Blizzard bans users from Diablo III just for using Linux.

Post » Wed Jul 04, 2012 12:34 am

I searched for this and didn't get any results. Sorry if there's already a topic:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5978861022?page=1

Basically, what's happening, is Diablo III's anti-cheat system is detecting WINE as a third-party program, and banning users with it on their computer. So, basically everybody who uses Linux. What's even worse, is this is getting a lot of attention and Blizzard hasn't given a single response. Any attempts at a support ticket result in "No, you were using a third party program, kthxbye."

I'm really not surprised, considering Blizzard merged with Activision.

Thoughts?

I think people should wait for a non automated response before sharpening the torches and setting fire to the pitchforks.

Ouch. That pretty much rules out any Linux/Unix users playing Diablo III outside of VMs, and those can have issues when it comes to properly implementing hardware.

But I've already done all that. What am I supposed to do now? :[

This is the kind of stuff you can expect with a game that has always-online DRM. They can shut you out if they feel like it, and then find something in the EULA to justify it.

You don't use Linux.

So? It's still a faulty business practice.

Maybe Blizzard will make an official statement sometime soon. Maybe. It's quite possible. Fairly likely. Kind of expected. It could happen. It might happen. It might not happen. I don't see it happening. It's probably not going to happen. It's unlikely.

I find all of the workings behind Diablo III to just be creepy (almost as creepy as Arrowoflight's avatar).

Just Windows on another partition and dual boot. They support Windows and Mac - don't expect them to know about or understand the ins and outs and backdoor methods of getting Windows software to work on an OS they don't support.

Blizzard responds:

We’ve extensively tested for false positive situations, including replicating system setups for those who have posted claiming they were banned unfairly. We’ve not found any situations that could produce a false positive, have found that the circumstances for which they were banned were clear and accurate, and we are extremely confident in our findings.

Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned – cheating will.

This exact same thing happened to WoW players using WINE, as I recall...

So what's the consensus here; Just a bunch of angry customers trying to crucify Blizzard, or is Blizz just really good at covering these repeated claims up?

When i played WOW, they made all the excuses they could possibly make, even blaming me for having third party software on my computer for WOW, and i never installed any add ons, they messed up my account, it took them 4 and half years to fix minor problems, which other when i put in tickets for i was told it couldnt be fixed, then id put a ticket in and i had one of their ops, say it was a well known issue and easy to fix, they constantly made excuses and layed the blame on me for all sorts of reasons, and it easier to blame users than fix their own errors.

i like when my account got hacked and they pitched the authenticator, so i asked them if they'd do anything if i had one and i still got hacked. they told me they would give me a free month. to which i pointed out they could see in my records that i did buy one several months ago. the never gave me the free month.
STOR was worse though they blame everything on the user, they told me for the month i did play that my pc didn't meet the specs and after i had allready sent them a dixdag showing i surpassed them...
