Bethesda says developing for PC is "a headache"

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 11:36 am

well when the 360 and ps3 sells something like 3 million and pc only 300k, why wouldn't they go for the consoles?

That's 300,000 retail sales. They don't include digital sales in that, for some reason, and I suspect at least twice as many people are buying this game through Steam as they are buying the DVD hard copy. For that matter, there are companies like Paradox Interactive, which sell almost exclusively PC games, and they reported recently that they made 90% of their sales over services like Steam, and as such are simply leaving physical retailers behind to focus upon digital distribution games, which is ultimately better for PC gaming as a whole.

Plus, PS3 is nowhere near 3 million sales.

This game pulls in more money over the long haul on PC, as well, because the mods will draw more people in. They still are selling copies of Morrowind.

If this is an example of the ignorance of some of the consoles userbase then I'm pretty glad I got the PC version.

I don't really have a problem with the graphics, even though of course it could always get better. What I have a problem with is the menu setup. I really don't think there is any excuse for it..since Oblivion had a better menu/options/inventory screen, so it's not like they hit a stonewall, but more like 1 step forward 3 steps back sort of thing.

I could of told them piracy was going to happen a mile away, choosing steam was a mistake, it only makes it easier to pirate because they can just use the same crack from other games, I won't say what its called or how it works cause of the rules but they would of been much better off just leaving the game without DRM, now its only causing lots of problems for people who actually bought it such as having a lot of connection problems when trying to install, decrypt and update and often times getting stuck in the progress bar, not to mention the game seems to have to fully download even when you use the disc to install it, a lot of people can't handle that, they either have slow connections or bandwidth caps forcing them to pay extra fees when downloading more then 2 or 4 gigs.

What he says is true.

Also, reason why we can't get the most out of our PCs: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2011/03/16/farewell-to-directx/1

@ Mightylink
False. Steamhacks don't allow you to play most games on steam. Steam is as good as any other DRM. Heck, at least it stops pirates from releasing the game before it's unlocked on steam if the game is a steam exclusive.

You're the proof to my previous statement, I see nothing but sooking and moaning from you.
Really? Oh, I'm so sorry, I won't voice my concerns about bashing a platform of my choice next time, your highness.

Let's be honest with ourselves here. Though Bethesda has always fostered PC friendly relations by releasing their development kits and encouraging modding, their target audience has not been PCs since Daggerfall. Morrowind, the game that put them on the map, so to speak, was an Xbox title, and their development has focused around the Xbox ever since. I, too, am a PC player, but this delusion that Bethesda owes us anything needs to stop.
Exactly. They are a business first and foremost.

they dont know how many games are pirated on consoles.. for some reason they dont even mention that...

The article wasn't about piracy, it was about developing for the PC platform. So logically the author of the article wouldn't go off on that tangent.

just throwing all blame on pc gamers..

If he had said "We are going bankrupt due to piracy on PC." or "We aren't making any revenue due to piracy." then maybe your remarks would remotely make sense. But he didn't. He didn't blame anything on PC Gamers. He simply outlined some very true facts about challenges every developer faces on the PC platform. The only place they blamed anything was when they cited the case where bad video drivers made Rage appear buggy.

To further reinforce that they don't blame PC gamers for any of these problems, nor are they throwing PC gamers under the bus, they have always put alot of effort into making the game highly moddable and don't resort to heavy handed anti-piracy techniques(which often cause difficulties for PC gamers). I think this is in fact very gracious of them considering the alternative paths other developers often take:

Bethesda will deal with it not by using "Draconian measures", but by handing extra power to the PC audience.

I recommend you find a reading comprehension skills trainer.

Did you miss the part where he made it a point that piracy was impacting sales? Apparently for the PC it's different than the 360 and PS3. BUT OH WAIT, IT'S NOT.

What I would like to know is who starts the piracy process? Is it a "mole" at the company? or somebody hacking into a gaming companies computer systems? I don't find the piracy as a whole interesting, I find the way it got there in the first place more interesting.

Bethesda basically just threw the fanbase that helped grow their series under the bus. seriously what were you thinking Bethesda

I wouldn't be surprised if the creation engine gets released next year

Did you read the article?

But even more important: Did you UNDERSTAND the article?

Judging from your mindless comment: No.

A perfect example of this would be Infamous 2 (a playstation 3 exclusive) was pirated and online two weeks before the game even launched. A PS3 exclusive pirated? YEP, imagine that.

It's harder. You need a modded console and in case of PS3 you also need to have a Blu-ray RW drive. Not that it stops anyone, but the console piracy issues get suspiciously omitted while every PC's one gets advertised all over the internet.
How hard is it when you can buy a already modded console?, nothing you mentioned here makes it any harder.

Probably because half the audience complain that the textures don't slaughter there $1000 video card whilst still running flawlessly and having a game space four times the size of Daggerfal.

Oh and you.. this game uses 25% of my CPU and even less of my GPU. I'd be happy if the game could atleast use my $2000 hardware to give me a decent framerate..

use of course being the key point there.

Not any harder than it is finding the PC files and then the software to mount the ISO to a fake drive. NOT ANY HARDER than it is on PC.

Because developing a game for the PC compared to consoles would be a pain. I do say it is worth the pain though!

Well Bethesda seems to think PC piracy is more rampant for their games. I'm not saying Bethesda is perfect and never wrong, but I think I'll trust them to know what is going on more than I will random posters on a fan forum who claim to be video game piracy experts.

Capitalism. Where the heart is replaced by money.
Or, where the heart is money. ;)

There's a reason that Bethesda releases mod kits and creation kits: To please the PC crowd. I can't understand why they don't use that opportunity to create an awesome PC mod instead of complaining. If PC gaming really is the master gaming than prove it and show off some really good content that blows even Bethesda away.

I can't imagine any mods making Skyrim a more awesome game though, because it's pretty damn awesome on its own two feet if you ask me.

Publishers, devs, and most console gamers themselves all conveniently ignore the fact console games are pirated just as readily and widely as PC games nowadays. You know, like the fact the 360 version of Skyrim was readily available on pirate sites one week before the release date.

Publishers have deals with the console makers to push the consoles, devs would rather develop for the cheap and easy 7 year old consoles, and console gamers need something to make themselves ( falsely ) believe at least one thing is better about their console over a PC.

Oh save it, what I just posted is basic knowledge... read wikipedia from time to time. You also seemed to miss the part where half of the replies here accuse them of using PC piracy as a scapegoat. PC piracy exists, CONSOLE piracy exists, for EVERY launch there are X amount of people who are going to buy the game, and X amount of people who are going to pirate it.

There are so many hardware configurations and drivers to consider that even the most robust game can come undone at the performance-seams.

This is totally reasonable

This is totally reasonable

Except for the people who were there for the launch. iD ignored it, support is still bad today and Rage launched months ago. It still doesn't work for over half of the people who bought it. They were busy blogging about their launch party while ever gaming forum on the internet was in an uproar. If it were just driver issues, the game would be fixed by now.

Have you been over to the Rage forum lately? I don't have to go there to know it's in the same state it was in during launch, but since it's basically a partner forum of this one, here:

Actually, Beth are pretty right in what was said, but:

PC's drive the development market, without them, you are left with consoles. Which means there is no need to upgrade your engines or systems because unless the console developers upgrade, there is no need to do so...conversely, if the consoles upgrade and you don't, you are left behind. Mmmm...sounds like a losing formula to me....

But most importantly, those who live in glass offices shouldn't hurl rocks:

A glitch caused by hardware issues will be a glitch only affecting one segment of the consumer market, and therefore that excuse cannot be applied when the bug or glitch is across all platforms or impacts on all PC users...and this has been trotted out (mostly by uber [censored]) across a number of Beth releases.

Take it all with a grain of salt. If someone has a PC they will have a PC for life. If someone has a PS3 or an oXBox, they only have it until the next console release or it breaks. The PC market is perennial.

Besides, my game looks prettier on PC than it does on console...they wouldn't have done that if they didn't love me
