Post » Mon May 14, 2012 3:16 am

Hey, guys!

I've been craving a new addition to my favorite genre, Real time strategy lately.

The RTS Games I own are
  • Warcraft III
  • Rise of Nations
  • Age of Mythology
  • Age of Empires III
  • Star Wars Emprie at War
  • LotR Battle for Middle Earth II
Can anyone help me out according to my tastes and reccomend a new one for me?

Supreme Commander.

I like it because it has big robots blowing other big robots up.

It's only tough 'cause there's no save feature and you only get one life.

You should try out the Total War Series. Next month comes a stand-alone addon for Shogun 2.

This too.

Not only is the campaign mode incredibly in depth, but you get to watch lots of tiny men kill lots of other tiny men.

Crusader Kings II!

It's not fast-paced, but still lots of fun.

Command & Conquer.
You can't beat it in terms of RTS.

No mention of Company of Heroes? It's a little different than your standard RTS fare, but as an avid Age of Empires II lover I enjoyed it very much.

Try out one of the Total War games. Its divided into two modes of gameplay, on the campaign map you command your armies and manage your empire in a turn based mode. When two armies encounter each other on the turn based map the game will zoom in on the battle which is fought in real time.
I'm not sure which game you could start with, Empire is the weakest overall in my opinion. My favourite of the series is Medieval 2, it has the best combat, reasonable unit diversity and a very active modding community.

Thats a good one. The Blitzkreig mod really makes it fun.

If you don't mind space fighting and dated graphics, look for the Homeworld games. They are masterpieces. Well, except the first ones expansion :hehe: If you do mind the graphics, look at Sins of a Solar Empire.

Also as someone already said Supreme Commander is good for large scale battles, but you should get it's standalone expansion Forged Alliance instead, it has many good improvements, and you won't miss much on the stroy department. Supreme Commander 2 is a good choice if you like the first but feel it's too slow or cumbersome :hehe:

Europa Universalis!

For the same reasons. Although invading China whilst simulataneously besieging the capital of Baluchistan and putting down a revolt in Delhi sometimes feels like it's going faster than you can cope with at once.

Rise of Legends
If you enjoyed Warcraft 3 more then Rise of Nations or Age of Empires then I think you'll like the Command and Conquer games.
If its the other way then I think you'll like the previous Age of Empires games.
Have you tried any of the expansions for your games?

No ones said Halo Wars yet, that's a pretty good RTS for a Halo fan to play and for people who like extremely good animated cutscenes.

To add to this, I'd recommend Spring specifically.

Very similar gameplay to Age of Empires, only better in my opinion. Around the time of it's release, it was really fun to play online... though the online community is probably dead now. Still, it's worth getting and is usually dirt cheap on Steam. Don't bother with Cossacks II or American Conquest. They're not as good.

Probably the best RTS to date in terms of castle/fortress building. Very enjoyable single-player campaign. Again, don't bother with newer entries in the series.

Empire Earth I & II
Age of Empires I & II
Supreme Commander 1 & 2
Practically any Command And Conquer game except 4. Red Alert II is my favorite. Generals is also good, even if it has nothing to do with the rest of the series or its gameplay.
Oh, and how about that Total War series?

I'd also ask if anybody wanted to play Rise of Nations with me, but unfortunately I have Gold which seems to be unable connect to people that are using the standard version.
