TO BETHESDA, ABOUT 1.5 PATCH

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 4:13 am

OKAY, i hope bethesda read this, sorry if my english its not so good.

BETHESDA im a big fan of your work, and when i started playing skyrim i loved the game in just seconds, but theres one litle thing that bothers me SO much, and that would be the shadows, OMG please fix the shadows, when i started playing all looked great, but then i notice the terrible shadows. it just looks terrible, its like a moving chainsaw, its that bad, now im playing on a ps3. and i have the latest patch 1.4, and i do have the game on pc too. on the pc the shadows looks pretty bad too on ultra, but when i change some .INI settings the shadows look smooth and without a hit on performance.

So PLEASE bethesda you really need to patch this, i know consoles will maybe never get mods and well i love playing on console anyways i love how the graphics looks on my super HDTV, and yeah i have plenty of mods on the pc version too, but i still love playing on console, but if theres one litle thing that will be: THE SHADOWS

FIX THE SHADOWS ON CONSOLE PLEASE. thanks

Hook you PC up to your TV, get a Gamepad for it (official MS for XBox360 or one of the many PS3 look alikes out there)

Play the game as you would on a console with Mods and every other convenience a PC gives you.

that would assume his pc can handle skyrim mate. not everyone has a gaming rig that good. i honestly have to agree with the shadows thing there is no reason they should look like that with the current technology and advances we have had in graphics

i would love to do that dude, but my pc cant handle 1080p like my ps3 do, u know? in that case i would just buy the game on pc and not ps3 in the first place
when i mean ultra i mean ultra on just the shadows, the other in low exept texture, and res one of the lowest. and im not talking about myself here im talking about all console players that thinks that the shadows looks really ugly, i mean a ps2 game makes a better job doing shadows, hell even fallout 3 had some great shadows

Your PS3 isn't handling Skyrim in 1080p. It, or your TV is just upscaling a 720p image to 1080p.

As for the .ini tweak you refer to i assume you mean somtething like iBlurDeferredShadowMask=. Increasing that setting takes up a significant amount of RAM, something the PS3 has very little of. The reason you didn't have a performance hit on PC is because your PC easily has more than four times as much RAM as a PS3.

Nothing... apart from the fact they look like they've been cut out with blunt scissors by a 5 year old!

I've never noticed anything wrong with the shadows. It's not the kind of thing that really matters. People are graphics obsessed these days. I started out playing text adventures - you should all count yourselves lucky.

My laptop has 4x the specs of my 360, yet Skyrim still chugs.

Even with the optimization mods its still pretty ordinary. I shouldn't have to spend an hour trying to make a game work.

I'd much rather seem them use their resources to add depth to the game rather than simply make it look pretty.

This is something that I really don't get from some gamers, and there opinion is there opinion. i played Skyrim yesterday after a long weeks of work for 10 hours yesterday, and not once do I sit there and say look at this shadow, look at this cave it has some lighting issue in the corner. I just enjoy the game, it is a masterpiece, it has no issues that really bother me, it is always something new that I find everyday.

I started out playing text adventures as well, as a matter of fact, I still play several of them. That is beside the point, this is not a text adventure, this is a fully rendered beautiful environment that has pushed this console generation to places that I never expected to see them go. With all of these beautiful locales all over Skyrim, it's easy to miss something like the shadows but, my shadows have no definition whatsoever... alot of them appear devoid of shape and just mainly a pixelated mess. While it's really not all that important to me in light of some of the much larger issues I've had... I'd enjoy a fix sometime in the future.

Yes, it is quite ugly... if you spend your entire game staring at one wall without moving.

It's very distracting and kinda kills the immersion for me, and others.

In this day and age, there is no reason the shadows should look and act like that. (Especially this many games in, and patched to this degree. Shadows have always been a sore spot with Bethesda games on this engine. And the NetImmerse engine before that.) I'd rather they just remove the whole shadow system than give me this broken ugliness!

You're lucky you can blind yourself to it's hideousness. I however, can not. It smacks me in the face every time I see it, hard.

If hyperbole was a sport, you could give yourself the gold medal. Hideousness? Broken ugliness? It's a one-second graphical stutter, which is only visible if you're standing still and happen to be staring at the affected area.

Yay, gold for me.

Did my point get made? It's distracting! Simple as that. I don't like it, nor do I have to because it doesn't effect you.

If your fine with half-assed work in the shadow department, happy for you. I however thing they could have sorted this nasty issue with shadows long ago if they really put their minds to it. But here we are, many many years, and a few "new" engines past Morrowind (Where I came in.) and shadows still svck. I'm don't giving them a pass on this. As should any fan of the series.

Fix your damn shadows Bethesda!!

By and large, the shadows look fine, except for this minor stuttering problem that crops up. And you do realize that they build their game engines from scratch each game, right? It's not like they take one engine, keep upgrading it and keep saying, "Let's leave the shadows alone, just to see if we can drive one Canadian guy completely insane."

Well he did state he could run ultra already so ya not an assumption more of a tip which I strongly suggest because PS3/360 does not run on 1080p they run on 1080i or less by stretching it to that scale as for the reason consoles are not have current technology its 7 years old BGS tailored the engine to it and has squeezed every last bit they can while able to be somewhat stable... the shadows on PC with max anti aliasing are still pretty bad for some reason. People excuse it because Skyrim is large when it doesn't even utilize a portion of my current rig let alone all of my previous one.

The transition of day/night shadows is a joke though even Minecraft has been able to pull smooth transitioning off and its on a horrible engine not built for large games BGS is using the same engine new name that's all so there really is no excuse for shadows to be that bad.

Personally I think there are bigger issues to resolve in the next patch. Bugged quests, bugged weapons, Esbern's bugged potion, Brand-Shei not leaving prison...
