Bretons and their feeling towards the Forsworn?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 3:30 pm

As a player who has always used Breton since Oblivion, I did have a question towards my allegence. After playing through many quests, I have decided that the forsworn do not represent the Breton people anymore than the Mythic Dawn represent the Imperials. They are a gang of savages who are native to the reach [snipped] the forsworn are savages who do not wish to make compromises, and that is why they are not treated as equals.

I feel this way and wonder how these people would have developed in a different reality, not being conquered. Maybe they wouldn't be savages and would be more like Tamriel's Bretons...no way of knowing. This kind of history repeats itself over and over again. When a people come in and there is war and other people are conquered and the new people take over the area...it just keeps cycling. My character is conflicted but there's nothing to be done really. Sadly, the Forsworn have become what they are now.

Spoiler
Bothela at "The Hag's Cure" expresses some sympathy for the Forsworn, but she is only one Breton.

I think we can all agree that the Bretons are greatly inspired by ancient Celtic (Breton / Briton / Brython) cultures of England, Wales and France. Especially the druid side of them. Merlin the wizard in the legend of King Arthur is an example of a Breton druid in classic lore.

But am I correct in my understanding that the Forsworn's racial make up is mostly Breton? I thought another name for them is the "Witchmen of High Rock"?

Umm no High Rock is supposed to be like medieval france, Bretons even have french sounding names. A native Breton of High Rock would probably look down on the forsworn more then the Nords.

So basically, it would be like Oblivion all over again. ;)

Bretons are loosely based off Medieval France and Medieval Britain. Possibly some small Germanic Influence, but Nords have more of that than them.

Indeed. The Bretons are basically mages with English accents but French names.

But...but they're Vikings! How can you not like Vikings??!

In all reality, there is very little Viking in the Nords. A few armour pieces play to this, but even those are a stretch. The Nords seem to have Scandinavian-esque boats and architecture, a hybrid Swedish/Atlantic Canadian accent, Celtic cultural influences and a LOT of Slavic names mixed with Scandinavian ones.

Hard to tell, but my understanding was that they were indeed related to the Bretons.

The Reachmen are a big mashup of mannish and merrish blood. Early books said it wasn't unlikely to find traits of any race in them, such as orc tusks, or elf ears or pigmentation.

Also, the bretons absolutely despise the reachmen.

I have no sympathy for witch-worshipping pyschopaths who throw rocks at me. They're not Bretons as far as I'm concerned, sensible natives like Aithenach are another matter.
