Bioshock infinate "1999 mode"

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:11 pm

This is just [censored] awesome. bioshock infinite will have a "1999 mode" which will give core gamers a better, more challenging experience. the name of the mode is a reference to system shock 2 (best of the shock games) which came out in the year 1999. co-developed by looking glass studios and irrational games. Its about time the dumbing down stopped. had a massive arguement with the gf today but when i heard this news i couldnt give a [censored] this is just great Ken Levine FTW!

Sounds like you need make the right choices on what weapons and powers you need, the wrong choices could make the game harder...interesting.

This is why the mainstream media thinks gaming has a negative influence on people.

I'm excited for Infinite but...seriously.

Well I guess that's one good thing that can be said about Infinite.

EDIT: Even though I curse it's existance I know it will at least be a good game.

Cool. I hated the "no dying" concept. I also like the "1999" name. The world as it was at the end of the twentieth century, good times indeed. :D

A game which I have yet to enjoy. I curse it's existance because it peddles the name "BioShock" - though I guess you'd consider that game a disgrace to System Shock, I've heard SS is an actual RPG... - I consider BioShock my favourite game of all time because I love the setting and world so much. BioShock 2 was un-necessary enough but BioShock Infinite just turns it into a formulae, cheapens the original by trying to make the lightning strike twice with the fantastical setting.

"Big Daddy-esque creations, plasmid like things, a fantastical setting; yup that's BioShock." I don't know, I just find Infinite cheapens Rapture and BioShock and I don't like that; BioShock was a beautiful standalone game and turning it into a pseudo-franchise just pisses me off.

no system shock 2 is a first person shooter RPG hybrid, real time combat, just like bioshock. the thing is it has 10x more awesomeness than bioshock. thats all im gonna say, cos if i were to mention all the content that is in system shock 2 and not in bioshock it would be a huge post. but trust me, bioshock is [censored] compared to system shock 2. and i played bioshock first....

bioshock 1 peddled the name shock, shamefully dumbed down. you really are missing out not playing ss2. it is one of the best games ever made, recognised by many. alongside deus ex 1 of course.

Wow, we got quite a way into this thread before you brought up Deus Ex, well done. The 'everything new svcks' act is getting kinda old though.

Glad we are seeing this "uber hard" mode like Devil May Cry 3 where normal meant hard and hard meant insane mode. Still remember playing Megaman for the first time on the NES. You had NO saves, and absolutely NO PASSWORDS you just had your skillz as a gamer to get you through. My most hated stage was Ice Man jumping from platform to platform hoping to make it.

I'll definitely think about picking this game up if they have a hardcoe gaming mode.

So the difficulty will be comparable to System Shock 2? Does that mean my guns will break every three shots and are almost impossible to repair? SS2 was hard, man...

if you understand the game you can play without your guns ever breaking once. never had any difficulty problems with ss2 myself. weapon degrading is something that is seriously missing in skyrim too.

wait a minute, you have played fallout 3 and new vegas right? ss2 uses a simular weapon degrading system to those games.....in fact its better in ss2 cos you can just by maintenance tools and never have to worry about degrading again, as long as you have enough maintenance skill (just like repair skill in fallout)

I always reduce the weapon degradation rate in System Shock 2 for my playthroughs, I found it to be a bit too fast. Especially if you didn't have the skill to repair and had to rely on finding new guns that were less damaged, or auto repair tools.

making it more difficult to simply respawn if killed.

I wonder how they're going to do that. I thought that Bioshock was a bit too easy but turning off the vita chambers completely just didn't work well IMO, because the game was balanced with them in mind.

no the degrading rate is fine. it encourages you to use your full arsenal and tactics (like it should in skyrim other than just spamming bow & arrows for instakills) . but like i said you can just buy maintenance tools and no worries.

they will most likely make it just like ss2. you have to find and turn them on first, then they take some money to respawn you. best way.

Nice to know a big studio is at least putting some effort in, though I won't be getting my hopes up until we've seen the end result.

Maybe I should actually finish Bioshock 1 sometime...

I read it as "Had a big argument earlier, hearing this news cheered me right up", and I get the impression you read it somewhat differently (that the argument was had something to do with Bioshock).

I loved BioShock. I decided against the 2nd because it seemed like a game's worth of escort missions. It's a shame, because 2k made an absolutely incredible viral website leading up to release. They created a a missing persons case and added little bits of info each week.

I am curious to see how the new one turns out. I don't like uber hard games, so I'll just enjoy it on normal mode.

the mode will not make it "uber hard", just slightly more engaging. i wouldnt say any FP/RPG is super hard. you can save anywhere, anytime for goodness sakes, they are just more engaging on an intellectual level.

but hey compared to many of todays games i suppose you could say that system shock 2 is "uber-hard".

I've never played system shock 2. I dislike games where I get killed every 2 minutes and ones where they choose saves for you. I'm good at sports games, but not great at others, even though I really enjoy them. I always play on default difficulty and that's plenty.

thats not what system shock 2 is. there is an easy mode and a help feature for rookies, and you can save anywhere, anytime manually + auto save....

The degradation rate in Fallout was reasonable though. In SS2 my weapons were breaking constantly. I constantly found myself resorting to melee or else just running through areas as fast as I could.

I always reduce the weapon degradation rate in System Shock 2 for my playthroughs, I found it to be a bit too fast. Especially if you didn't have the skill to repair and had to rely on finding new guns that were less damaged, or auto repair tools.

That's what I did too in the end. Also toned down the constantly respawning enemies. Infinite enemies plus a fixed total amount of ammo is not fun.

I wonder how they're going to do that. I thought that Bioshock was a bit too easy but turning off the vita chambers completely just didn't work well IMO, because the game was balanced with them in mind.

Playing at normal difficulty, I don't think I actually ever died once in either Bioshock. And I'm not particularly good at shooters.

Easy mode in SS2 is harder than hard mode in both Bioshocks though.
