Hi all Ozric hear its coming up to November 5th and hear in the UK that means bonfire night what are your plans and customs in your part of the UK also for our friends overseas hear is a breif description of what it is all about it would be nice to hear your thoughts on the celebration.
i plan on attending my village fire and having a rather nice toasty drunken time =]

in 1605 a group of recusant catholics in England were unhappy that there religion was made illegal in england so they decided to take revenge against king James and his government by blowing them up at the state opening of parliament by storing 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellar unfortunately for them they were discovered hunted down to a stately home in the midlands where they charged 200 militia of Worcestershire who were armed with muskets they only having swords do to there powder being wet the survivors were hung drawn and quartered we now celebrate this event by lighting fires placing dummies of Guy fawks who was the man responsible to light the gun powder onto the fire letting off fireworks

I don't think discussing a religious/political holiday about terrorism in this forum is good idea in general.

I'll be going to a local bonfire/firework night. I don't do my own because I'm too scared that something will go wrong. Plus, there is usually a fair there as well, so I get to go on a few rides, try to shoot some tin cans with cork guns etc.
I used to get involved with the "build a Guy" competition when I was a kid - I remember that being fun too.
I've also got a woolly hat that I always wear to bonfire night, so I'll be digging that out again this year. Nothing better than being out in the cold but all snuggled up and warm at the same time!

We do not celebrate that in the US, although I am familiar with the history and celebration.

Guy Fawks is actually where the term "guy" referring to a generic male person is derived.

I just like fireworks. I enjoy going to displays each year.

i always loved making guys when i was a kid too ...they always ended up resembling my maths teacher for some reason haha

I haven't been to a local display for quite a few years now. Last year (or maybe even the year before) I went round to my then-boyfriend's house and the whole family came round and made a bit of a part out of it. They'd bought some fireworks and I laughed my ass off watching his eldest brother singe his eyebrows when lighting them. We also had a fire in a barrel and toasted some marshmallows over it. It was freezing cold but it was a good night.

Wut? It's not like its a controversial holiday or anything (well it is, but because of the dangers of fire, rather than anything political or religious).


For some reason we celebrate it here too, I'm off to a bbq on he night, at a house with a really good view overlooking the public display.

It must have been two years ago I went to that party then, if it rained. I'm planning to go to a local display this time if it's not raining.

Not that us Americans have any reason to celebrate it, but I'll be going to a cook out.

Likely nothing, since I'm Old™, but I saw some wonderful fireworks displays in my youth. And no bonfire night was complete without unsuccessfully trying to cook a potato in the embers of the bonfire and stubbornly eating the unique combination of burnt and raw regardless.

I think I'm going to the local display in my town with friends. I'm not the keenest on fireworks, and think it's a little silly but I won't say no to going out

God I hate that movie and I won't be celebrating mostly due to me being in US.

I will say, "remember remember the fifth of november," several times.

Nothing here in Norway. I like to watch V for Vendetta on that day, but that's more because I like the movie.

How is it now a controversial holiday? It is about religious and political terrorism. I have no idea how the British think about it , but celebrating an attempt or failure of the guy just sounds ludicrous to me.
