Bethesda Forums are very friendly - Bioware not so much.

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 6:04 am

Other than the forums on Encyclopaedia Metallum this is the only forum I am a member of. The reason being because this forum has rules and a good Moderator team that doesn't allow the lack of etiqutte to drop below acceptable levels.

I have been on other forums when needing other information and have seen how most lack the same respect that most here seem to have and as a result have had no desire to join any other forum. I feel that te people here for the most part are friendly, mature and intelligent

I don't know, I never really liked this place. I should probably just stop coming here before it becomes a habit.

Hehe. I'm personally looking forward to visit these forums in 2050 or something. I hope it lives to see that age. :)

I hope I live to see that age! I wonder how viable forums are for a good haunting?

The Beth forum is definitely in the top two of gaming forums, probably because 1) the average age of the forumites is higher, 2) the kind of games that Beth makes attracts certain kinds of people, and 3) the forum has strict rules.

Neogaf (NEOgaf? NeoGAF? I can never remember) is the only other forum that compares -- and that's a pretty exclusive forum.

Considering the horror stories I've heard about people's forum accounts being linked to their Bioware game accounts, with some of them in the past having lost access to their games after a forum ban, I'd be scared to post there.

Overall this forum is very laidback, the moderators too. Maybe that opinion will change as I dive deeper into the moderator board, but we'll see.
They aren't that laidback, they just throw an odd joke or sarcastic remark here and there.

If only I could remember my old account info, I wouldn't mind logging back in over there just to say hi to some old friends.

Memories
I'm a member there (TheWatersGreatGuardian) and I hardly use it for pokemon. They have great miscellaneous and entertainment forums.

Bioware forum is terrible, the creepy romance stuff, the tali sweat anolysis, the mods are dikes. "Oh someone dissed EA, thats a ban", segregating the DA2 section, and the general attitude. I swear I saw gaider once say "its not your story its ours" when people complained about the retcons in DA2. Truely a great community.

Another horrible one is the escapist. The guys actually enforce a low content post rule. Instead of quoting someone who said everything, and saying "this" you end up with "This guy pretty much summed p my feelings word for word, now these words are just being added to avoid a warning". Then you have them catering to minorities. I got a warning for offending a transixual, by saying I consider the opperations as self mutilation, and I didnt see them as another gender.
Then they banned me for this post in a thread about Hitchens death.

"A ill informed and hate filled man has now passed from this world."

Its funny becuse your religious, and Jewish I belive, and seeing as the Jews killed quite few people in their time, and lop of childrens foreskin because a voice in a guys head says too. Oh and people still quote the primitive ones who were the first to hear voices.
Anyway its a shame, he was a great man, a voice of reason, who was damn good a destroying others in debates.

Apparently its ok to call hitchens a ill informed and hate filled guy, in a thread about his death. But its totally wrong to point out the irony of a person who follows a religion that is both ill informed and filled with hate (google Numbers 31:7-18 plenty, more you could find, but point is you an get much more hate fulled than the abrahamic religions).

God I [censored] hate that place, only good thing is the webcomic critical miss.

The ODST section was alright, Halo 3 had people discussing the poor state of MP now, and laming reach for killing Halo...

I don't really see the problem with that: is it really so hard to write a sentence saying "I agree with you because ..."? I remember seeing a thread recently where literally half the posts were people quoting someone else without adding even a single word of their own, which didn't exactly add anything useful to the thread, it simply made it quite tedious to read.

Better than useless padding that adds nothing imo.

[on the hitchens debate]

It's kinda funny (ironic? not sure) because Hitchens himself was jewish.

Although I kind of agree with you (on the subject of hitchens) that if you call out someone, then other people have every right to call you out too.

This is the only forum I'm registered to (not really true but it is the only forum I know my own password for). I think it's mostly this good due to perfectly reasonable rules that prevent conflicts, and a good set of moderators who know when to step in and do so in such a way that the conflict doesn't escalate further due to their intervention. Aside from that, the moderators do not simply moderate, they are part of us and contribute to the community.

I was worried a couple of weeks ago that things were starting to go downhill (won't go into specifics as to why), but I'm perfectly happy with how the forum is right now.

As a Dutchman I've visited a couple of Dutch forums, and I don't know if it is the language, but we seem to be rather aggressive and prone to insult those who have a different opinion or who are new to the forum. Somehow English forums seem more laid back and respecting to me, but it could very well be that I managed to avoid the filth.

I agree with you because of those exact reasons :hehe:

It's just annoying when someone quotes am entire lengthy op and writes nothing of their own. Or even worse, "cool story bro" Good thing the Skyrim general seems to have finally gotten over the CSB period :P

I've been here for what seems like forever now, 8 years if not a decade (my memory is bad with specifics, maybe it's 6). Honestly I chalk it up to the moderator team and the rules around here. The selection process seems to be rigorous, and there have always been a few moderators who have been around for years and have a great deal of experience with what they do. There isn't much that gets by them. Plus they're often involved in discussions on the side, and still participate in the forums beyond just swining around the banhammer.

Religion and Politics being banned goes a long way towards diffusing tension and friction between members too. Add to that the unsual amount of older members here and you get a pretty nice place. Maybe we don't still hand out http://images.uesp.net/c/c4/Fishystick.jpg to the initiates anymore, but we don't run them out either. Because discussion on and about post counts are not allowed there isn't much of a perception of "this guy has more posts therefore he is better" either (not to mention less spam of "I just got curate!").

Bioware on the other hand...well I can't say I have experience with their fourm or it's members, but I think I've seen some of the general "worst" they have to offer in screenshots passed around. The term "biodrone" is thrown around, and in some cases it turns out to be a perfectly accurate stereotype. Not to say everybody over there is one, but they do exist and there are enough to color the tone of the boards. Kind of like how we have some older people here, we're not all old people, but there are enough to color the tone of discussions one way or another.

AND ONE MORE THING (is this post getting long enough yet?): Bethesda games have a history of modding and community involvement with the games. People see a problem and think "maybe I can fix this, or maybe someone else on the mod forums has already fixed this" and get to it, whereas Bioware games have more a sense of "this is a problem time to rationalize!"
