saves some weight when scavenging. She can also wear- and carry! - BoS power armor, and you don't need to keep her stocked up on ammo. If only she didn't run towards the enemies and get into my sights as I'm sneak-sniping...

Cass is deadly with shotguns and seems to generally behave herself, unlike Boone and Veronica. Her quest is easy to do relatively early. I don't really care for her perk, though, and for the need to leave her waiting when doing the Crimson Caravan's or the Van Graffs' quests. She also has the annoying habit of disappearing after being left waiting. Wouldn't take her along if I specialized in Energy weapons though; it probably svcks to lose the Van Graffs.

Raul is probably the best all-around human companion- fine in a fight, extremely useful perk, good upgrade after his quest.

Arcade- I'm not fond of his personality, but he has a good default weapon. Trouble is, he seems to svck with any other weapon. His quest is triggered very late into the game, too.

I've not tried Lilly, but the description of her quest in the Wiki puts me off.

Non-human companions wise, ED-E is the best. More versatile (can do melee AND ranged), great perk, acquired early and reasonably well-behaved when set to passive. The only downside is that his "danger music" gets on my nerves fast.

I'm a Boone/Gannon gal all the way, give Boone a modded Barret sniper and he's unstoppable, give Gannon a Guass rilfe and he's right behind Boone. ;) There are a ton of companion mods and fixes over at the other big modding site. I also really love playing Raul, but I think personal quest wise, Gannon's got them beat becuase of his former affliation which I love. Boone's personal quest is awesome too and actually so is Raul's, Veronica seems not have have very happy endings and Cass has some great lines in her ending, for almost all of them unless you go with Birds of a Feeather wtih Baptist Cutting, which I do quite often. Ed-E takes too long to go through the quest, and I love Rex, if I do Gannon, I do Rex. Sadly I have yet to have Lily stay with me long or do her unmarked personal quest.

ED-E

I like the perception perk.

I keep ED-E only. No human companions.

I find that all the companions have an annoying tendency to run into the middle of a fight and get themselves killed -- this is the only thing that makes hardcoe mode "hardcoe": keeping companions from committing suicide. Cass seems to be especially bad about this for me. I also don't care for the readings her voice actor did...thus, I generally use Veronica, who is much better acted and just as entertaining otherwise. And she does punch pretty hard.

Boone and ED-E, makes for some great long range sniping.

I feel about the same, if I had to choose just one it would be him. Starting to think my next playthrough will be a lone wolf and see how it goes with no companions.

Arcade and ED-E. Though, I just re-recruited Rex and he's pretty awesome. He killed two baby Deathclaws before I even knew they they were there. But, for human companions, I can't be without Arcade. Right now I'm running around with Lily trying to get her quest to activate and I'm missing Arcade something awful. He's adorable and he turns things into goo before I even realize I'm in danger. And he very rarely dies, even when I accidentally shoot him in the head with an AMR (oops!) or blow things up that he's standing next to because I like shooting things.

Whiskey Rose is my favorite companion so far. She is pretty hard core, I have her armed with a modified cowboy repeater and stocked with a bunch of ammo and whiskey. She has good commentary when you travel with her. Even though the lines she has are limited, her banter is still funny to listen to as we travel, since the radio svcks. And she is pretty good shot and good to have at your side in a scraqe...

Boone/Veronica and E-DE. Cass is too weak, Raul seems to weak to me, and I cant start his quest, Arcade is the worst, besides his perk. Lily is alright, Ill admit. and I never got Rex

IMO, it's Cass. Mostly because of her perk. Who doesn't want +2 DT along with all the pros and none of the cons of alcohol? Give her some better armor and a Hunting Shotgun with a few hundred slugs, and she's a real ass-kicker.

Veronica is awesome if you give her a Ballistic Fist, but I personally detest that character.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Passive mode doesn't work indoors.

For some of the characters it doesn't work outside either. Lily, Rex, and ED-E (after upgrade) are bloodthirsty. Forget trying to sneak snipe with the first two; with ED it is 50-50. If robots are around, sit back and watch ED go ballistic.
