"profitable" doesn't mean "lolwegetalotmofmoney." Profitable means they make enough money from selling their product that they have enough to futher increase their research and resources. Small-town walk-in clinics only become international medical megagiants through profit. A medical company that sells vaccines purely to save lives, while being a saint, will also only make just enough to keep the status quo. No expansion, no research. Overall, less lives saved in the long run.
Not every vaccine needs to make a profit. If they feared they couldn't break even, then I'd understand. If they
can break even, then why not release it? The article implies they weren't going to do anything with it because they couldn't make money. Obviously it has a reason to imply that, so I can't say for sure if it's accurate without looking at the source.
