Bethesda games...which one are good?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 6:06 pm

People know bethe did QA and Obsidian still gets blamed for bugs.

No its not a bethesda game, it may use their engine but that dosent mean jack [censored]. If I lend you tools to make something, what you make isnt mine.

Bethesda's record as a publisher is bad.

Brink was unplayable.
NV was buggy, I love it but admit that.
WET was forgetable.
Rage was nothing special.
Hunted was forgetable.

Then they canceled prey 2 which had potential, and screwed over Obsidian with FNV payments.

Folks can argue semantics all day about what is a "Bethesda game" and what isn't.

You might consider that to refer only to those games developed by Bethesda Game Studios, others might consider it to encompass all games published by Bethesda Softworks.

Haven't played Brink, Wet or Hunted, but I enjoyed the heck out of New Vegas and RAGE. Installed New Vegas on release date and the only bugs I encountered at the time were extremely minor cosmetic stuff, like radscorpions getting stuck in the terrain, etc. No CTDs at all, and the cosmetic bugs seemed to be completely fixed after the first or second patch IIRC.

There hasn't been any official information about Prey 2 yet. Hope it's still happening, but who knows. As for Obsidian and New Vegas, they signed up to develop the game for a huge flat fee, with a much smaller contingent bonus only if and when they ever reached a certain Metacritic score, which simply never happened. There was no "screwing over" of anyone, as far as the bonus goes.

So the story, characters, choices, atmosphere, and so an so forth are better for it.

Not in my opinion, no. I liked New Vegas, but thought FO3 had stronger characters and was more atmospheric. The story's debatable, but I wasn't really so taken with NV's; at least it had more branches to it, though.

FO3 is the best game they have ever made IMHO

Brink is the most underrated game I've ever played. It was fantastic.

Not giving them a bonus becuase of 1 metacritic point.
A point they would have had if betehsda actually did the QA properly, one thing people complained about most were the bugs. Thats the publishers fault.

You have to understand in the business world, if you start giving a little leeway, you'll be asked to give more, and more. Either you continue giving more leeway, or you look bad for having given it once and then never again.

Anyways, as per suggested games, if you're up for the "originals", Arena and Daggerfall are free, and could probably be played on a microwave if with a little tinkering :P

For PS3, Oblivion, possibly Fallout New Vegas (I have no idea if that game is suffering any memory issues) and Fallout 3 (Non GOTY Edition).

I once worked for a large company where the managers thought that being similarly hard-assed was good business.

They no longer exist.

Oh, good. Better be just a rumor :stare:

Prey was the best thing done with Doom 3 engine, it had portals before Portal :hehe:

If you like horror games, Call of Cthulhu is a really good, often overlooked game by Bethesda. I'd recommend getting the original Xbox version if you can (it should be compatible with 360) as the PC version is pretty buggy, but if you don't have an Xbox and your PC is halfway decent it should still play well (and can be had for less than $5 now).

To my shame I had forgotten about that. Morrowind aside, it's by far the best game with Bethesda's name on it (not made by Bethesda though). There was one game-breaking bug for me, but I got past that point by downloading a save from some forum.

Definitely. It's a shame Headfirst went bankrupt and ended up finishing the PC port in their spare time, it does have some issues. But I'm told the Xbox version is pretty solid.

I second this recommendation. One of my all time favorite games.

Runs just fine on PC for me. (Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth)

Arena and Daggerfall are free now - worth a look if you can look past the graphics. And gameplay mechanics.

Skyrim is my very first Bethesda game. I was wondering what other Bethesda games on the PS3 are worthy to buy?
Don't buy Oblivion for consoles, you can't really enjoy oblivion without mods.

Eh, I'd disagree. Mods make it 1000% better easily, but since it's so cheap now there's really no reason not to get it if he liked Skyrim.

One does not simply play Oblivion without mods. Jk I suppose you're right, playing the previous title is a good thing to do, while waiting for more content to be released for skyrim.
