Bored playing video games

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 2:41 pm

I have a problem. I can't get into video games anymore, no matter which game it is or how great it is, I just can't play a game for more than like an hour before shutting it down of boredom. I used to be a major gamer, playing all day and night sometimes. Hell I can't even get in to Skyrim despite what a great game it is. And there is nothing else to do. Maybe I'm just getting old. :P Any one else recognize this? What should I do? Take a break? A month? A year?

Take a break and do something else. There isn't "nothing else to do", regardless of where you live. Go for a walk. Start an exercise routine. Get a hobby. Get a girlfriend. Find a job. Start a blog. Learn how to mod. Etc.

Almost true. I started learning and haven't touched Skyrim but to test my mods. I'll get into it again after I fix my major niggles, which should take me about a year. By that time official DLC should be out, anyway, so I get to experience the game anew. :)

My suggestion is to pick up a new hobby. You played video games in your spare time, find something else - maybe even do something useful and/or constructive! So many of these threads lately. Gah.

Why do you see it as a problem?

If you get the urge to play something in the future then you can continue playing. There's plently of other forms of media to be entertained by or hobbies to try. There's no reason to force yourself to play titles you've already gone through.

To a lesser extent I had a similar mindset but saw it more an opportunity to try other genres. I wasn't so much bored of games but particular genres and more specifically genre conventions. Tried playing visual novels, experimental games and "un-games" as well as racing and revisited turn-based strategy. Lots of new options and I started to enjoy games again. Just not the genre-conventions that I now realise I can't stand.

I'm feeling the same way, I can't touch a video game without wanting to get off it now, but I do this a lot, there are some days/weeks I will only play video games and nothing else, and others where I won't touch them.

VNs are awesome, I cant enjoy games any more becuase of them.

Narcissu had me depressed for a while (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9AikR6kDVA still makes me sad). I regret nothing.

Getting books about something that strikes your fancy is also nice, even for people that are not really into reading

Getting to old? Bite your tongue.

Just don't worry about it. Games are for entertainment and if they aren't entertaining you anymore do something else. Some game will eventually come along that you want to play...or not...but really why would it matter as long as you are enjoying something you do enjoy.

That's probably just a result of playing too many video games. I used to have the same problem in High School, then I started going to social events and got a job and now it seems I never have enough time to play.

Too much of something makes you sick of it.
Just like I'm taking a break from Fallout New vegas.

Summer said it quite well so when that good game does come along, don't over play it and ruin it's magic.

Get a girlfriend.
woo you make it sound easy

I can't help, but I do recognize the problem. I've felt like that for the last years and I can't find any fix to it  and it's about everything, not only video games.

I heard JAHO makes it super easy. With a 50/50 success rate how could it go wrong :P

I'm similar. Sports games hold my attention, but I am only playing Skyrim in little 45 minute - 1 hour blocks. I need a fresh game...

Try some VNs. Some are more like books than games, but they are refreshing imo.

You can get Katawa shoujo and Narcissu for free. Narcissue is shorter, no interaction, but depressing.
KS has lots of text, but you still have choices that effect, what path your on. Some people get depressed, others feel happy.

Ok im going to stop trying to get more people into VNs now...
Dem feels.

Erik Hmm goodness if I knew I'd be playing instead of spamming posts on every forum I can find great people or friends on.
Make a game up offline or on with friends something silly and stupid.
Find a game to load up hat you never have tried or would not normally.

Sleep or spend time with others is another.
Honestly just sometimes games are so tedious and leave you unfulfilled it's best to do anything but sit at a PC.
Speaking of I need to get back into painting little miniatures till gardening becomes an option again.

I'm 24 (I think. I might be 23. Lemme think about this for a second).

Ok. I'm 24. 25 in July, i.e. officially mid-twenties.

I have a full time job. I have a girlfriend. I have many hobbies and interests (writing , photography, and boozing of course). Yet somehow I can still put in an eight hour session on on a Saturday. I go through phases. There have been months that I've barely touched a game. I just play when I feel like it.

OP - my advice is this: don't think about it too much. Play when you feel like playing. Some people move on from gaming. Some people just go on a hiatus. Just do what you want to do and don't worry too much about it.

I spend more time talking about games than actually playing these days....

reading too (both about games but more fiction novels... simultaneously reading 3 series right now.... The Kingkiller Chronicle, Game of Thrones, and Wheel of Time)
